BREAD
An honest 4. As I was getting ready to post this I was going to say that I was focused on EA as the long E sound which is why I didnβt see bread, but then while typing my answers above I realized that break isnβt the long E sound either. Just happened to see break before bread.

BREAD
I suppose you could argue that a CRUMB is a BRIEF form of BREAD
A 6 today, but after 3 guesses I was able to find it definitively. After 4 guesses only 2 possibilities remained.

@The_Other_Waldo_Pepper, how was your progression of guesses a slip up?
@pjd β nice one!
Heh. Well, neither of us seeing it at first makes me feel a little less bad about it: I played LEASH after ALONE had already eliminated the βLβ β which was a waste of a letter, giving me less information than BEACH or SHEAR or whatever would have.

Your third guess determined that it did not start with D.

BREAK
BREAD
BREAD would have been a stronger third guess than BREAK (Scordle agrees), as there were more possible words with D than with K. Not a bad par though.
Quite happy with a 3 today, considering it could easily have been a 4. Or even a 5!

CREAM
BREAD
There were 5 potentials after CREAM. I found 'em all. One of them (BREAK) had already been used, so I had WREAK, FREAK, DREAD and BREAD left. Resisting the double consonant as always, I decided to try BREAD first. It just seemed the most innocuous. Happy result!
BESET β S & T gone, one and only one E, and the starting B. Good one! Iβll try to focus on the consonants nextβ¦
BLEND β Still have R to check, and there might be another vowel in there as it turns outβ¦
BREAD
Feels good to get back on the right side of par.
Again, we go down the exact same path since we start with the same word. I had the exact same progression as you and also got it in three. First third word that popped into my head was dread, but I decided to go with bread and avoid the double D
