BILLY and WILLY are proper names, and I’d have ended even this limited association with the FTFNYT if they’d gone with BIGLY. So FILLY it was.

OOMPH - Ha, just a test word and it was the answer
Huh, according to the NYT wordlebot,
FILLY, BILLY, WILLY, AND DILLY
Were all legitimate answers. I would not have guessed that. (In fact, i didn’t.)

I’m not surprised they accept it as a test word, but I’m surprised they accept it as an answer.

After Crony, I thought of only 7 words, and that includes 3 already-used;
the unhyphenated spelling of Pop-up; and – although I didn’t think of it right away –
the informal Oomph. This left only Widow and Opium; the latter seemed a better
sleuth if there were another word hiding out of view.
Ans so we get another non-Wardle word.

It doesn’t surprise me that it’s a non-Wardle word. OTOH, it really doesn’t seem like a NYT sort of word!
I thought of going for the solution at 3 with HOKUM, which it turns out would have narrowed it down to just the solution at 4, but it would have been harder to see.

FILLY → Whiff, and a wasted L. The followup is a good first word second
ROAST → That was… less productive than I hoped. With S, R and F gone, it may be safe to jump into a potential trap
BOUND → And it was very safe, because that wasn’t the word. E is still out there, but I can’t see a word that uses it - so maybe a second O?
POOCH → That was it, but that was not where I expected the second O to be
OOMPH
The answer feels a bit slangy. Still, a tough one, given that my fourth guess had 32 possibles per Scoredle, with only my guess, the eventual answer, and KOPEK being valid IMO (though as a Devo fan I did notice that JOCKO was in the list). Scoredle also finished with a bogey, starting with a double-whiff (!), then trying a word that Feud fans on the dope will love, then one with the final unused vowel before tapping-in the answer.
