World of Warcraft General Discussion

I don’t know what to tell you about the download problem; I didn’t have any trouble, and I’m not a Curse “premium member”.

Also, TourGuide really works best if you start out using it with a new level 1 toon. When you start using it with an “older” toon, unfortunately, it has no way to tell what quests you’ve already done. So it can end up telling you to accept quests that you’ve already finished, and you might not remember if you’ve done them, and I’m afraid that would just confuse you more. On top of that, the guides are broken up into “chunks”, so one guide leads you through levels 1 to 12, then it jumps to the next guide to get you through, say, levels 13-17. It keeps doing that as you level up. And one problem is that one guide might tell you to pick up a certain quest, or an item, but it doesn’t tell you to kill the mobs or turn it in until the next guide. So if you started with the guide that takes you from level 50 to level 55, it will probably be telling you to turn something in that you never picked up in the first place, and, well, more confusion.

Seriously, I started using it when some of my toons were in their 30s & 40s, and I was getting confused trying to figure out what was going on.

There’s at least one guy on our server who has hacked it so he can, for instance, fly over the Wintergrasp BG at any height … without a mount. You may be seeing hackers too.

Thanks, Rik!

Thanks, Nava!

From the way Mister Rik explains it, I might oughta stay with Quest Helper.

PM to you on the way!

I have this trinket (?), and from what I gather I’m supposed find “scourgestones”?

I tried reading up on this on WoW Wiki, but I’m afraid it’s so involved that it got away from me.

Could someone please synopsize this for me?

Thanks!

Q

You can just equip the trinket (the Argent Dawn Commission item) to get a buff that allows you to loot scourgestones from undead monsters you kill in Western and Eastern Plaguelands. If you don’t have the trinket equipped, you won’t ever see scourgestones. Scourgestones are essentially tokens which you can turn in to Argent Dawn members for reputation with that faction. The faction is largely obsolete outside of achievements, so you could easily skip it if you wish.

Hmmm one would have thought it was better to wait until after the duel before suggesting such.

Patch 3.2.2 has reduced expert riding to 225G! I have stopped questing in Outland and I am now mining in EPL though it was a popular location last night so only picked up a few nodes. Hopefully I’ll get a good run tonight and I’ll own my first ever flying mount by the end of the week.

I never used to like my mining only nights but I put some music on and actually got into it, the album ‘South of Heaven’ by Slayer is perfect for the Plaguelands.

Gotcha WotI!

Wolkie’s trinketed up already, so maybe I should just leave it off for now?

Thanks

Oi, more annoying questions. My current char has Skinning and Herbalism, which has fed pretty well on gold. I’m banking 3.5k at 75, so I can’t complain. However, I’ve been thinking of dropping Herbalism and going for Mining. This is kind unfortunate, since I like gathering herbs, but the secondary bonus is no longer very good. As a Hunter, I don’t get hurt much. But when I do, the piddling 3200HoT won’t cut it. I’m already breaking 11000-12000, even concentrating mroe on DPS stats.

Secondly, I’ve noticed disturbingly that sometimes Cower seems to re-set itself and go on autofire on my pet. This is not helpful, since I removed Cower from the hotbar in favor of managing Thunderstomp, etc. Then my pet is draining bloody good Focus in order to drop the threat it paid growl to build. Not good.

So, what should I do I probably will switch to a new main in Cataclysm, so I’m thinking about taking Mining. Toughness is nice, after all, and I can then fed mats. The markets for ores also seem to be much hotter than the markets for herbs, too.

I have the Superior achievement now, having spent some of my hard-earned emblems on the lovely Broach of the Wailing Night for my last piece. I am now fully outfitted in blues and purples. I have been wandering around the low-level areas finishing quests. I was in a bit of a hurry to get to human lands, so there’s still a lot in the night elf areas I hadn’t done. I got up to Exalted with Ironforge that way, with the Harvest Festival quest as a further help. I’m now on my last faction for Ambassador–Gnomeregan Exiles. I’m at about 15000/21000 with them, and am continuing the low-level quests for the spillover with them. Rep-grinding via the Argent Tournament, while it would be more efficient, is not happening on account of my jousting problem. I’m doing slightly better at it since I run TOC so much, but all that means in practice is that the Valiant takes longer to dispatch me.

I’ve also been disposing of NPC-killers. I was in Ashenvale and got the alert that Astranaar was under attack. I moseyed on over and saw a level 38 undead warlock attacking guards. First rule of successful griefing–be able to kill the guards. The warlock was struggling, but the guards weren’t taking him down all that quickly, so I shot him and went on my way. I came back a little while later, and he was at it again. So I shot him again. A blood elf hunter I came upon later was minding his own business so I let him be.

Pet abilities can still be set on autofire even if they’re not on the bar.

I use this macro for my Hunter, and it works very well:

/cast Hunter’s Mark
/petattack
/petautocaston [group] Cower; [nogroup] Growl
/petautocastoff [nogroup] Cower; [group] Growl

This ensures that whenever you’re soloing, your pet is Growling and thus generating threat, and whenever you’re grouped (assuming someone else is tanking), Cower is automatically on. Even if Cower somehow gets turned on, every time you open a fight it gets reset, so it’s foolproof. If you don’t like casting Hunter’s Mark and having the pet attack at the same time, you can take out one or the other, but I found this to be a good catchall opening macro.

The only trick is when you’re in a group and your pet is doing the tanking; for that, I wrote a similar macro that just reverses the Cowers and Growls and named it Tank, and I swap out the macros when I need to.

As for Mining vs Herbalism, I find Mining pays quite well, and the Stamina helps your pet. If Lifeblood could target others than yourself, it would be a good boost on top of Mend Pet, but it’s really not useful for Hunters.

Thanks a lot for that! I can’t figure out the macro syntax enough to build my own, so I’ll steal yours (Mwah ha ha! Internet theft!). Probably because they don’t seem to have officially documented it anywhere, for some ungodly reason.

I did forget to ask if anyone had any fun mixing Druids with Engineering. The combo just seems hilarious to me. It didn’t seem as though it would add much in terms of capabilities.

Still, can’t you imagine a worgen Druid driving around in his Chopper, leather jacket reading “Fel’s Angels” on the back.

Most of my knowledge of WoW macros comes from stealing examples on websites too. :stuck_out_tongue:

Over the weekend, I got my violet proto-drake after completing the Brewfest achievements. It’s been a long, strange trip, indeed.

I also reached exalted with Thorium Brotherhood, bringing me up to 36 exalted factions. Currently working on Thrallmar; I’m about 1/3 of the way through revered now. I’ve got a rhythm going in Shattered Halls where I do all the trash up until the first 6-pull, then reset and the instance and start over. That nets me about 1400+ rep per hour, which, while not great, is better than, say, Ravenholdt was. And Ravenholdt wasn’t too much of a chore, I felt.

I’ve also done some Keepers of Time rep farming by razing Old Hillsbrad; it’s easy enough, but the rate of rep gain is slower there just because the mobs are so spread out.

I’m going to get some help from a friend with Sha’tari rep; I can solo the trash in Mechanar, but it’s very slow going. Since I know that I can blow through Magister’s Terrace with one of my friends, I would guess that any of the Tempest Keep instances could likewise be chewed through quickly as a duo.

So what do you do when you like the guild you’re in but don’t like the way it’s being run?

a magical pen appears from thin air, and a tome spews forth

When I first joined this guild we had a strict one main, one alt in the guild policy. It was a good policy because there was a manageable number of alts looking for instance runs, low end raids etc. But fairly recently, this rule was recinded and now we have dozens of alts, with some people having a full roster of alts in the guild. So now it’s much harder to get guild instance runs because spots are snapped up quickly and we don’t really have enough tanks to do as many instance runs people want. It’s especially irritating when I’m trying to get my ONE alt geared and someone else who’s 3rd alt just hit 80 also wants to run. So I feel like other folks are taking advantage of the rule and not being nearly considerate enough of what other folks want. So more often than not, I play the nice guy and let other people run, because a) I don’t want to make waves and b) it will just cause drama if I bitch about it.

The other thing that’s bothering me is that we don’t impose any sort of penalty on people who change their main (raiding) character. Someone who changes the class they play for raiding gets to keep their rank and all of their DKP. So it’s quite possible, even likely that someone can switch classes to the same class as another long time raider and get gear priority over that long time raider. It isn’t equitable at all.

I could make a post on the guild forums, but it won’t get read and the people that read it will just say “oh, so-and-so is complaining again”.

magical pen disappears

That’s correct. This is one of the bugged spots–you fly in a specific path and it won’t dismount you.

Yup, you’d have to wipe your current talents and re-spec.

If you aren’t sure what you need to kill, try to mouseover the quest objective on your minimap or map. There will usually be a note that says “Kill X for Y.” Then, you go look in the area for whatever X is, and you kill it until it drops item Y. (Or multiple items Ys.) With QuestHelper, you can also mouseover a mob and it will tell you if you need to kill it for a quest. If all the tooltip gives you is the mob name, you can leave it alone.

Right-click username → Ignore. It works wonders.

No, that’s completely different. This is just exploiting a bug that allows them to hover. It’s completely different from the actual location hacking that’s going on that allows gold farmers to make corpse ads or do tons of node farming.

Ask your GM or an officer you get along with if you can talk to them, preferably on Vent if you have one. Lay out your objections ahead of time so you know what you want to say. Make sure that you’re commenting, not accusing, and that you talk about how you see this as affecting the guild as a whole rather than just you. You might want to prepare some suggestions for how to make things run more smoothly–e.g., giving each person one “priority” alt who gets first dibs at runs. IMO, the main-swapping especially is a **huge **problem–there needs to be a penalty for people gearing one toon, then dropping it and picking up another. (Although that is somewhat less of a problem with a DKP system versus a loot council.) If they blow you off… hate to say it, but it might be time to look for a new guild.

I can’t tell you how much I’m loving my violet proto-drake. It’s replaced my flying carpet as my favorite flying mount.

And congrats on all those exalted reputations! I can’t imagine doing that. I’ve got several of the Northrend factions to exalted, but I’m not even exalted with the other Horde races yet let alone all those BC and Old World factions.

Just fyi, this is now part of the base game. Verrah handy it is, too, for lazybones like me who never install any add-ons.

So what’s up with this “Harvest Festival”? My calendar says it started yesterday (Sunday) and runs through Saturday, but I didn’t see any sign of a “Harvest Festival” anywhere in the game. And I noticed it’s not listed among the other holidays in the Achievements window.

As far as I can tell there is one quest (Honor a Hero… or something like that) and the same guy sells some fireworks. That’s it.
