SLATE
BROWN
LEPER
PERIL
After Slate I spent some time and thought of 32 fitting words (see discussion below).
Peril was not one of the 32 words I came up with, (and guessing there were several
others I missed) I picked Brown as a “sleuth word.” I wanted the B to distinguish
Bowel/Vowel. After that, Leper was the only fitting word left on my list.
Of course the final putt for Par was a “Gimme.”
Comments about Wardle words that don’t spoil #1602:
After #1 I compiled a list of 32 words that fit. (I knew the list was incomplete; it was
just a preliminary survey.)
But of those 32 words, 9 were not Wardle words. And among the 23 Wardle words,
no less than 18 had already been used. At some point anecdote becomes statistic:
I think NY Times removes some of the Wardle words from contention, perhaps day-by-day
when they decide a randomly-drawn word is inappropriate.
Felon was among the 5 fitting unused Wardle words I thought of – might they have rejected
it out of respect for the man convicted of 34 felonies? ![]()
Among the 9 non-Wardle words I thought of were Lured, Filed, Riled, Loved and Lowed.
Just as the Wardle list omits most 3rd-person present verb inflections, I think it omits many
past tense inflections as well.

GUISE → Good luck with the vowels. I’ll try them with three of the four remaining WoFcons
TILER → Good luck here too. It took me a while to think through the different permutations of one blank with the four known letters, but I knew what it had to be once I saw
PERIL
And I was right; that was the only nonbogus word left. Scoredle makes a tap-in par; it turns out that eliminating T beats D and N hands down. Scoredle says it had six nonbogus (and two marginal) out of 31 words total after that second guess.

PRICE
PERIL
No skill involved here.
I drew a very lucky start word from the random generator. Saw PIKER, PILER, and PINER, and decided they were all unlikely, so I went with PERIL.
I did not see PIPER, due to my blind spot for reusing placed letters, so I got lucky again.

SLATE
ARISE
Have I gloated about Slate being the perfect start?
S,l,a,t,e are not only only common letters but are in their commonest positions.
(R is common but will take care of itself.)
Only 7 words occurred to me for #2 (I wonder how many I missed), but 4 were already used
and 1 (Anise) wasn’t a Wardle word. Among the 7, I outnumbered O 4 to 1 so I went
with Arise instead of Arose.

PERIL → That’s a nice start. If I use an -ER ending and put the I where the E was, I can try
NITER → Hmmm. Maybe that should be an -IRE ending, so
SHIRE → All WoFcons accounted for. RSI?E goes nowhere, but if I use A it’ll be
RAISE → or perhaps
ARISE
Scoredle starts guessing the answer after my second guess, which means I took what could have been a birdie and made it into a bogey. Which made me feel really bad, until I saw that from my start, Scoredle gets into a trap and loses, choosing a word on its last guess that is bogus simply because it’s similar to another bogus word, and thus ignores the solution.
