So another tanking first, this time heroic HoL; generally a good result, with the melee dps (druid) dying a couple times, but what do you expect from HoL, and one wipe on trash when two of the dwarves near the end hit whirlwind at the same time. (Fortunately the priest was soulstoned). I also did a terrible job on crowd control on the second boss (the one who shatters his golems) but fortunately my pug group was awesome and took care of themselves.
I did do a nice job of crisis management in the hall of statues area when someone got feared into triggering the last group of statues when we were still on the next-to-last. Army of the Dead for the win.
I have to get better at (1) not standing in bad stuff and (2) using my interrupts and other defensive powers.
Ahahahaha guild drama last night. Apparently the guy who transferred in with the Alg25 key gave some sort of stupid ultimatum, so leadership said “thanks but no thanks” and gave him and his friends the boot. This was shortly followed by our recruitment officer and his brother leaving. It’ll be interesting to see how things shake out…
Woohoo indeed!
Nicely done! Heigan is one of the few bosses in 80 raid content (maybe the only) who not only doesn’t have a hard enrage, but not even a soft enrage (e.g., doing more damage as the fight progresses), so you can literally kill him with only two people left alive, if those two people are a tank and a healer. I’m sure you’ll get him next time–the dance is just one big gimmick. It’s a pain to learn, but once you’ve got it down, the fight is cake.
Question: Have you tried the platform strategy for phase 1? You put all your ranged/healers at the closer-to-the-entrance corner of the platform that’s against the wall, and then you have your tank and melee DPS kitty-corner, at the corner that’s farther from the entrance and up against the floor of the room. If you have Heigan himself on the floor and all of your raiders riiiight up against their respective corners, the distance is just far enough that the casters don’t get hit with his AOE, and nobody has to dance for ph1. Caveat: while I’ve done this *relatively *recently, it’s probably been at least a month, so it’s possible that his AOE range is larger now and it no longer works.
A quick Google for **measuring absorbed damage wow **turned up this page. Skimming through the cached version of it, the consensus seems to be that WoL does a very good job of crediting absorbs correctly.
Best of luck. I hate troubleshooting stupid shit like that–it could be anything.
:smack: Best combo ever.
That’s got to be very frustrating. Just remember: it’s a game, and it’s your $15 a month. If you’re not having fun, it’s not worth it.
Incorrect. The QH message when you log in is specifically about submitting information to improve the accuracy of its database.
Heyyyy, awesome! I didn’t even know you could get those in the old world now. (I thought they were Outland-exclusive.)
They’ve tracked the Tastyfish schools ever since I’ve had the ability. They also track school-like things that aren’t schools (e.g. Floating Wreckage). Any node you can fish out of will show up.
Well done! I hate that area. Hate, hate, hate. And I even have an every-30-seconds fear break.
Those are probably some of the hardest things about tanking. There’s so much to pay attention to that it’s very easy to get dialed in and miss that there’s a void zone under your feet. Similarly, when you have so many tricks in your bag for saving your own ass or pulling someone else’s out of the fire, it’s easy to forget about one that would be best in some niche situation. (Especially if it’s something that a lot of bosses are immune to, e.g., for a Prot War, Spell Reflect.)
We’re all button pushers, whether we use addons or not.
People who don’t use healing mods spend more of their time figuring out who needs healed and what heal to cast than they do actually doing the healing. OTOH, using a mod like grid or healbot allows the healer to more quickly determine who needs heals or cleansed and to get the job done.
I’m not saying addons are strictly required to heal, but they do allow the player to focus more on the fight instead of the buttons they have to press.
I certainly hope you’re at least using keybinds and not actually clicking on the icon for each spell.
Okay, then. I pay exactly zero attention to anything that came up in my chatbox when my toon was loading, so I never actually saw the message personally. Hell, I pay zero attention to anything that comes up in my chatbox just in general, most of the time…well, except for skill-ups when I’m actually deliberately working on them.
Well, I use keybinds for the healing spells when healing… still trying to figure out add-on compatibility. But then, at this point I’m only healing 5-man Heroics so I’ve been able to deal with everything as is. If I ever move up to raid healing I will need re-evaluate.
(For raids I DPS - it’s my preferred spec, but having the healing off-spec makes it much easier to group for badge farming)
I admit that I probably don’t give mods, in general, enough credit. I think it probably stems from my core FPS perspective where skill > All, because everyone has essentially the same gear and that no matter how many mods/shortcuts/interfaces you add to the game, it’s not going to stop an unskilled player from eating a rocket if they don’t strafe. I’ve seen several times where there were unnecessary deaths/wipes and got a “Sorry, my Healbot/Grid/etc wasn’t setup right” :smack: . I say learn to trust your own instincts and skill.
I can see now where it can greatly help some classes, as a paladin healer I have only a few healing spells that I would use. I do have them keybound within easy reach as well. I also have other spells that I still do have to click on to cast.
Like I mentioned earlier, I’m not in a progression guild or trying to get any firsts, so my setup works for me. I’m sure I would change my tune if I ever got the itch to join a hardcore group. I look for ways to keep the game interesting and to keep me engaged. When I got bored questing or when heroics became more of a task I mixed it up and challenge myself.
-What if I tried to grab all 15 of xxx mobs at the same time instead of one at a time? (like the argent tournament quest)
-What if I tried to solo that group quest to kill the elite?
-What if I tried dpsing while healing a heroic?
Yes I know I have some issues and everyone can play the game they way they like. I guess everyone can make their own decisions. If your raid group requires you to run DBM/vent/Grid/etc in order to run with them, then either download them, don’t raid with them, or find another group. Similar with guilds that have apps. Fill it out and submit it, or continue on without them. When I raided on my last server, I was guildless. I advertised my services on general/trade and always found a group no problem (healers were in high demand). After the run I almost always received a request to fill out an app. I told them I don’t do apps and usually they said I could join without one anyway. Sorry if I rambled, I typed this at work over a period of time while I had a minute here any there.
I always kick myself after a fight if I forget to use a cooldown or could have used a stun to stop that last Shadowbolt, etc. It happens, just learn and move on.
I can’t help but wonder the same thing. I’m sure they see the addons and try to duplicate the best functions.
Step 1: Encourage player-created addons
Step 2: Duplicate mod functions and call it a new “feature”
Step 3: ??Profit??
Well, it’s really no different from “My macros weren’t set up right” or “My keybinds weren’t set up right.” It’s still the player’s fault for not making sure their chosen interface for healing is set up properly before the run, and I say that as someone who caused a couple of wipes due to the same thing. The ‘purest’ you can get is putting your healing spells into the action bar slots bound to the 1-0 keys and only using those, or actually clicking on the icons, and I’m sure you can see how that increases reaction time.
Yeah, pretty much. I can’t figure out whether or not to disapprove of the practice. For instance, in 3.3 they’re launching a quest tracking system that will quite likely obviate the need for Quest Helper, which has been one of the most popular addons ever.
[ul][li]Pro: Certain addons like Quest Helper have become thought of as essential for smooth gameplay. By incorporating their functionality into the core game, Blizzard makes it easier for newbie players to have an enjoyable experience.[/li][li]Con: The addon creator, so far as I know, doesn’t receive credit for his or her work and loses popularity since fewer people use the addon.[/li][li]Pro (sorta): Since Blizzard made it clear they don’t want addon creators getting paid for their work, it’s not like they’re stealing money from players.[/li][li]Con: They’re still stealing ideas. Even if it’s not implemented by the Blizzard team in the same way the addon creator did, it’s obvious they wouldn’t have added the feature unless the addon was so popular.[/li][li]Pro: Blizzard’s implementation usually doesn’t have 100% of the functionality the addon does. If you happen to need that functionality, you’ll still want to go with the addon.[/ul][/li]
Right now I tentatively lean toward it being a good thing that Blizzard puts this stuff in the core game, but it still leaves a bit of a sour feeling.
Makes sense to me. I only have a problem with people who don’t like addons etc. but still want to raid with guilds who require such things.
Seemed pretty coherent to me. But no worries–there are a number of us who post here from work, myself included, so we’re used to things getting a little bit splintered by that darn “job” stuff.
No, the **purest **thing you can do is just keep your spellbook open and click each icon in situ. Or maybe actually type out **/cast Spellname **every time. I’m not decided yet.
IMO, they should just credit the original developers with in-game items. They have a history of naming NPCs and items after prominent members of the WoW fan community, so it’s not like there isn’t a precedent.
When I think about, the default ui has improved a lot since WoW first came out. Did you know, that originally, there were no built in raid frames, they weren’t added until patch 1.6. That’s right, even if you were in a 40 man raid you could only see and target the five people in your party, ctraid was more or less mandatory back then.
I thought that was still the case? I know before I got Grid, I only ever saw the 5 people in my group when I went into Alterac Valley. Maybe I just didn’t have the option turned on, or the battlegrounds work differently than actual raids.
I’m not sure when they changed it, or even if it was always this way. I just grab the group and drag it from my raid tab and onto my screen so I can see everyone. Also I would grab individuals (like Tanks) and put them smack dab in the middle where i can keep an eye on them. I didn’t like using the right-click and then add-focus because it was always so big.
The first one I ever got came out of a Sagefish school near Tarren Mill. I’ve found the manual on several toons, only one of which was found in Outland.
Gratz all round it has been a while since my last post due to a real life achievement, First Born Son! As such my wow has been sporadic to say the least so I am taking the opportunity to level BS (323 now), cooking and fishing. Perfect for very tired people little thought required.
Hey folks! I haven’t posted in this thread before, so I’ll introduce myself.
I’m an altaholic. I’ve got 5 toons at 80: Hunter, Shammy, Warrior, Rogueand DK. They were all DPS until I noticed that all I was good for was hittin’ stuff so I went resto with the shammy and I’m (reluctantly) building up a tank set for the DK.
I’m in a guild on Draenor called Reprisal, and we’re pretty darn good, but we’re not the absolute best on the server. We’re happy to welcome folks in if they’re social players, but the progression raiders are pretty picky about who they take with them. Seems fair enough to me.
I ran Ony and ToC10 last night for the first time (with my hunter), and it was really fun. We ripped it up without any real problems, and I got a gun and a helm from Ony and some new bracers from the ToC10.
