OK; I’m a fickle guy. Miss Slate has the two best vowels;
let me have a date with her now and then.
Was Among the only word possible? (Crony eliminated my Agony.)

MAGNA
AMONG
MAGNA was a good second word here, placing the A and checking for the M and G which were two frequent consonants among
the possibilities after 1.
Scoredle says Yes.

TULIP → Whiff. Upon reflection, I should have gone SNARE here, but I saw this quick and acted
SONAR → And so that’s not too bad - all WoFcons checked, E still stands out as omitted, but I might not have to check it. Anyway, I saw another word quick that shuffled the letters around, so I tried it
BACON → No help there, and I’ve checked the two most likely vowel placements. Perhaps I do have an E, as in the end of
ANODE → Nope, although I have all three letters placed now (the N by elimination). A?ON?, first thing that comes to mind (with a bogey now assured) is
AGONY → Dang it! Am I going to lose? Move G to end, A?ONG, ALONG Is gone, gotta be
AMONG
Other than that third guess, I made some progress at every stage, so why do I feel so bummed? Maybe it’s because Scoredle made a very clean par for this puzzle, and has a virtual tap-in for that par after getting only yellows up to that point?

An interesting pick from the word generator netted me a G, which was nice. Then I made a good follow-up choice, if I do say so myself.
ALONG and AGONY were still possible, so there was some luck in this birdie. I was due for a little.

SLATE
WAIST
Several words fit, but most had the forbidden S-in-5th.
Canst is archaic, Angst already-used. Waist was otherwise
all I could think of. (I will try the app RTFirefly linked to
after errands.)
Dear, dear Miss Slate: Thank you for the “Eagle”! I won’t go
playing with those teasers down in the one-vowel district anymore.
Could’ve been a 5, but fortunately got a 4.

SLANT
WAIST
I was able to come up with four possibilities: ASCOT, ASSET, KARST, and WAIST. The first two had already been solutions, and while as a caver, KARST is a familiar term to me, it’s probably less so to most people. So WAIST it was, for the 2.
