World Cup adverts start to rival or exceed Super Bowl's

I’ve seen a couple of great commercials lately tied to the upcoming World Cup. Take a look and tell me what you think:

Nike: Write the Future

Pepsi: Impromptu Match

Both are around 2-3 minutes long, so make sure you have more than a few seconds.

Those are pretty cool, even though I have no clue who any of those people are.

Cool!

I think World Cup ads have been close to Super Bowl’s for the last number of cups…this may be the year the World Cup overtakes the NFL.

Super Bowl commercials haven’t been all that good lately. Everyone tries too hard to make a dynamite, memorable commercial full of jokes and sight gags that fall flat.

I like the Write the Future one a ton. The Pepsi one is fun.

I think I like the Nike spot from the last cup more, but both are good.

Nike has had some great ads during the World Cup going back many years. In '02, they had probably my favorite, which was a 3-minute ad directed by Terry Gilliam. I think 18 players who have deals with Nike were on 3-man teams, and they played against each other on a destroyer type of ship, and Eric Cantona (Manchester United legend) was the man in charge of this tournament. I wish youtube videos going back that far were in HD. adidas has had some good ones, too, but I’ve generally preferred the Nike ads.

Interestingly enough, this is the first World Cup I’ve not been to since '94, so I haven’t really seen the commercials for the last few. I wasn’t sitting around watching television in Germany or Japan, for example. Also not sure if these actually air or not on American television. I figure that this time around they will especially with ESPN/ABC Sports huge investment. Regardless, I’ve not previously paid much attention to the stuff during the half time break. Guess that will have to change.

Pretty much some of the biggest stars (that are sponsored by nike) in football.
In order of appearance:
Drogba (Ivory Coast)
Cannavaro (Italy)
Rooney (England)
Ribery (France)
Pato (I think) and Ronaldinho (Brazil) - both aren’t even selected by the way
Ronaldo (Portugal)
