I’m not very good at word games, and i use an anagram tool and such, but i don’t know the list, nor do i keep track of what words have already been used.

I basically see this as a fun variant on mastermind.

I had a sneaking feeling while typing it in that we had that third guess before. If I had gone with it, a birdie was in my grasp. As it was, there were seven valid possibles, so it was a reach. Four of the seven valids at that point start with the same letter as the solution, so it’s easy to see why Scordle goes for that one. The abundance of terminal Ses in the word list is why Scoredle tries BASIS as its second guess, rather than L, N or C as the terminal consonant. Then its third guess makes no progress, and it ends up with a bogey. I think Scoredle’s solution algorithm could be improved by biasing it against terminal-S on its guesses - or perhaps it works better for Scoredle because it always uses SLATE for its first guess, so words with no S mean it won’t try any of those after that initial guess.

What is scordle? Is it a solution aid or does it vet your guesses later?

I often use the NYT “did you beat the bot”, but i think that’s something different, based on some of your comments.

The word generator came through today!

It’s more of a guess-vetter. You can try it at scoredle.com. You enter the solution and your guesses and it shows you how many words remain and what it would try for the next guess. When I say how Scoredle did on a puzzle, I mean I put in my first guess (yesterday’s solution) and then follow its “best guess to make next” chain. It’s a fun yardstick to measure by.

Also, for those of us who can’t post the pic of green/yellow/gray squares in the usual manner (which I’ve long since forgotten what that was and why I can’t use it), it produces that image for you. I go to Scoredle after I’ve solved the day’s Wordle, I give Scoredle the solution and my sequence of guesses, and it produces the pic which it then lets you copy. That’s really the main reason I go there.

But another reason is to check what sort of job I’ve done of sussing out the possible solutions. If I’ve solved it in four, for example, Scoredle will show me the possibles (from the big list of 14,855 legal guesses, not from the much smaller set of solutions) and I can compare that list to the list of possibles I came up with.
