Words you hate people using

I dislike ‘bro’ but ‘bra’ (in the same context) is even worse!

Anytime someone uses the word “dump” in a recipe.

Oh yeah, that’s fucking appetizing.

What. Like, “take a dump into the stew”? I’ve never seen “dump” in a recipe.

Dump cake.

Damn, that does sound pretty unappetizing.

Really? You’ve never seen the word “dump” in a recipe?

“Dump X into Y.” As in, “Dump the beans into the pot.” Yuuummmmm.

I think we use very different cookbooks.

Bart! Bart! They told us you were hung!
And they was right.

I hit a trifecta in Vegas for $1800 last year. That would probably make you feel better about the word

Oh, good god no. I hope I never see that line in an actual cookbook. It’s usually on message boards, emails, that sort of thing.

Oh, so I guess enormity is out.

I’ll nominate weiner dog then.

I’ve never seen it either.

They are too closely related in various ways for my taste.

According to the Online Etymology Dictionary they are descended
from a common Latin ancestor. (Link)

Also consider the relative infrequency of synonyms beginning with “u”
with a few exceptions such as those beginning “un”.

Finally, “use” (as a verb) and “utilize” start and end with the same
sounds (the “s” and the “z” both being pronounced “z”).

I guess you don’t spend much time in Cafe Society recipe threads, then.

I have seen the word ‘seen’ used correctly many times.

The word I hate hearing is ‘literally’ because it’s almost always used incorrectly.

I’d like to subscribe to your newsletter.

Technology, as used in commercials for cosmetics, shampoo, and vacuum cleaners. “Now with super volumizing technology.” Okay.

Space, as used by interior designers and wannabes on HGN shows. You’re talking about your living room. Call it a living room.

Entertaining, as used by the same people.

And one that’s been around for a very long time: home when referring to the physical edifice in which one lives. “You have a beautiful home.” It’s a house, dammit.

Here’s a trendy one I don’t like- saying “process” after every word ending in -ing.
The teaching process, the eating process, the cooking process- process is usually not needed and is being used just to sound fancy.

I think brevity is key in speech.

“Lovey-dovey.”

I don’t say “be a man.” I say, “Why don’t you grow some balls?” as I stride away with mine (figuritively) clanging. I know what it means, and I know why we say it.

I like catch phrases/words. I think they’re cute and I relate to them. Part of the always changing/evolving language.
