Fairly routine.

The kicker was, when I looked at the usual screen that lets you copy/paste the graphic, it said this was my first game. Streak: 1. It should be 384.

I play on a desktop and get to Wordle by typing “Wordle” into Chrome. The URL of that last screen was

–so I don’t think I accidentally clicked on a fake site or such.

I guess there was a bit of warning in that when I first got to the NYT site there was a window giving a brief tutorial on how to play. I closed it and played as usual.

So now all my stats are gone–I never signed up at NYT. Maybe if they’d put up a warning screen ‘you must register with us by May 8 or all your stats will vanish’–well, maybe I’d at least have considered doing so.

I don’t like being strong-armed or bullied and I never cared about Wordle-bot or any of that. I just like to get in and get out, and enjoy a bit of a brain teaser.

I’m beyond irritated, but am not really ambitious to put in time trying to get the stats back. So I may just give it a rest.

(The fact that I’m the only one here who seems to have encountered this issue means, perhaps, that I did accidentally click on the wrong link–to a NYT site aimed at new players. It was at the top of Chrome’s Google results for Wordle, at any rate. Or then again, maybe I’m the one and only person who never registered with them. Meh.)

One of the pluses of Scoredle is that it doesn’t offer opinions on your choices.

Someone in another forum suggested Wordplay.com as a non-NYT Wordle clone. Wordplay just plain doesn’t shut up; it’s got something to say about every word you enter. Thanks, but no thanks.

Thanks. And here’s the inexplicable next part of the story: my stats are back, but I’m STILL at “current streak 1” despite getting the solution both yesterday and today. But my “max streak” is roughly correct, considering they booted me for some entirely unknown reason.

I went back out of curiosity to see if they’d make me a Brand New Player each and every day—and apparently that’s what they’re doing: my “current streak” will forever be “1”.

There is NOTHING in anything I’ve done that could account for this–no clearing of cookies, no playing on a different device (it’s been this desktop from the beginning), no new downloads, no visits to any sites I don’t regularly visit. No new software installed; no new peripherals added.

If they’d just put up a window saying “register if you want to start building a new streak,” then at least I’d know what was going on.

But no.

I’m starting to feel funny about NYT dotcom in general. If they’re this aggressive about Wordle, what else might they be doing? What malware might they be installing each time I visit???
