I’m feeling very annoyed right now. My supervisor just can’t seem to understand that I can’t do everything all at the same time. I have meetings for more than half the day tomorrow and a long list of other things that need to be done in between the meetings, and she’s just asked me to do something else that will take at least an hour, and she’s going to get very upset if I say I can’t do it. I’m working on several huge projects in addition to my regular work (one of which is extra-extra-number-one-super-top-priority, involving a lot of work that needs to be done by Monday), and she keeps dumping more stuff on me and then she gets huffy if things don’t get done right away. I want to get these big projects done so I can move on to everything else that’s behind schedule.
She needs to know every little thing I do so she can prioritize everything, but she actually refuses to set any priorities, because everything is top priority.
On the bright side, I don’t think we’ll have a staff meeting today, so I might actually get some work done this afternoon.
kaylasdad99, I’m very sorry I don’t have a Shredder Guy. The people I work with are equally annoying but not in an amusing way. I wish I did have a Shredder Guy.
I don’t have a shredder guy, I do however have a guy who is a perfectionist germaphobe who doesn’t think women should work or can do the job to his satisfaction. He’s only here about half the time and most of the time he is polite enough but I don’t work direct with him at all and sometimes…
Well they did it. They canned underperforming, bad attitude co-worker (fellow legal secretary) this afternoon. And then called me into a meeting explaining that I now get to handle Demanding Partner Attorney, along with Hardworking Associate Attorney! Even though I had told the HR person that I would not work for DP, he requested me because he likes and respects me and knows I’m good at my job. Lesson learned: try to just be barely competent. Oh wait, too late.
I did make it known to Managing Partner and HR Lady that I don’t actually have to work, thanks to my late inlaws. I agreed to give it a try, and see how it goes, and that I am going to want a lot more support from the clerks in order to get DP’s desk straightened out. We’ll see how it goes.
I’m also kind of sad for canned coworker, but really, she fired herself, they just did the paperwork.
And HR Lady did say, “all the overtime you want, it’s yours.” Um thanks, but you’re kind of missing the point, I don’t want to work OT. I don’t even want to work full time but I"m doing it for the benefits (and the money is nice too.).
I know, I know, be happy you don’t have a job you don’t hate, and all that, but I liked things the way they were, I don’t like change!
Stupid fucking boneheaded project manager, let me send you a clue by four.
It was bad enough when you repeatedly acted as a roadblock when I brought concerns to you about the major project I inherited. It was bad enough when you did not handle non-responsiveness between areas, but blamed me for not “making” the overseas programmers do their job (I’m a SME and team lead; in my world, getting work from teams is YOUR job). It was bad enough when you lied to our senior VP about the project status (and yeah, leaving shit out counts as a lie).
But, moving forward (as you like to say).
If the senior VP, the VP over the clinical team, the medical director, and the corporate project owner ***all ***say that the project’s analysis methodology is not valid, you really should go with it. People do know more than you about the software and about statistical analysis and about software design. In fact, everybody does. You’re a fucking physical therapist who got a PM certification.
It’s doubly ironic that you claim to be in an “Agile* shop” when you’re the least “agile*” person I have ever worked with.
Me to co-worker: “(manager) insinuated that we have big problems with each other and he may need to separate us. I asked where the fuck that came from, because as far as I know, we have a great relationship.”
Co-worker: “Wow, if he said something like that it would be a massive violation of confidentiality”
Are cover letters obsolete now??? I’ve started applying for jobs, and I’ve only encountered one site that allows you to upload a cover letter with your resume.
It’s kind of weird like that lately. Every position I applied for at our university required a cover letter, every position for my former employer did as well, and I’m pretty sure the ones at Liberty Mutual did too, but I can’t think of two many others that let you unless I think back to positions in public schools I applied for several years ago. It’s too bad because I know from experience that a well-written cover letter can get you an interview faster than a good resume/job history on an application.
Congrats, Locrian!
I have the opposite experience to elfkin477. I haven’t used a cover letter since 1995. Never have a shortage of employment requests.
I find that having a robust Linked In profile is much more likely to get me an interview – if someone can link themselves to you in a few people, it’s goodness by association.
I do keep a basic cover letter template around just in case I need one. If the site doesn’t require one, don’t sweat it. If they allow you to attach one, go ahead. You can also attach it to the “other documents” option, if there is one.
I dreamed about my workplace last night-- I was transferred to another department, one I know I don’t want to work in, poorly trained, and then left alone on a way too busy day unable to keep up with the customer demand or make enough product to fill the display case. A new co-worker was sent to help me out, but she didn’t know anything about the department in question, and so was useless. Meanwhile, one of the minor bigwigs in charge of our remodel paged me overhead to come up front (the far diagonal end of the store) so she could lecture me without yelling over the phone.
Second:
I am so done with hostile customers. I’m ok with some voicing of frustration over not finding product. But the degree of hostility I get from some customers-- just not appropriate.
Third:
The correct ratio of people “inside the wall” to “outside the wall” keeping things running smoothly is not “everyone but me” to “me”. Although things didn’t seem to be going too badly that way . . .
Fuck you, you insipid fucking idiot cunty “supervisors.” You do nothing, and get rid of people that actually are good at their jobs because they are a threat to your idiotic status quo. God forbid your company not totally fucking suck. I hope you all get hit by a bus, live through the ordeal, and are still alive even as crows eat the last bit of flesh from your twitching body.
One of the biggest perks working here is our ability to flex time and workspace. It’s kept people here, brought people here (since our pay is the worst in the metro area).
We received an email from The Manager. She wants to get rid of it.
Fuck.
I’m starting to think stupidity is required to be a manager. (No offense to good managers–I’m sure there’s a few of you out there, but you’re way outnumbered). It seems like many managers work hard at finding new and inventive ways to make their underlings miserable.
Well, I must admit I love the styrofoam cup full of change on my desk at work, because it will be taken to Coinstar and turned into Starbucks or Amazon money.
Today I had to work overtime because DP has a trial tomorrow, and of course the file wasn’t ready. I had a clerk working on straightening it out all day, and got all the trial prep work done, all while taking phone calls on other cases, dealing with emergencies in other cases, and all the other stuff I do.
I realized, however, that in order to impress Demanding Partner, I really don’t have to work miracles, I just have to do my job. My predecessor set the bar so low that just showing up and working all day puts me way ahead! He actually said “thank you” today as I was leaving!
My work situation is surreal. When I started at this company, they paid me $10k (about $4.5k after taxes) to move from California to Massachusetts. But if I quit within two years, I have to pay back the entire 10k.
It’s been 16 months and the job has gone downhill. Many of my coworkers have quit and many have been laid off, so I’ve inherited a mess of tedious work that I’m not good at. If it wasn’t for the obligation to pay back the 10k, I’d be gone.
Layoffs usually happen on a Monday toward the end of the fiscal quarter. I’d expected/hoped to be laid off today, but it didn’t happen. So I’ll keep my fingers crossed for next week.
That’s good to know! I’m only four applications into the job search process, so I guess I’m worrying needlessly. And I finally encountered one posting today that included the option of uploading a cover letter.
