So, what’s up with working at home? I see a lot of these sites on the Internet, but all that I have seen look like scams. Are there any that are legit?
According to The Master, no (at least not at the time of the article. And even though it’s fairly old, I have no reason to believe anything’s significantly changed since then).
Most of them look quite sketchy to me as well.
I will tell you, however, that my fiance’ used to work from home doing data entry for medical claims.
It was pay by piece and there was never a guaranteed workload though.
So while it’s quite possible, I highly doubt anyone is making TENS OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS FROM THE COMFORT OF THEIR OWN LIVINGROOM!
The crap you see on the internet sites are scams, no doubt about it. However, I do have a friend that does court transcriptions from home, and makes decent money doing it. The thing about the internet sites (or ads in magazines) are they all promise you’ll be haulin’ in the big bux in no time at all. Fits right in with the age-old rule “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is”.
Those “work from home!!” ads in the paper and on web-sites are almost all the same. They want you to send money (usually 20-50 dollars) for a “complete kit with instructions”, and all you get is a photocopied document on how to get people to send you money by placing “work from home!!” ads in magazines.
There are any number of legitimate jobs where the worker can and does work from home. The problem is that most (if not all) of those sites on the internet are not the way to get those jobs. Court transcriptionists, medical records, and similar jobs are common telecommute jobs, but to get those you don’t go and pay $50 some joe who tells you where they are listed (or whatever the particular scam may be…) you go and contact local companies asking them if they have openings for that sort of work, or you contact temp agencies in your area. You may need some special qualifications to be considered, but at least when you’re taking the courses you know what you’re getting ahead of time.
