RILES → I’m glad the E came up gray, or this could have been a major trap. As it is, I spent a few minutes doping out SIR?? words, got nowhere, and then shifted to ?IS?R words, which quite quickly led me to

Scoredle has five possibles for the third guess, the other four of which I consider to be of high bogosity. It takes a par on the puzzle, so I’m quite happy with my birdie.

VISOR → Whiff. Time for a good first word second… and with L, N & T plus E & A out there, I think I’ve tried this one before, even though it’s barely a word, so
LEANT → Good move. I’d like one more vowel, U or Y, and if I borrow Scoredle’s strategy and double up the L to try to place it I can use a Y, so

Bit of a stroke of luck, there, as Scoredle shows three other non-bogus possibles after the second guess. Scoredle itself falls into a trap - the same one I hit on Friday - and goes the distance but avoids defeat.

There were a couple dozen legit possibilities after PLANT, so even if half of them had been used, it was a bit of a long shot on 2. Sometimes those longshots come through, though.

Scoredle (where I got that info from, of course) said that “The best guess to make next would be FATAL.”
