Workout Routine

So, it is time to get myself back to the gym. I use to train in a variety of martial arts depending on what was available in my location, but I am unhappy with the options around here, and without a formal plan I do not think I will get much exercise at all.

I remember back in college it was quite easy to find a simple free online site that would give you some basic options (split/full-body, how many days), then help you determine what to do on each day of the split, give you a list of the appropriate exercises for that muscle group, and then have short videos and descriptions of how to do them. All this for free.

There is a great deal more on the internet now, and a great deal more crap. My searches so far have turned up 10 day trials that still need your credit card information and motivational speakers hawking dietary supplements while offering workout advice to get you to their site.

Is there nothing like I remember still out there?

This site has some of what you want I think: http://muscleventures.com/video/2006/10/hip_flexor_stretch.html

That has some examples of how to do certain exercises, but doesn’t seem to help me put together a plan. Thanks though.

WWW.BODYBUILDING.COM has tons of free programs, videos, etc. I have used it for several years and highly recommend it.

Thanks, that looks pretty good. They have a lot of routines that people have uploaded, and you can search through them based on your criterion.

I managed to find the old site I use to use on a backup disk from my old computer. I recommend this site to anyone. Very nice, but maybe suited for beginners a bit more than experienced weight lifters. Thanks again guys.

A good workout routine would be the following, split over the week as you like:

  1. The deadlift
  2. The benchpress
  3. The squat
  4. Arse around on the weight machines for a bit
  5. Some sit-ups and chin-ups

You don’t really need to do #4 and #5.

These people will help you put together a good program.

Mens Health Forums

T-Nation T-Nation tries to sell Biotest supplements, but you can pretty much ignore it. Just read the forums and articles.

In fact, this T-Nation thread seems to have a lot of information that you may be looking for.

Are you a Beginner?

I agree with the T-Nation forums. They’ve got good advice and supplements. If you wish to buy supplements, I’d shop around a little bit first, though.

Thanks for the references. The T-nation people seem a bit over-the-top to me though.

The T-Nation folks are a bit of a different crowd, but the beginner’s thread that dgrdfd linked to is probably one of the best references you’re going to find.

Oh, yeah. A lot of those people are real bodybuilders and pretty hardcore. A lot of them are jerks, but there are still enough really helpful people there to make it more than worthwhile to read the forums. Not to mention the tons of articles. I have heard real good things about Chad Waterbury’s routines on that site.
