World of Warcraft General Discussion

Thanks for the tips, SFG and FH!

I really, really would love to see Blizzard honor Dusk with an item sometime. How can you not love an orc hunter named Tednugent with Exciting Undergarments on his head and his faithful feline companion Scratchfever?

I mentioned Bartender above, so I thought I’d give you a screen shot or two to show what it does. My new BDL DK doesn’t really have many skills, and so theUI is pretty open.

My hunter has the most things that need buttons, I think, so he’s a lot more cluttered.

The HUD is ICEhud, and I’ve decided that I can’t live without a HUD. It would also let me get rid of the player and target frames in the top left, but I feel weird without them.

If anyone has suggestions on how to decongest the hunter’s UI, I’m totally open to that. His main skills are in that center box because that mirrors the game pad that I use, and it’s really more of a cool-down reference than anything else.

Same. I loves me my IceHUD.

Yeah, I still need a lot of gear for my healing set. I’m getting comfortable healing heroics with decently geared tanks, but the majority of my Resto gear is still quest greens. I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t be able to heal H TOC, for example, and I don’t know how well I can handle healing with a random tank in other heroics.

It doesn’t help that I’m still only Honored with most of the Northrend factions, so the good Revered gear is at best a few days away and the Exalted stuff is even further.

I kinda switch back and forth between that and DHud depending on which is better right then. They’ve each had updates that made me love them. I don’t seem to be able to get rid of IceHUD when I’m at full health and not in combat though. I guess I’m missing the option somewhere…

Oh, damn, you said the exact thing to make me procrastinate on job hunting even more. :stuck_out_tongue: I had this issue too and managed to work it out.

Open the IceHUD configuration window and go to Transparency Settings. Each slider represents a different combat condition, and 0 to 1 is the amount of opacity, with 0 being invisible and 1 being completely opaque. I personally have the bar alpha set to 0.85 in combat, 0 out of combat, 0.4 OOC and targeted, 0.4 OOC and not full, with 0 for all the background alphas.

The trick, however, is that by default IceHUD locks each bar at 100% alpha. Click the little + button on Module settings and find, for example, PlayerHealth. Under Visibility Settings it’ll have an option that says “Always show at 100% alpha”. Make sure that’s unchecked. Do the same for the other bars you have displayed, and after that they’ll obey the various transparency settings.

I have a tech question, if anyone knows anything about that. When I do get my new computer, assuming that my old hard drive is still intact, does WoW need to be hooked into the registry, or would I just be able to copy the World of Warcraft folder over to the new hard drive through an external enclosure?

Because if I can just copy, that’s going to save a LOT of time downloading and patching up…

You should be able to just copy. I don’t think WoW hooks into the registry at all.

Love me some IceHUD. Never leave home without it.

AFAIK, you can just wholesale copy everything.

Wonderful! Man, I am going to make sure this new PC can handle what it needs to handle. No more 6 fpm in Dalaran, dammit!

I’m streamlining my expenses and quitting smoking after this carton’s gone. I’m-a gonna save like I’ve never saved before…

The nice thing about being upfront about being a newbie is people are willing to cut you a lot more slack. Ever since I started running heroics people have made it a point to compliment me on my healing. I just ran H TOC (today’s daily) as the healer, and aside from one wipe and one extra death we did great. No loot this time, sadly. :frowning:

Nice, I love it when ToC is the daily, it’s like killing two birds with one stone. I’m determined to get into an Ony or ToC10 raid tonight. :determined:

Emphasis added. Intentional hyperbole or amusingly appropriate typo?

Good luck quitting smoking. Hope you actually want to stop and aren’t just quitting for the money. (IME, the former is a lot easier. I couldn’t quit until I actually didn’t enjoy smoking anymore.)

Absolutely yes. If nothing else, it lets them know to be a little bit more on their toes and ready to take care of themselves.

You can do it! Gogogogogogo!

Oh hell. You had to mention UI. As I’m at work, I can’t show you my current UI but I’ll screencap it when I get home. It looks like you do a bunch of pvp? A site I highly recommend for UI recs is Vranx.com. It collects a bunch of the best addons for various categories and gives you a screenshot/blurb.

Let’s see. What I use:

ouF_Lyn (modified to further reduce visual clutter)
**TipTac **(for info that I removed from ouF_Lyn, such as HP at full since I only really need to glance at that once)
**Bartender4 **(many of my bars are mouseover hidden)
**FloTotemBar/FloAspectBar **for my aspects and traps. I’ve configured them to only show a few aspects as Viper/Dragonhawk are macro’d and Monkey is included in my very small “Crap, melee!” bar.
**SexyMap **
**MSBT **
**Recount **(hidden in combat)
**Omen **(hidden ooc)
**Prat **
**Fane **(to modify the Prat tab look/feel)
**SharedMedia **(hacked to include the ouF_Lyn font across my UI)
**OmniCC **(to add timers to the CDs)
**SexyCooldown **(a linear CD addon that I’m also experimenting with for showing buffs/debuffs/cds on discrete bars since mine often get lost in the billionty that get thrown up in raids)

I’ve used macros to awesome effect to reduce the number of things on my bars, plus Bartender’s state conditions are very nice – visible on mouseover only, hidden, visible in/out of combat. Modifiers also let me choose whether I want to do one thing or another with one button, but I’m not sure if that’d work well with a gaming pad.

Well you’ll probably feel a greater sense of accomplishment when you do it all on your own.

Every raid wipe costs about 150-200 gold, we usually wipe once or twice if we are doing farm content but when we are doing progression content we might wipe 20 times on a single encounter while we try out different strategies. We are not picking up nearly enough in mats and BOE items to cover those sort of repair bills.

For us, a wipe on 25-man probably costs about 250 gold. This week, we finished (after good progress but no kill on Anub) with something like 13 attempts remaining. That’s 9,250 gold. (Ouch. Even when you factor in that it’s probably somewhat less than that, given the occasional DI etc.) Given that ToC patterns and high-level BoE drops go for thousands of gold, this isn’t a number completely outside the realm of possibility.

Note, too, it’s not just what we pick up in raids. People also donate mats (probably money, too). I know I’ve thrown in food, flasks, and potions.

Yes, I can verify that you can just copy–I did it when I installed Windows 7. Just make sure that when you make your shortcut, you’re starting WoW from the Launcher (launcher.exe) and not wow.exe. Otherwise, you won’t get the patches and incremental updates you need and eventually you’ll run into problems.

Neither. I was serious. It’s 6 fpm give or take. It can take me almost a minute to get from the inn beside the Silver Whateveritis to the Silver Whateveritis to hit the portals. I’ll skip so many frames that I can’t actually hold the arrow buttons to move…I have to tap because it takes so long to show what’s going on that I end up already in the shops across the street before I even actually see that I’m out the door of the inn. I’ve got 1G RAM installed in the old computer (an upgrade…when I first started playing, I had 512M and Ironforge was almost as bad as Dalaran is now).

I fully intend to have at least 2G in the new computer, preferably 4.

At the moment, it’s a little of both. I’m not enjoying it as much, but that may be because I’m recovering from the flu. I really do hate to spend the money on it, though. So we’ll see if it’s a permanent quit or a temporary one.

Forgive me if I go :dubious: at that. **One **frame every **ten seconds **seems pretty close to impossible, in a game where even incredibly outdated systems tend to hit a basement of about two or three frames per second. Especially considering that the actual way the game measures it is in FPS. I don’t even know what a 6 FPM would look like on that… 0.167 FPS?
