Could’ve also been BOWEL or YOKEL.
After 2, I figured I had too many letters already to go with DUMPY at 3, but I still wanted to check those consonants, since I only had the L, but I wanted to try to place the vowels, and got lucky when MOPED at 3 hit green with the O and E.
Then I saw BOWEL right away, and checking through the possibilities I found VOWEL. I missed YOKEL because usually in this situation I’d have eliminated the Y with DUMPY, and I forgot that I hadn’t yet. I figured there was always a possibility that the NYT scrubbed BOWEL from the list, so I went with VOWEL.

OVENS → A hit on the O. If we move all the known letters over and add a WoFcon (I don’t think I can get two of 'em) we can try

VOWEL
VOXEL was also a possible, and I thought of it for a second, but decided it wasn’t common enough. Scoredle tries to place the V by doubling up on them for its second guess, and that does so well that it gets a birdie - most possible guesses are uncommon, the common ones are mostly past tense verbs. I’m just happy with my par after yesterday’s debacle.
