GOING → That’s not bad. I’ll try an E and two other WoFcons in the mix, so
RESIN → E is good. And, with L & T still to go, I shuffled words around and came up with a really good one
INLET → And nada. Not many places left to put the N & I, if I invert their order from the previous, then the E, I can try a new consonant and repeat the E to try
NIECE → Really though that was going to be it! The word was a little more, uh, uncommon, shall we say…
NICHE
With its second guess, Scoredle places the second letter and tries two other spots for the first, which - by process of elimination - gets the first two letters placed with the third guess, one faster than I got it - so it finishes in four. Rather masterful play, when I look at it.

NICHE → Hmmm. ??INE looks like a nice progression, though it feels a bit trappish. Four WoFcons still out there, I can’t see a word that covers two, so I’ll settle for one
SPINE

Stroke of luck, there. Scoredle shows 54 possibles after the start word, about a third of which are non-bogus. A lot of them use the ending I settled on, so that was probably for the best. Scoredle itself finishes in three due to a slightly piggish detour that leaves it with one letter to go.

You didn’t need a sleuth word.

You had SxIxE for all 4 possibilities, with two variables: whether the N was in the 2nd (SNIDE and SNIPE) or 4th (SEINE and SPINE) spot, and what the 5th letter was (note that P is in one word in each parenthesis above).

If you go with either SNIPE or SPINE on 3, you know where the N is, and whether or not the solution has a P, and those two things tell you which word is the solution. Without giving up a shot at the 3.
