World of Warcraft General Discussion

Just checking in, with some news. My warrior hit 80 (my ninth 80) and is now building up his pre-raid tank set (mostly “of the Auction House” gear). The health, defense, and armor look good, but the hit rating still needs some work. Still, it should be enough for anything but Ulduar. My tailor can finally start using all the ebonweave to MAKE things, which will help the mage, priest and boomkin a lot, and the death knight is now level 79.

This weekend I was in on an attempt to “three man” AQ20 (a warrior tank, my feral tank, and a decked out arcane mage). We didn’t get a full clear, but it was still fun, and then we made a run on the “mount bosses” in ZG and the Baron in Strat. No mounts dropped.

I tried tanking for a PUG too, but that was Epic Phail. There was myself (80 bear druid), a 79 boomkin, and the rest were random level 75 scrubs. It was bad. We had “face pulling”, people attacking the wrong mob, inadequate heals, inadequate DPS, all the stupid things noobs do. We couldn’t even down the “electric guy” in that one instance over in the Ulduar area.

Woo!

I am currently the #5 best geared toon overall and highest geared mage on my server.

High five!

Well this is curious. From the Shatt fishing daily reward bags, I’ve received two Gold Wedding Bands in three days.

Wonder if I can really sell them for 1182g a pop, like Auctioneer is suggesting

Nope – when autorun is on, your toon will keep running until he hits a wall.

In UI news, I’ve been banging on oUF_Lyn (it’s a layout that requires having lua-fu to modify. No options window or anything) until I think I’m going to twitch a lot, but I rather like it where it is so far, barring a few irritations that I haven’t figured out yet due to my lua-noobishness. It’s clean and simple – funny how bloated xperl looks on the priest after playing the hunter with oUF_Lyn on.

I also went ahead and rolled up an orc DK since I was curious about the class. The starting zone is epic. So much lore to gladden my little black heart. Seriously amazing stuff.

It took me a while to figure out how the hell the rune mechanic worked, even reading various articles and trying it out ingame. Still not sure I have a good handle on it. :stuck_out_tongue: I’m speccing Luonnotar as Frost, so her rotation at L58 goes something like: PS>IT>BS>BS>(the one with the axe on it). If there’s multiple mobs, I hit Plagueborne in that rotation. I haven’t tried any quests after the walk of shame though, so I don’t know how she’ll do in the ‘real world’. I’m sorta terrified of grouping since I will be That DK. sigh

Okay, but I didn’t put him on “auto-run” myself. That is something I only do when I have a long distance to go, and I just control right or left turns.

Also my level 80 friend was so quick, I wouldn’t have done that anyway.

It had to have been an anomaly of the game.

Thanks

Q

It isn’t really a problem specific to WoW, it can happen in other games too.
They way I understand it, when you push down your forward key the game doesn’t actually receive a continuous ‘the forward key is being held down’-signal. What the game gets, is a ‘the forward key has been pushed down’-signal once and it will then assume that the key is being held until it gets a ‘the forward key has been released’-signal.
Problem is that sometimes the game doesn’t get the ‘the forward key has been released’-signal when you release the key and will therefore assume that you’re still holding it and your character keeps running.
Tapping the key when this happens will resend the ‘key has been released’-signal which hopefully will be received this time.

I hope that made sense.

Yes, thanks, Mogle.

The game instructs to click on Num Lock for auto-run, and that’s what I have been doing, but, as I wrote, only on long stretches of road.

Do you think THAT could be the problem, and is there another way to do auto-run?

Thanks for your help, Mogle!

Quasi

I’m unsure if that’s the problem, but you can very easily change hotkeys for (almost?) anything to pretty much anything else. I don’t remember where the option is, though.

Once you’ve become more comfortable with the game, I (very, very, very)^99 suggest you not use the default UI and get some addons.

Ok, now I know I’m confused.
Do I think what could be the problem ?
The game has one autorun command, the one bound to Num Lock by default and it has nothing to do with what I was talking about.

It’s possible that I got a bit confused and explained your previous experience (for some reason I didn’t try to explain it when you posted it):

And what happened in the Dead Mines was something else and got nothing to do with what I said in my previous post.

Either way it’s late here and I’m going to bed, hope my brain works better tomorrow.

I don’t think it’s your brain that’s the problem, Mogle!

I reacted to the term “auto-run” because that is what was mentioned in one of the answers, but my toon actually DID start walking backward, and when I hit Num Lock, he’d stop, but I couldn’t get him close enough to loot, and when I hit Num Lock again, he’d statt all over again, and that is when he’d start the same thing again, and I hit character stuck and of course got thrown out of the instance.

Blizz just sent me a very generic answer and didn’t address the “auto-run” or whatever it was at all.

As I said, it’s me, that’s the problem, since I don’t understand a lot of the nuances of the game, but I just enjoy playing it.

Animastryfe, any suggestions as to add-ons I should load?

Thanks to both of you!

Q

Quasi, right now I think you’d probably find addons add an element of confusion, in terms of how to set them up and the information they provide; they can be really fussy and touchy to set up, and there are many that have overly complicated setup or provide just way too much information onscreen. When you get to a point where you feel totally comfortable with all the game controls and UI elements (like what all the windows do, and how to set up extra hotbars), then you might look into addons, but only if you feel like the default UI isn’t meeting your needs. For example, I have an addon called Bartender 4 that allows me to stack all my hotbars horizontally and get rid of the art to streamline the appearance, but that probably isn’t something you need yet.

It does sound like one of your controls is getting “stuck” when you’re playing, causing your character movement to also get “stuck”. You could try exiting the game and logging back in, it should clear the problem. The reason I suggest exiting, rather than just logging out to character select, is exiting will keep you in your group, and should put you right back in the same place in the instance. If you just log out, the game may remove you from your group and put you in a new version of the instance (if that does happen, just walk out of the instance, rejoin the group, and walk back in).

Thanks WotI, I will try that next time. My level 80 guy was so fast, I didn’t have time to party-chat w/him, and when we got to the end, he asked “Are you good to go?”, and that while I was trouble wit Wolkie, so I couldn’t even answer THEN (which is why I wrote him the next day, and by the way, he sent the gold I sent him back to me, and told me he understood! Also, he was in a morotcycle w/ a sidecar, and we rode to Moonbrook! It was the coolest thing! he just said “hop in”!).

You know, I am sorry to tell y’all this, but I still have not “grasped” the concept of “key binding” and am still using the mouse.

PLEASE don’t get exasperated with me, okay? It’s simple (to you guys) shit I have trouble doing these days! I get exasperated enough with myself as it is!

Quasi

This is definitely something you don’t have to feel bad about. I only very rarely keybind. Ever. I’m a mouse-clicker and an arrow-key mover. And I have an 80! So you have to feel no shame about not keybinding.

THAT makes me feel a WHOLE lot better:) jayjay! I’m doing a lot of “compensating” these days (“fakin’ it”), and I have been VERY reluctant to tell y’all that, because we talked about it early on in my gaming…:o

I’m about 600 XP away from levelling to 29, and one of the things that I did GRASP was that FORMULA y’all linked me to, so I wouldn’t waste time attacking enemies that gave me no XP points. Thanks once again, Animastryfe!

Man, when I think of all that wasted time in Moonbrook!:smack:

BTW, one of my guild and me almost made it into the DM instance, but the game just would not let us through the first portal!

We musta tried for 5 minutes! She’s gonna meet me tomorrow afternoon at 5 server time, and try again.

She’s (Vortex) also the one who ran me and another warrior through the Stocks a few days ago, and it was “poetry in motion” just watching her!

Okay. I think I oughta be rezzed by now, so back into the fray!

Thanks

Q

At 2 am it usually isn’t working at full capacity

Ok, I’m no longer confused, if that’s the way it happened in the Dead Mines it was what I thought it was in the first place, so my explanation does apply.
There isn’t anything you can do to prevent this from happening, only be aware that it can happen and know what to do if it does, ie tap the movement key for the direction your character is moving a few times and if that doesn’t work exit the game like Words on the Interweb said.

I haven’t used the basic ui since, well, never, but isn’t the target level colour coded so you can tell you if you should get xp or not?
With the colour codes being:
Skull: Run away!
Red: It will probably kill you but may not be impossible for you to kill.
Orange: Hard to kill but in no way impossible.
Yellow: About the same level as you, normal difficulty, normal xp.
Green: Below you level, easy to kill, less than normal xp.
Grey: Way below your level, trivial to kill, no xp.

It happens sometimes, the problem is that the servers can only support so many instances at the same time, so when the limit is reached it won’t let you start any new ones.

HAHAHAHA! Gimme that penguin! Gimme that fishin’ pole! And one’a them bag patterns while I’m at it. Now go kidnap yer own pups, tubby! maniacal cackling

Er, pardon me. Tuskarrmageddon achieved!

I’ve been curious to know what everyone’s favorite mounts are. I decided I couldn’t wait for the new patch and its riding changes, so I finally broke down and trained in Journeyman riding and bought a swift mistsaber. I’m exalted with Darnassus so my training and mount were discounted twenty percent. I had lots of gold since I’d been questing in areas where the mobs drop lots of netherweave cloth, which brings a good price per stack on my server, and the quest rewards have been good for my money bag as well. I’ve been eyeing all the various special mounts most other people seem to have. I rather like the talbuks offered by the Kurenai. I’m already honored with them, and you need to be exalted to be able to buy their mounts.

I’m really digging on the mechanostrider despite the silliness. I’m also kind of looking forward to getting the wolf on my orc. (Plus I want the Mekgineer Chopper, of course.)

Does anyone actually like the ram, elekk, or kodo?

I rather like the elekks myself. There’s a quest for Alliance wherein you borrow one of the elekk master’s elekks and ride it around, which I found rather fun.

You’re not dissing my belf’s Black War Kodo, now are you? And the elekk is pretty cool looking (sadly there’s no way for me to get one currently).

I don’t actually have any of the basic racial mounts on any of my toons. My lock has the buyable bear (because my wife wanted me to buy it), the brewfest rams, and the lock mounts for ground mounts; the pally has the war kodo and the pally mounts (both of them have most of the bugs, but I don’t count them).

I don’t really like any of the air mounts (though I guess I should build the pally her engineering mounts). The best one might be the Twilight Drake off of the 25man 3 drake Sarth. The flying carpet and the sperm from the skyguard aren’t bad, but only because they’re small.

I use a random macro on my lock when I mount, so I don’t know what I’ll be on. I don’t see the point of having multiple mounts and not using them.

I do find it amusing that both of my major toons are classes that have ground mounts, and have professions that make flying mounts.
