World Cup 2022 - discussion, predictions, and thoughts

For sure. I’m kind of surprised USA is making it further than Germany.

I see Netherlands is 66% likely to defeat the United States on Saturday according to 538. I guess they are pretty good.

Then again, I just watched Michigan wipe the floor with Ohio State and I don’t think Michigan had much higher than a 30% chance to win it.

I’m hopeful.

So…they are really sure Japan’s goal against Germany was legit? I have to think without computer assistance, that goal would be disallowed almost certainly.

Though the English do have this mentality when reporting soccer, regretfully, other places have it with other sports. Montreal is not forgiving of its hockey teams, and it was an American who asked if anyone could play this game…

The overhead shots seem to show it was still in. No computer needed.

There’s a really good overhead shot contained in this article. Looks like a tiny bit of the ball is still over the line.

My first visit to England was after John Daly won the British Open, and I remember the headline at a newspaper stand (forgot the newspaper) titled:
“American Drunk wins the Open”

Just watched the Belgium replay. I feel absolutely horrible for Lukaku. Just a nightmare game for him.

I’ve generally been a defender of Lukaku. He gets a lot of criticism for what’s generally been a very good goal scoring rate for both club and country. But… jaaaaaysus christ those are some terrible misses.

Will Flick survive?

I don’t think he will, even if his DFB bosses want to hold on to him, which isn’t yet clear. There’s a crisis meeting scheduled for next week with Flick, sports director Olliver Bierhoff (who will have to fight for his job himself) and DFB president Bernd Neuendorf and his vice president, BVB president Horst Watzke. I think until then, the pressure from fans and the press will grow so huge that there’ll be nor alternative to fire both Flick and Bierhoff.

So who is the next candidate to take over?
Tuchel? Maybe do like they did with Beckenbauer and get Lahm or Klose.

I frankly couldn’t say, but I don’t think it’ll be anyone of your suggestions. Tuchel has the qualification and the experience, but he’s too combative, stubborn and arrogant to be Bundestrainer, who always has to be a person who most Germans can agree on. I don’t even know if Lahm has a coaching license, and Klose is too green as a coach.

It never has happened, but maybe for a change the DFB could hire a foreign coach this time.

ETA: most Germans’ dream coach of course would be Jürgen Klopp, but I doubt that’ll ever happen.

It’s the penalties, @EinsteinsHund ! The pain lives long in the memory, you are our boogie team.

I know, I know well, we often made harmless fun of England and their penalties…But that was long in the past, and we even forgave you for the Wembley goal .

Uruguay - Ghana looks like it will be a legendary game.

A dubious penalty for Ghana stopped by Uruguay’s GK. (It was almost as dubious as the one for Argentina in the match against Poland).
2 beautiful goals by la celeste.
Vamo Uruguay nomá!

And a lot of fouls, but surprisingly mostly committed by Ghana. (not surprisingly, their favorite victim is Suarez)

For drama sake I want Suarez to get sent off for DOGSO stopping a winner for Ghana. Pretty unlikely at this point though.

That nutmeg by Suarez would be considered “fighting words” in some jurisdictions.

Ghana has to make some adjustments and up their game in the second half. This is their worst performance of the cup so far.

Let’s Go Black Stars!

I hate him to my guts, the biting cheat, but I didn’t expect that Suarez still could be so on fire like today.
