REMIT β instead of trying that sleuth word I decided to go for the birdie, but I missed
FETID β as I said, thatβs not an overly common wordβ¦

Unless theyβve changed a lot since I used to read it and see the ads, they try to attract an upscale, educated, literate audience.

SLATE
DOILY
HOLLY
3rd time this week I started with a singleton yellow-L
I use the same Clue #2 each time. After that, 5 fitting words
occurred to me; 3 of which were already used. The choice
was between Golly and Holly. But the former word is marked
Informal, minced oath or euphemistic in dictionaries. Therefore,
in accordance with my hypothesis that Editor sometimes bypasses
Wardle words, my Guess #3 was clear-cut.

The only other (iffy IMHO) possibility was a British βHULLOβ greeting. Not sure how often Iβve even seen that outside of Lord of the Rings.

WHILE
HOTLY
HOLLY
A fortunate start word essentialy narrowed the list to two (though I didnβt realize it at the time). I thought Iβd vaguely remembered HOLLY being used before; obviously I was wrong, but I prefer not repeating a placed letter anyway, so Iβm not mad at the outcome here.

HOIST - Given the used letters, there is no word starting in βHOUββ that I could see, which likely meant double consonant and ending in βyβ. So hobby, hoppy, or . . .

FETID β Whiff. Time for a good first word second.
SOLAR β Not bad. Probably another vowel there - repeat O, U or Y. If I go terminal Y, itβs probably double-L, and with F and D already used the leading letter could be
HOLLY
A stroke of luck with my carryover first guess eliminates enough trap words to give me a birdie. Scoredle has a little less luck with its second guess, eschewing a third WoFcon and having to find it later, then escaping the trap after one miss, so it takes a bogey. Which is still better than from its own start word SLATE, where it dives into the trap with its second guess but goes the distance before hitting on its final guess. I notice the trap has already claimed one victim today; I wonder what the NYT average is?
