PENAL → Hmmm. A shot at a two? LEAPS kinda jumps out at me here, but the “regular plurals” rule would mean trying something else if I did want to try for a two. I could make it irregular past tense with

LEPER and (possibly) KELPY and LETUP were all that were left after the carryover, so if I had been thinking more clearly, a two was definitely possible. Scoredle’s algorithm fails it though; it picks a bogus word for its followup, then the wrong valid word third, leaving it with a tap-in par for the answer.
