World of Warcraft General Discussion

Right. Stormwind -> Darnassus and Menethil Harbor (north of IF) -> Theramore Isle. Two points roughly in the middle of EK lead to points at the north and south of Kalimdor, so it’s not too bad. And Booty Bay leads to Ratchet, not Tanaris, which annoys me. It seems like there should be passage to and from Steamwheedle Port.

Wow. That is absolutely not what I had expected. I would have assumed higher per-skill costs for classes that have fewer skills to train so that total costs would equal out.

1.) You have to actually use the fishing skill to fish. Just standing by a body of water with a pole equipped doesn’t count.

2.) Schools of fish can be fished out, in which case they disappear, but the body of water contains infinite fish. A school is a node that spawns on the surface of the water–it looks like a translucent circle. Casting your bobber into the circle will cause you to fish up whatever is in the node (e.g., an Oily Blackmouth School will drop mostly Oily Blackmouth). There is no way to aim your bobber–you just have to keep casting until it lands where you want it to land.

3.) Primary professions (the ones you can only have two of) can be unlearned. Secondary professions (Cooking, Fishing, and First Aid) can never be unlearned, but you can just ignore them if you have them and don’t want them. They don’t take up a profession slot, so you don’t lose anything by having them.

Lockpicking as a skill is only available to the Rogue class. However, Blacksmiths can learn to make keys that will open locks, and Engineers can make charges that will blow them open. If your Blacksmithing isn’t high enough to make the key you need, you can pay someone to open the box for you. Try asking in Trade chat in a capital city. If you watch Trade, you will often see people advertising lockpicking services.

AFAIK, there are no **free **server transfers currently available, and the odds of one happening anytime soon and being for the exact servers and faction you need are so slim they’re close to nil. However, you may at any time pay $25 to transfer a character between servers (as long as the destination server isn’t locked–usually the only locked servers are ones less than three months old).

If you don’t remember moving the character, it wouldn’t hurt to double-check to make sure your toons still have all their equipment, gold, etc. There’s a small chance that you were hacked and someone else moved the char, in which case Blizzard could move it back and restore any lost items and gold.

IMO, it’s worse–Darnassus is further north than UC, and UC has a zep to STV. Fortunately, there’s a CoT portal in Dalaran, so at least we can just ride to Gadget from there and then hop a taxi if we need to go somewhere in the southern half of the continent.

To get from Darnassus to Tanaris/Ungoro/Silithis can be a tedious expedition in of itself.

It’s not as bad if you’re starting from Dalaran. There’s a portal to the Caverns of Time (Tanaris) in the Violet Citadel (to the left at the top of the stairs inside). If you’ve got enough rep with Keepers of Time (I think Revered+), there’s also an NPC who will port you from Shattrath.

You’ve then got to run to Gadgetzan, but a few minutes on a mount beats a quarter-hour on a taxi.

If you’ve got the fast ground riding skill, it’s not even a FEW minutes, really. It’s only a little bit farther from Gadgetzan than Steamwheedle Port is.

Yeah, I realized it was hyperbolic after I posted it, but the run is always a mild pain in the ass, since there’s a giant rock **right in the middle **that means I can’t just stay on autorun the whole way. It’s maybe a minute or two.

:o:o:o

I HAVE been just standing there with the damn pole.

Thanks, everyone for the answers and advice!

Gonna seek out the same territory that “shimmy” and I went there a few nights ago, and where I failed to establish a flight path.

Hit “P” to bring up your ability book, and in the General tab there should be an icon that looks like a worm on a hook, which IIRC is called “Fishing.” (Shocking, I know.) Drag that to a free spot on an action bar, and click that.

If you don’t get an error message (such as “Your cast didn’t last in fishable water” or “Target not in line of sight”), you’ll see your bobber appear on the water. There will also be a “Fishing” countdown bar. When you get something on the line, there will be a splashing sound and the bobber will dip. Right-click the bobber (you’ll get a gold action cogwheel when you mouseover it) and you should have a fish (or a piece of trash, or one of the random things you can occasionally pick up, like Stranglekelp).

Once you buy the skill from a (fishing) profession trainer, you’ll get a new icon in your skill book. It is a worm on a hook. You should transfer that icon to your hot bar.

You may have noticed that your Auto-attack button always shows the weapon (or, in this case, the item) you have equipped. Right clicking on (the pole in) the “autoattack” hotbar button will not initiate a cast/fishing actions. You must click on the fishing action icon, whether it is in your skill book, or on your hot bar, to start fishing.

Damn. I is slow.

Frickin’ hell, these people suck.

Heh. She/he started his/her own spam thread, too.

I so wish I could still play WoW e.e I miss it. Killing things was good for stress.

[mod hat on]
Just so people reading the thread aren’t thrown off, I killed a WoW gold spammer post just above Bosstone’s last post in the thread. It’s the spammers that suck, not the person who wrote the post above that!

Carry on.
[mod hat off]

I think I led them here, y’all.

I AM sorry!

(Underlining mine.)

You hear that, Bosstone? You may no longer make any further posts in this thread.

(I, of course, am joking.)

Nah, it’s not you, Quasi. They’d show up anywhere that WoW was being discussed.

I wonder how much money the gold-spam industry makes.

WoW (one of the largest MMO’s) has 11 million players, or so. If 1/10 of a percent of those players pay $40 for their services, that’s $440,000.

Is there any “real” numbers reported for that “industry”?

Right. Since the SDMB is now open to search engines like Google, the gold sellers found us when doing searches for mentions of Warcraft.

Very annoying, and I haven’t the first clue how to get rid of them. They’re like ants. Squish one and five more appear.

Ah…brings back memories! I did this on my first toon…though I think I’d gone one step further: I equipped the pole and hit the fishing button but never clicked on the bobber.

I wondered why I never got any fish…

I went fishing in Undercity… kept catching skulls… and an old boot once.
