It may seem odd to have a V in my followup word in this situation, but there are a surprising number of words with V in them among words that have that yellow LA and nothing else in my starting word. Also I was looking for a word (unused, preferably) with the A and L in the 2nd and 5th slots, respectively, because among the >80 words I was able to come up with, that’s where the A and L are most often found, by a good margin. And that narrowed down the choices considerably.

There were two other valids after the third guess, but I’m pretty sure I was safe - and I was fully after that fourth guess, although I didn’t comprehend the full scope of the trap. Scoredle’s second and third guesses diverge from mine, but we end up in the exact same place before the fourth guess - and Scoredle also ends with that double-bogey “Phew”.

I kind of made a mess of this one. LATEN was not among Scordle’s top 120 guesses of 2270 possibilities. SPLAY was 64 of 119. GLOAM was 13 of 14.
Still, I made incremental progress, and by the end there was only the solution and two wildly obscure words, so a fail was not in the cards today.
