After my starting word, there was really only one unused possibility, PRAWN. There were also two possibilities in the Zone of Reusability (Wordles 1-199): YEARN and DRAIN (Wordles 62 and 63, respectively). I figured I’d go with PRAWN, and if it wasn’t the solution, whether the R was green or yellow would determine which recycling possibility I’d try. But it didn’t come to that.

Recycled solutions: some data
Yesterday was the 200th Wordle since recycling of previous solutions since reuse was introduced with Wordle 1689, CIGAR, which was originally Wordle 0. In the 200 Wordles from 1690 to 1889, there have been [spoilered for anyone who really doesn’t want to know any of this] 20 instances of old solutions being reused. 9 were originally Wordles in the 1-99 range, another 9 were from the 100-199 range, and only 2 were originally solutions from later than Wordle 200. (This is why I refer to Wordles 1-199 as the ‘zone of reusability.’) It’s hardly enough to make one throw away one’s used words list, for those of us who use them! In a way, they’re more useful than ever.
I’m still flummoxed by the notion that reused solutions constitute such a small fraction of solutions since recycling began. There are fewer than 500 words left from Wardle’s original list of >2300 words, and one would think that the main impetus for recycling would be to not run out of words. But recycling at this rate won’t extend the game by very much.
(In a way, I’m glad that they’re keeping recycling at such a low level, because my starting word, which I’ve used in over 1500 games, is one of those fewer than 500 remaining Wardle words, I’d like to get that ace sometime, and heavy use of recycling old solutions would reduce the likelihood of that happening soon. But I’m still surprised.)

TRACE → A good (if trappish) start. Might be another vowel, and I can’t get all three remaining WoFcons in anyway, so I’ll try an O and two of the WoFcons

Scoredle graded my guesses as 67/103, 25/41, 1/3, 2/2 so this was defintely a high-luck low-skill puzzle for me. I did, however, correctly enumerate the possible remaining answers after three, so I was safe as I thought. Scoredle’s solve is a masterpiece of eliminations; after its three guesses, despite having picked up only a single unplaced letter more than the carryover guess, it makes a tap-in par.
