After 2, I saw CHICK and CHUCK, then CHIMP and CHUMP. Only CHUMP had been used. Had a 1/3 chance at the 3, but of course you miss those chances 2/3 of the time. This was one of them. C’est la vie.
Starting word got blanked yet again. Ninth time in past 27 days.

VOCAL → Need to try both vowels and WoFcons. I can do both with
RECTI → which has the unfortunate quality of putting the known letter right back in the same place, ugh. So now I looked for a word with both U and Y, but it couldn’t be SUCKY, since I didn’t want to make that mistake again, couldn’t find one, and resolved to try just the U on the theory that there had to be one in there but not necessarily a Y, so
SNUCK → Not much else could go in the lead there (though I’d like to try NYUCK!) other than another C and H for
CHUCK
It’s not just a proper noun anymore! Not bad finishing with a par after a frustrating start, both carryover and followup. Scoredle rates my third with a pedestrian 11/35, but it cinched the par. On its own, Scoredle’s followup tries to place the first found letter and does so very successfully, but misses the 50-50 putt for birdie.

I thought of CHUCK first at three. There was no reason to get seduced by the last remaining WoFcon; then again, there was no reason not to. CHUCK and CHUNK were equally good guesses, as the other two options, CHUMP and CHUFF, shared no other letters.
Luck could have handed me anything from a three to a five, so I guess I’ll take the four.
