World of Warcraft General Discussion

Amazing the way everybody in this thread but me disappears on weekends and holidays

I had myself a busy few days, starting with the achievements in the two posts above. The day after Christmas was especially busy:

Might of Dragonblight
Veteran of the Wrathgate
The Winds of the North
1000 Daily Quests Complete

The Wrathgate thing was especially satisfying. I’d been frustrated because after hunting all over Dragonblight I seemed to have run out of quests, yet I was still about 11 quests shy of the Might of Dragonblight achievement. The only remaining quests I could find were the wanted posters in Wintergarde Keep, and a quest there that (I thought) wanted to send me into Naxx. Apparently I misunderstood the quest text. I was first offered the quest months ago, and at the time I was unaware of the whole Wrathgate thing. But Naxx is hanging in the air right there next to Wintergarde, and all the quests up to that point seemed to be dealing with stuff coming out of Naxx, so I suppose it wasn’t unreasonable to think the quests were going to continue like that. But some research (prompted by the fact that my belf pally is now involved in the Horde-side quest chain leading up to Wrathgate*) showed me my error. I went back and took the quest, and followed the rest of the chain out through Wrathgate (and then Battle for Undercity, which I found extremely annoying).

  • It seems like the Horde NPCs in Agmar’s Hammer have been specifically talking about Wrathgate ever since I first got there, while I recall very little discussion of Wrathgate in Wintergarde Keep, so it’s easy to see why I missed it.

Played just a bit over the holiday, but I did get my 'lock up to 32 so I’m finally done with Gnomeregan. Last three runs have been SM Graveyard, nice and quick. I also got the green Santa’s Helper pet that I missed last year, so I have all three winter pets on my main now. I got an extra red one I’ll try to remember to put up on the AH in a few months when all the others are gone.

There will be a Burning Dog Legion dungeon run on Wednesday, normal time (about 8:30). We’ll use the random DF once we have the group together. I’m going to gather mats tonight in case we want to do a DM-North tribute run.

My Mage only just hit 34 yesterday, so I still won’t be able to join in. But I’ve got no plans and four days off this weekend, so if things go well I should be ready for next week’s run.

I’ve been back online again as well, and have Woeg the Rogue up to 31 now! Also, got some Christmas money, so I am gonna transfer my 80 DK over so I can join in on the raiding fun with the rest of y’all!

Anyone care to give me advice on levelling a warlock?

It’s been pretty quick and easy, but I’m not sure I’m being as efficient as possible. First of all, I had started out with my talents in Affliction, but kept taking aggro from my voidwalker. So I switched to Demonology which seemed to help and I only take aggro away from voidy occasionally. My standard rotation is: Immolate, Curse of Agony, Corruption on each mob (I try to pull 2-3 at a time). By then my mana is getting low. If I am soloing, I’ll hit Life Tap a couple of times and then use Drain Life to finish the mobs; If I’m in a group I’ll alternate between Life Tap/ Shadow Bolt and hope the healer takes care of me. Am I doing that right?

Voidwalker is an easy pet choice when soloing, but in a group at my level (33), should I be using Imp or Succubus for dps? And how, specifically, should I be using them? So far I’ve just let the Imp do his thing, which is basically Blood Pact and firebolts. I’ve read stuff about using him as a “mana battery” but I’m not sure how I’m supposed to do that.

Not much experience playing a warlock - my highest topped out at 21 or 22 I think - but I can tell you that when I tank, I LOVE having that extra stam from blood pact.

You would need Dark Pact, which is the 30-point Affliction talent. So you’re not going to get that if you stick with Demonology, which is what I recommend. (Or you can dual-spec at 40 and use Demon as your solo build and Affliction or Destro as your dungeon build.)

There’s ups and downs to using either an Imp or Succubus in a group. The Imp is best for when you don’t want to pay attention to your pet, as he can’t be harmed and provides Blood Pact, plus if you’re Affliction-spec you can do the Dark Pact thing. The Succubus does more DPS and has some CC abilities, but can be hurt, and you have to manage her more than the Imp.

Proooobably you’ll want to use the Succubus in 5-mans while leveling, but you’re not going to be useless if you bring the Imp along. I’ve never played a Warlock myself, so I can’t give much more than general advice.

Thanks Bosstone, I didn’t know about Dark Pact, that explains a lot. I’ve got the money on my main, so I may decide to dual-spec at 40.

I forgot to mention in my other post, I’m about to get Felhunter as well. Don’t know the pros/cons of using that vs. Imp or Succy.

So, we’ve been having fun raiding over the holiday. (My new laptop, let me show you it. tear)

TOTC10 – we made good progress despite frequent wipes, and got Jaraxxus down. Whee! Not bad for our first go. Unfortunately FC is still sticking in our craws. :smack:

Ulduar10 – we skipped Assembly of Iron on our way through cat lady, downed Freya, and then spent some time banging our heads on Hodir. On the last try, I died three seconds before the enrage, so the retadin and two trees were the last ones standing when he went down five seconds later. Man, that was a rush. (We got “I Have The Coolest Friends” too, whee).

Felhunters are mage-killers, best used against mage bosses, but that’s it. They’re not good tanks or DPS, being very specialized instead. The passive group bonus is also helpful if you’ve got a lot of casters in your group. That’s all I really know.

In terms of the damage they deal, the pecking order goes voidwalker → felhunter → imp → succubus. The succubus kicks the most butt, but is the highest maintenance of the bunch, being a fragile melee fighter and her signature ability, seduction, be rather tricky for a newer player to use. The imp has the advantage of being ranged, and providing decent tank-supporting buffs with fire shield and blood pact, but he also runs dry on mana pretty easily if the group doesn’t have a lot of downtime, and can be potent support for Destruction warlocks. The felhunter is only a serious companion for deep Affliction specs, but if you’re dealing with enemy healers, or nasty magic buffs or debuffs, the antimagic doggie is a good choice anyway. And the voidwalker…well…doesn’t serve much purpose. His aggro generation is too poor to serve in a group setting (or even a solo one, really) and Sacrifice doesn’t hold up terribly well against the damage output of elites.

If you go deep enough into demonology, the Felguard becomes your default choice, as he combines better damage output than the succubus (he cleaves!) with the durability of the voidwalker, and even has a little aggro gen and backup disruption use with intercept. By this point you’ve turned yourself into a serious pet class with all the strengths and handicaps that entails. For Affliction or Destruction, the pet is really more of an occasionally handy ornamental DOT rather than a staple part of your overall function.

Thanks for all the advice! For now I might play around with my Succubus (not like that, pervs) but will probably stick with the imp in dungeons, and voidy otherwise, and then look at dual-speccing into Affliction at 40.

My biggest problem now seems to be mana replenishment, but maybe I need to be using Drain Life / Life Tap more.

Yeah, the health/mana feedback loop is the core of the warlock resource system. This is why Affliction is common for leveling. It has powerful resource gain built in, with siphon life, haunt, more potent/hasted drain life, imp drain soul, dark pact, imp felhunter, and probably some more I’m forgetting. It’s the waterless warlock spec, but the price you pay is having to take a more active role in combat. You don’t have a voidwalker or felguard to hide behind while half-AFK like demonology does, but I personally consider that a good thing

Back in business…I switched out the failing nVidia 8800 GT for an nVidia 9800 GT (basically the same card) and then I tested the graphics by chaining enough dungeons to rack up 60 emblems of triumph for a total of 126, which in turn was used to get Faceplate of Thunderous Rampage and Shoulderplates of Trembling Rage.

Yay for LFG!

Grats on those two. I went for the T9 set (which were also slightly cheaper), and just bought the last piece of Triumph gear for Muz’s tank set, the +armor trinket; his next purchase will probably be the Conquest belt, followed shortly by the Frost cloak; I’m also going to run the Forge of Souls as often as possible in hopes of getting the boots to drop off of the giant floating head guy (why does he drop boots again? Does he wear them as earrings?).

o SILENCE! DO NOT QUESTION THE GREAT OZ!

Question: When I ran the Forge of Souls and picked up the quest from Lady Sylvanis and completed the quest, I couldn’t turn it in when I entered FoS on a second occasion. Was I supposed to run all the way back on the first occasion to turn it in to her? Should I abandon that quest and restart it since I was unable to turn it in on the second run? What am I missing here?

She shows up again at the end of FoS and lets you turn the quest in then. Look around for a question mark once the floating head guy dies.

(Then she gives you a quest to go meet her in the Pit of Saron).

Thanks Tom!..Totally missed her or I didn’t pay attention when we were chaining…The second time I was in there, I died at the end and wasn’t rezzed; I flew back to the starting point and found Lady Syl standing there having nothing to do with me, so I skipped out of the dungeon.

So I broke down and tried the Random Dungeon Finder last night, and I have to say, I was very impressed! I ended up running three times through SM GY and once through SM Lib, and though it was a bit repetitive, it was fun. The first time through I had a good group, and we flew through GY. The only problem was that there was a huntard who kept needing on gear that wasn’t great hunter gear, just because it had one attribute he wanted. Still, I enjoyed the experience enough that I jumped into LFG again, and again pulled GY.

This group was fantastic initially - Pally tank, priest healer, my rogue and two hunters for DPS. The pally and priest were AWESOME - seriously, did a fantastic job. The two hunters were ok - but about halfway through the run, both DC’d and never came back. Me, the pally, and the priest finished it off, and we seriously tore through it. We did such a great job together that we decided to stick together and re-queue as a team after booting the DCs. We again got GY, this time adding a mage and a hunter, and it was awesome. Everyone worked really well together, and we tore through it with ease. Alas, our tank had to go, but the rest of us had done really well together, so we said, hell, lets do one more round.

We got a new tank, a warrior, and this time got SM Lib. Alas, our tank was no where near as skilled as the last guy, and though he was warrior he had a terrible time holding aggro. He also pulled WAY too many adds each time, and were it not for the awesome skills of the priest, we’d have wiped from the get go. AS it was, we did wipe once, but then finished it out.

I got some great gear from the random sack of goodies the randoms awarded, so all in all, I am definitely fond of this new system.
