I saw vital and then natal first, but the previous answers list to the rescue eliminated both. Took a minute to see total, hiding behind the double letter.

RATIO

DINGY → Whiff. Time for a good first word second.
LEAST → Maybe I should have gone with STALE or STEAL or SLATE. Ah, well. Would like to try an O, and an R for that final WoFcon. Rearrange letters and try a word that seems a bit bogus… but Wordle is taking it…
ROTAL → Dang it. Should have gone with STEAL for my second guess. Ah, well, par it is
TOTAL
STEAL would have almost guaranteed a birdie, as I would have tried to double up to place the second letter and also tried the next vowel. By itself, Scoredle ends up with a par, same as me, as it’s second word wasn’t quite so amendable to the birdie try, though it does get the birdie from my second guess.

After my starting word turned up 3 yellows, I played around and came up with a list of possible solutions, some of which were knocked off when I checked them against my previous solutions spreadsheet.
I was most concerned with a quartet of unused words beginning with LAT: LATCH, LATER, LATEX, LATHE. LATER at 2 would distinguish among those (or eliminate them altogether) and also distinguish between PETAL, TOTAL and TUBAL. (Didn’t see OCTAL, I guess I’m not enough of a computer geek. Glad it wasn’t the solution.) Anyhow, it did the job.

YEAST (Not bad, but I want more vowels.)
QUOTA (That’ll do. Now for some WoFcons.)
TONAL (Satisfactory. Only one word left.)
TOTAL (Splendid. I “guessed” the only remaining possibility. Fuck you, Wordlebot.)

My usual play at two would be TONAL, which would have led to a birdie. For some reason today I decided to double up on the L. Wrong move, but it didn’t totally screw me.
After two, I figured TONAL, ZONAL, and NODAL were not likely solutions, leaving ROYAL, TOTAL, MORAL, and MODAL. I chose the word that, if wrong, eliminated all but one of the rest.
