HYDRA → Whiff. E, O and three WoFcons gets (probably should have gone with STOLE here, but I fixated on the N)
NOLES → One vowel, now; but I can try the other two remaining ones (and try the T this time) with
UTILE → Finally a placement! But now it looks like I need to find two more consonants. Since Wardle was a computer programmer, I figured I’d try the variant
KLUGE → Which was lucky, and made the last one easy
FLUKE

My first guess, skewed by Scoredle’s algorithm, was 8/3169; the second was 7/73, and the third 7/8, so I was proportionally getting worse each time. Still a fun puzzle, though. Scoredle also bogeys, but has to sink a 50-50 putt to secure it, so my roundabout sequence actually turned out a tad better than Scoredle’s.

of (2,3,3,4). I lucked out by not trying Slide.
