I got the same start in #1633 and, after thinking of ten fitting words,
I decided then that Wrung would be a good “sleuth.” So I just asked it again here.
(Four of the 10 fitting words had a U, and that’s with Guard overlooked.)
The G in Wrung eliminated Guard so my only choice was to Birdie.

MANIC → Slow start. A good first word second start, though
ROAST → Middle A. Still need to try E and L, and I can cover both with
FLARE → And here I really screwed up, because I got obsessed with covering the Y and didn’t see I had already tried the I
DIARY → Starting to get worried. I noticed the U and tried it as the first letter, then second and quickly saw
QUARK

My first guess second here was 43/1556 as a second guess, and the perennial favorite SLATE was tops. Maybe I should have thought a little more at that stage. My foolish fourth guess actually managed to eliminate two valid words, leaving a tap-in, so it wasn’t as bad as I thought. Scoredle does a lot with eliminations, but after its third guess there are still six valid words left, and it takes a tap-in bogey.
