LANCE → Whiff. ROAST is out, but… ROIST or ROUST? The latter is more valid but the former covers a more common vowel, I’ll go with the former
ROIST → And good luck I did, I guess, though I’d have tried the I next either way. I’m guessing we may have an ?I__Y word here. DIPPY and PIGGY are both out there, I’ll use one of them to check the P - it would also check GIMPY as well

It’s hard to evaluate which of these words are valid and which are bogus, after my second guess, but even with a restrained definition of validity I got pretty lucky on my third and fourth guesses, after which it was 50-50 for bogey or double bogey. Scoredle finishes its puzzle by sinking the same 50-50 putt for par that I made for bogey. I think today’s a toughie.

Had trouble thinking of a fit, even trying DrYAD, a bad guess for two reasons.
(1) it’s too obscure to be chosen by NYT?, AND (2) it doesn’t even fit!!

DIZZY → Y, nonterminal. And a noninitial D. As soon as I saw this, I folded up the computer and went to bed. DRYAD would have been my usual go-to except that yellow D eliminated it, and I wasn’t thinking of anything that would work. Betcha Scoredle gets a two on this. So then I thought about Britishisms that might be valid words and resolved to try
TYRED → Which was very useful, for a while I thought about RYD?? words (and came up with bupkis) but when I thought about ?YRD? it came to me immediately
HYDRA
SYNOD, YODEL and HYDRO were the second-guess valid words I should have seen, along with the eventual answer. Finding one of them out of the 103 total possibles Scoredle shows would be difficult - about half of that total were odd-but-regular-past-tense words, including my eventual guess. Scoredle also makes a bogus second guess that leaves a birdie tap-in; there were two other possibles on my third guess, so I was a little luckier.
