Age discrimination is used as a proxy for fitness levels. The assumption is that referees past a certain age simply would not be able to keep up with the play.

Penalty given by VAR, perhaps harsh but if your arm is up in the air, in a very unnatural position and it deflects a shot towards goal then it is always going to risk being given against you.
