Eh, this is the weakest Mexico team in 20+ years. I’d rather play them than Denmark.
Knives out.
Both sides faking blows to the head already.
The ref is having none of it. Laughing as he goes:)
Both sides are looking strong, I wonder if Mexico can keep up their intensity.
Well, he gave the foul to Mexico on the fake against Lautaro.
Pretty chippy game. Either it gets chippier or we get some cards and this opens up a bit, I think.
1st half was pretty entertaining: 23 guys giving their all. First game this tournament (that I watched) were everybody is really going for it.
Hmm. A draw isn’t the end of the world for either team, even though, obviously, a win is much better.
If they draw Argentina will need a 2+ goal win vs Poland (or a 1-goal win and Saudi tie) which isn’t super unlikely. And Mexico would need any win against Saudi Arabia, which also isn’t super unlikely.
I wonder if the second half will be really intense or if both teams will prefer to just need the win in their final game.
When they draw, it is no longer in their own hands. Then their continued participation is depending on what happens on the other field.
It looked like 2 teams determined to win.
Mexico is determined to prevent the ball reaching Messi. So far they’ve been quite successful.
Argentina isn’t really capitalizing on the same vulnerability: Mexico also doesn’t look good when Argentina fore-checking aggressively.
If they draw it is still in both their hands, as I outlined in my post. And if pushing hard for a late goal means they’re more likely to give up a goal on the counter and get eliminated now, it’s a legit question.
Argentina are not pushing hard enough, though they are hanging on a thread. They shouldn’t count on a win against Poland, this will not be an easy win at all for them, so they should look to gain points in this game. Mexico of course speculating for that one chance on the counter attack.
They need a win against Poland even if they win today. A win today only means a 1 goal win gets them through.
I think Messi likes this better
Messi doing Messi things.
And sorry, with a Argentina win they can get through with a draw if Saudi also draws or with a small Mexico victory.
At this rate, Mexico isn’t even going to get a chance to extend its Round-of-16 bad luck streak.
If this stands, Mexico can still advance if Poland beat Argentina in the last match, but that’s obviously pretty dicey.
An open group for sure, if this Argentinian win stands.
Wow, DePaul just completely screws up a 4v2 to ice this game. Just a donkey touch.
Well, there’s the ice. Mexico just too worn down to close and a nice far post shot after the short corner.
No televised World Cup win is complete without pictures of disconsolate fans for the other team.
