World of Warcraft General Discussion

Yeah, I have credit tagged as that day for things like catching Mr. Pinchy and that rare fish in Org just because I still had them from making the catch some time before then.

I tried ICC 10 man last night with a mix of our weekly ToC pug group. We didn’t manage to down him, I think a lot of people seemed distracted and not focusing on the fight. As a tank, i could see the raid group standing behind the boss and I noticed that people would not get out of the fire, and took a long time to free the impaled person. We managed to get him to 80% at once, but it all falls apart when he starts doing the whirlwind and throwing out fires.

Any tips? Things that I noticed:
-He “spits” a fire ball at someone, when this lands it also travels across the ground in the direction he shoots it.
-He Impales someones and they’re not able to perform any actions and does a ton of damage over a short period of time.
-During the whirlwind he drops out fire in an X shape, the fire continues outward following that X pattern and begins dissipate starting from the inside of the X and goes outward following the same path.

This patch messed up my camera - I like to set the camera position above and behind me, but now when I move the camera adjusts back to the default angle, not has high (so I can’t see as much). I need to see how to fix that. It was really annoying last night when I was trying to tank.

I had that happen too! I thought it was just me.

Check the camera options in Interface. Sometimes major patches reset your game-controlled options to their defaults.

Specifically, change it to ‘horizontal only’. That will swing the camera around behind you when you move, but it won’t change the height of the camera. I had this same issue. It also mucked up some other options. Annoying.

For those of you who had your Objectives Tracking frame mysteriously reset itself to a wonky position post 3.3, the old Blizzard menu functionality that let you mouse over the frame to unlock and move it has Gone Away ™. On my screen it wound up being just right of top center. (GAA!)It’s not just an issue for addon whores like me, it’s also an issue for people who use the default UI since the quest frames are apparently now half-hidden by the default right hand bars according to what I’m seeing on the forums. :dubious:

After simmering about it for a bit, I smacked my head and checked my beauteous minimap addon SexyMap, which handles your minimap and all the frames theoretically attached to it (objectives, paperdoll, and vehicle). It’s got an option for showing the movers for said frames, which worked perfectly, thank goodness. Not sure why Blizzard took out perfectly working functionality, though.

Regarding the new LFG system on a lowbie: in the 40s bracket, you’re going to wind up being sent to Maraudon multiple times. Three times in a row for my baby hpriest, in fact. The teleport will drop you down in inner Maraudon, right at the waterfall, so no need to fight through the outer part. This means you miss the bosses on the outside, but given how long Mara is, I’m not sure that’s a bad thing.

That said, if you die in Maraudon, for Elune’s sake don’t release. Or if you do and stumble your way back inside after what has to be the longest run-in, you’re going to be alive at the very outside of the dungeon again. In that case, back out and then hit Teleport to Dungeon again. Presto, you’re back at the waterfall.

I really excited about using this on my level 20 lock, who hasn’t been able to get a group for any instances yet. I suspect I’ll be spending some time in SFK this weekend.

Also should make RFC doable for mid-teen lowbies. Which is nice.

On the plus side, I see they fixed a problem I was complaining about in BDL guild chat a few days ago - they moved the item count indicators (the x/5, x/10 bits to show how many items/how many kills you have toward a quest) to the front of the descriptive text. When it was at the end, it was getting cut off if the line was too long, and so all you could do was keep killing/collecting until the text went from gray to white. Now you can actually see your progress.

I submitted a bug report last night regarding some really wonky post-patch texture rendering in Searing Gorge:

There were a bunch of spots like that all around The Cauldron. I figured it was related to the patch, because I didn’t see any of that when I was there the day before the patch.

Okay, I just started playing–long story; I swore I’d never play, I’d waved off friends who tried to get me to play, and then one of my friends started playing while at home recovering from a busted leg. My desire to not be addicted warred with my desire to hang out with and distract my friend, and. . .yeah.

So far, it’s been pretty fun; I came from SL, where I played a game that was exclusively PvP as far as the combat was concerned. It’s downright refreshing to do PvE; I can kill things, and they don’t bitch! And there’s no drama, 'cause, except for the one friend, I’m soloing. Though I might go PvP at some point. . .if I do, would it be acceptable to look at the SDMB Horde group (I really, really wanna play a Blood Elf at some point, but my friend’s playing Alliance)?

So, I’ve played before and after the new patch, and I have a question: My first character was a human warlock, and it seemed like it took a long time to get her up to 10, which is where I was. Not a horribly long time, but I felt like it was work. Two or three days with two or three hours at a go, maybe longer. Then I made a Draenei priest. She got to level 12 in, like, two or three hours. Is it a difference in the builds, or is it because I leveled up with a party (the friend made a new character to go with my warlock, but wanted company pumping it up to 10, so there were two of us)? Or is it because of the patch?

Also, what the heck is up with the Draenei starting area? It’s really pretty, but the quests already feel like grinding, whereas the ones in the human starting area have been fun and challenging. Even my friend (whose main is up to 33) was complaining about it.

You can join the SDMB guild at any time, the guildname is Burning Dog Legion on the Cairne server (Horde). But Cairne is a PvE server. You can do PvP in some areas and battlegrounds but very few people are flagged for PvP while they are out questing. If you roll a Horde toon on Cairne you can do a /who Burning Dog to get a list of who is online, and ask for an invite.

I think I read that the patch reduced mana costs for low-level spells, so the lower levels should go a lot faster for spellcasters now because you won’t have to spend as much time drinking. It may have also gone faster because you’ve had more practice playing. Also, your hunch is correct, if you are in a group with someone you will get a little less XP per kill than if you solo it.

Sorry, I hardly have any Alliance starting area experience, and the little I do have is all human. I had thought that the newer races (Dranei and Blood Elf) had better-designed starting areas than the classic races; at least I believe that to be true regarding the BElves.

Can’t help you there. They all have pretty much the same quests to start with. Kill X enemies, loot X items, interact with X objects, etc. I’ve always thought the Draenei and Blood Elf starting areas were much better designed, myself. I think it just comes down to which setting you prefer.

I do have to say that out of all the starting areas I’ve played (all on the Horde side, plus Humans and Dwarves) Elwynn Forest is my favorite. It’s so pretty! Maybe I’m biased, being human and all.

As a player with a serious case of alt-itis, I can tell you Elwynn is the most fun (The BE starting zone is a close second). It has a good mixture of easy and hard quests with a little Hogger thrown in.

IMHO, the worst is Mulgore (Tauren starting zone). Its big and the quests from 6-10 are pretty difficult.

If I recall correctly, the Burning Crusade starting zones were designed to be less of a hassle and provide better gear for new players.

Welcome!

I can imagine! I did the Tauren baby area recently to get my last few thousand rep points for Exalted with TB, and those quests were a PITA. And I had a fast mount! I can imagine how tedious all that running would be.

My nightmare would be leveling a Tauren in Mulgore and then moving on to the Barrens. shudder
I’m looking forward to tonight, it will be my first chance to play on my main since the patch. Any Burning Dogs want to show me the new instances?

I do see your point, the Draenei starting areas (and their main city) is a bit inconvenient. Everything is out of the way and there is quite a lot of running around. (There are a few quests that are quite well done, imho - I remember running off a cliff with wings at some point in search of totems or something - quite fun!)

If you’re starting as a human, you’re running across so much more activity as it’s a central location.

Though, in all honesty, of the two new races, I found the blood elf starting areas to be much more fun.

I agree. I loved Elwynn because of the quests and also it is very easy to make the transition between each of the surrounding zones. My personal favorite zone is Duskwood. I still remember my first character that went through there. It has a nice spooky atmosphere and the questlines are spectacular. Don’t tell me you didn’t nearly crap yourself when you first saw Stitches! He managed to sneak up behind me by the crossroads with the small alliance npc group. I hear a thudthudthud behind me and turn around to see this huge monstrosity charging straight at me.
The server I was on happened to be new so there were not any high levels to kill him! From then on i enjoyed following him into Darkshire where he proceeded to clear the town of npcs and players alike.

I actaully didn’t like Duskwood because it was a really long run from the town to the graveyard where a lot of the quests took place. You could fly to the adjacent zone, but then you still had quite a run and a swim before you could get to where you needed to be. I don’t suppose it’s too bad now that you can get a mount at 20. Duskwood is about that level, right?

It seems like they just designed it that way so that they could put that dragon in the center, but I don’t know if anyone I know bothered to go in after that dragon at all. If I remember correctly it required a really well geared raid to take it down, and it wasn’t really released until near the end of Vanilla WoW, so people just moved on to BC. I might be misremembering that, as it was several years ago.

Forgot to mention I completed the Battered Hilt quest line! It takes you to many different places, but I was pleasantly surprised at the reward. I received Quel’Delar, Lens of the Mind and promptly enchanted and equipped it. Now if I can just find a shield to go with it…
