World Cup 2022 - discussion, predictions, and thoughts

Good. I hope they can pull it off.

I haven’t decided yet who to root for now that Germany is out. Maybe for the USA, because I’ve hoped for a long time that football gets its big break in America. But realistically, they don’t stand a chance to win the whole thing.

If rooting for the USA is too unrealistic for your taste you could start by rooting against the Netherlands tomorrow, keeping with German tradition.

I’m glad Uruguay is out. I don’t have a lot of hard and fast loyalties or dislikes of a lot of international players, but Suarez is a dick. Cheating, biting, whining, crying, diving, dick. I’m glad he was crying at the end.

I also hope Christian Pulisic wears a cup tomorrow.

When did he cheat? are you still complaining about the handball against Ghana? if that’s cheating then any player that commits a foul is cheating, IE: all of them.

Yeah, I think Suarez should have been banned for life from football for biting. But I think that using your hands to stop a goal super late in the game, accepting the red card, getting ejected, and then hoping your keeper stops the PK is just sensible, tactical and ethical.

Yeah, I wouldn’t agree about banning him for life but I can see the point, the whining about “cheating” on the other hand is nonsensical.

Well, though the Netherlands have always been the only football team that’s more arrogant than their German rivals, and I haven’t forgotten Ronald Koeman wiping his ass with a German jersey in 1988 and Frank Rijkaard spitting on Rudi Völler’s beautiful locks twice(!) in 1990, I don’t share the regular aversion. That’s because I visited the country so often and have learned to love the country and the people a lot. Dutch people are cool folks in general. That’s why I wouldn’t mind the Netherlands winning this tournament.

Is there any provision for the referee to award a goal, rather than a penalty kick, in a situation like that? It may not be cheating, but it doesn’t really seem to be in the spirit of the game for a blatant, intentional foul to win a game.

No there is not, the same way there isn’t one for awarding a goal if the attacker is fouled when he was about to score.
Red card and penalty, them’s the rules and the rules were followed.

No, a goal is only given if the ball has completely passed the goal line. There are real life examples of shots that 100% would have passed the line, but a straying dog suddenly entered the pitch and deflected the ball. No goal.

ETA: here’s an example:

Argentinian Football at its weirdest!

Is anybody watching the Switzerland/Serbia game? The Swiss just scored a goal that was truly a thing of beauty. Swiss lead 3-2, and they advance with a win.

The Switzerland-Serbia game is quite entertaining. Everchanging leads.

Sure. Like criminals are just sensible and ethical as long as they accept their punishment if they get caught.

So every football player is a criminal then? with the possible exception of Gary Lineker all of them have fouled adversaries, got caught, accepted the punishment and moved on.

Oh, please. Offensive linemen will commit a blatant holding penalty to prevent a certain quarterback sack, knowing they will get flagged. A basketball player will commit a hard foul in an attempt to stop an opponent from making an easy basket, knowing a foul will be called. This stuff happens frequently and nobody says boo about it.

There’s no rule that says a dog can’t play soccer.

Hey, random rules question: the rule that a goalkeeper can’t pick up a ball that is passed back to them with their hands… what’s the penalty for it? And is it context dependent? If a keeper randomly just picks up a ball that was passed back, as a total brainfart without being under pressure or any reason to think there was any advantage to be gained, can they just get off with a warning?

And is there a difference between “backpass” and “ricocheted off friendly player, and the last body part it touched was a foot”?

The good thing is that handballs are impossible.
