After 1, BEAST, FEAST, and COAST had aready been used, leaving BOAST, ROAST, TOAST, YEAST. and AVAST. BRAVE had the B and R from the first two, the V from AVAST, and the E from YEAST, identifying the solution any which way.

This was fun. After countless previous answers had been eliminated I was left with b/r/toast, d/graft and yeast. Bread positively id’d among those six possibilities, so guaranteed 3 assuming I found them all.
Now I’m wondering how much I want to stick with hard mode. I enjoy the idea of hard mode, but coming up with words to positively ID among a half dozen possibilities is fun.
FUNKY → Whiff once again. First word second next
SLATE → R is still out there, which evokes another one of my “first word second” options - this time as a third word, of course
ROAST → Ha. T, C, B, Y (no, YOAST is not a word, but I do love me some froyo). Trust the B?
BOAST
My first instinct on the second guess was to go with what I ended up guessing third; but I wanted to try E instead of O. Oh, well, said the fox, I probably would have picked the wrong trap letter anyway…

YEAST (This is a real good start. TOAST, ROAST, COAST, BOAST, BLAST guarantees me at least a par, if I’m willing to sacrifice my chance for an eagle and choose a sleuth word {my first thought was BLAST}).
BRACT (Okay, so my sleuth word still left two choices. Welp, time to roll dice.)
BOAST (BOO.)
(Oh, and also YAH. BOOYAH
And even if I’d gone for the eagle, I would have gotten a birdie.
Tell me, if there had been a show called Don’t Trust the C### in Apartment 23, would you have chosen COAST?
Would have been a CINCH.
