INLET → Looks like a good shot at a birdie. If there’s a vowel in second, L & N could be 1st & 3rd (in some order), I’ll try the classic -ER ending with
LONER → L placed, good; ends with N, good; L??EN, try A for the vowel in second and it might be
LADEN
LUMEN was also a possible answer, and would have left me with a par. Per Scoredle, my followup was pretty mediocre - 13/23, 6th valid possible out of about 9 or 10 - but it did get me what I needed to finish. It pales next to Scoredle’s, which is the solution, so all bow to the algorithm.
