World of Warcraft General Discussion

More random dungeon adventures, involving two consecutive runs that couldn’t have been more different:

My less-lame boomkin randomed into H Halls of Reflection. I panicked. Everyone else in the run had way better gear than I did, and this is a tough heroic. I decided to stick it out, hoping I wouldn’t suck bad enough to ruin the gauntlet at the end. The first part goes well, I’m a helpful lil’ thunderchicken, using assist and removing poison and all that good stuff. We kill Falric and then Marwyn, and off the latter drops Orca Hunter’s Harpoon. I go whoa, since I’m still using an item lvl 200 staff from the Argent Tournament vendors (the burning-kitty-headed staff, if you’ve seen it). Everyone rolls to disenchant, and I’m typing out, “um, I think I could use that for my feral spec.” The tank is halfway up the hall to the next encounter and types, “then go ahead and need.” Whee! I slapped a +30 stamina gem in there. I told my husband and like any good started-as-a-hunter player, replied, “That would be a good hunter weapon.” (Automatic response from the crowd, “You always say that!”) Very professional run, no assumptions about what we’re doing from the tank (comment to hide out of LOS on the left wing at the start, comment to hide out at the beginning of the gauntlet), and we got the achievement for finishing the gauntlet in a short time at the end. I turned out a respectable-for-my-gear DPS, and no mean comments from people who aren’t taking that into account.

Anyway, awesome! Now the lowest-level items I have for my feral set are my two trinkets (Black Heart and Darkmoon Card: Greatness (Agi), lvl 200), the Platinum Mesh Cloak at 213, and my 219 boots from HToC, Treads of Dismal Fortune.

Next run: Drak’Theron Keep. Ho-hum dungeon for people our level. We have a tank warrior, DPS warrior, healer pally, DPS priest (shadow), and me. We get through the first boss and on our way up to the spider room, the tank says, “Oh, you know what’s great? I don’t have any druid buffs. Or priest buffs.” I tell him that he does on my screen, and he says “oh yeah, now I see them.” But he’s right, we don’t have priest buffs. He says twice in group “fort” and then sends a tell, apparently, because the priest - named “Iolpriest” with a starting I so that in the non-serif game font it looks like “lolpriest” as in LOL - says “don’t send me tells for fort, I don’t buff it.” :smack: We’re at the entry to Novos’ room, and the tank says, “I’m not moving if I don’t get Fort.” Someone starts the event and we start killing adds. Finally I check my bag - the tank has joined us by this time - and I have a Fortitude scroll from my Scribe. I right click it and type “druid fort ftw.” Then the shadow priest starts “claiming” (yeah right) that he never trained it because it’s too expensive. Meanwhile, during the kills on the way to King Whatever the dino and the trolls/undead after, the tank is claiming that the DPS warrior is drawing too much aggro and “wants to tank”, then backs off at one point and won’t tank for a second, to try to make his point. Shadow priest claims his TPS is the worst he’s seen and that’s why the DPS warrior ends up tanking. More bitching back and forth. Pally and I are quiet. Finally right before the last boss I pipe up with, “Christ, this is the whiniest group I’ve ever been in.” People shut up until the kill is done, where the tank tells everyone to f-off “except the druid, he’s cool.”

:smack:

You know, I really didn’t care by the end who, if anyone, was “right,” because they were annoying me so much.

Oh, and last night I went on an all-guild HPoS run as boomkin with my husband (healing pally), a frost DK tank, a DPS DK, and a mage. The tank had huge problems staying up during the later fights, especially the ramp leading up towards Tyrannus, the tunnel, and the Tyrannus fight itself. My husband said sure, his pally healer isn’t the best, but he knows how to heal (having a shaman healer main), and in those fights he spent most of his time just spamming heals on the tank and even then he’d get killed by burst damage. We wiped 2-3 times on the ramp, once in the tunnel, and once on Tyrannus - right at the start as he got both the boss debuff and the Hoarfrost from the dragon. We only got through the tunnel on the second run because I was dropping HoTs on the tank, and ditto with the second Tyrannus attempt, but add HoTs on the mage who kept standing too near frost puddles and generally getting beat up. I had been leading the DPS in the group, but fell to second place after playing pretend healer. I’m pretty sure this was the tank’s issue but I know nothing about DK tanking.

I don’t want to sound like one of those customer service people who ask if your computer is plugged in, but did you dismount before you tried to use the flask or whatever, or were you trying to use it while on your gryphon (although on the ground/on the bones, not airborne)? Did you try it dismounted? That MAY be a problem, if you were still on the gryphon (even if grounded).

Although it should have said something like “You are mounted” rather than “Need Bones” if that were the case.

Some of them do, some of them don’t. It can be kind of a tossup. Nerf anything down low enough, though, and you’ll probably find *someone *who wants it.

Stacking resistance gear is a think of the past. Hardly anyone even bothered with the crafted Frost Resist gear for Naxx or Ulduar; they’re certainly not going to waste their cloak enchant on Frost Resistance.

Anybody who might use Massacre is probably using Berserking instead.

+10 Stats to chest is the best option for pretty much anybody, and solid for everyone else.

At 80:
Rend > Execute > Overpower > Mortal Strike > Slam

Note that this is a **priority **list, **not **a rotation. You don’t go through the abilities in order, but rather use the best one you can each time, then start over at the top of the list. So this basically means: if Rend isn’t up or is about to expire, (re)apply Rend; then, use the highest active ability on the priority list.

On a single target, Bladestorm is only a DPS increase if you use it directly after an Overpower. Sweeping Strikes + Bladestorm in big packs of mobs = win.

I can’t double-check it from work, but this should be a good 80 Arms spec. Remove points as appropriate to make it workable for your current level.

He’s a world boss from TBC. IIRC, the yelling was the cue that he was spawned, so you could get your raid together and go kill him. Doubt anybody bothers with him nowadays, though.

Nothing will ever take you out of action except logging out or exiting the game (and even that can lag a bit). That’s how MMOs work: you can’t ever pause them. As long as you’re online in the game, you can be attacked. If you haven’t yet, it was just pure luck.

Dunno what’s up with the “transparent” thing. That sounds weird. I see you’ve opened a ticket about it–could be a bug.

Woooo! Grats! Do I remember that that Pally is a Tailor? If so, don’t forget to go pick up your new cloak recipe from the trainer in Dalaran!

For 40 gems, I believe the only correct response is for him to level a mule to 10 on his new server and transfer it back with the gems he took.

Alternatively, he could open a ticket and see if a GM would remove the gems from his inventory and transfer them back to yours.

Nope, 's not just you. I’m that way, too.

1.) Raids. With Triumph badge gear, you should be equipped well enough for at least up to ICC10. If you’ve never raided before, you might want to start with some “easier” content from earlier in Wrath, even though the drops won’t do you as much good. Naxx PUGs might be hard to find, but people still run Ulduar, and ToC is still going. To be a good PUG, be sure to (a) bring consumables like food, potions, flasks, and reagents, and (b) do some research ahead of time. Read Wowhead and WoWWiki pages on bosses and watch at least one strategy video for each boss, if you can. Search YouTube for Tankspot and you’ll find my personal favorites.

2.) PvP. You can do Battlegrounds, Arenas, or Wintergrasp. For Arenas, you can do practice skirmishes with randomly matched groups, or you can form a permanent team with other players (two-, three-, or five-man teams). Battlegrounds range in size from 10 to 40 players per side; different BGs have different objectives, so it’s probably a good idea to skim an article about each one before heading in. Wintergrasp is a huge world PvP zone, with battles every two hours.

3.) Achievements. There are a lot of achievements tied to raiding and PvP, but many more that can be pursued by the solo or casual player. There are exploration achievements, quest completion achievements, pet and mount collection achievements, profession achievements, world event achievements (including not only the various holidays but also the ongoing Argent Tournament), 5-man dungeon achievements, etc.

As to what to do with those Frost badges you’re stacking up:

1.) Better gear. This is going to be the best gear you can get outside of the Icecrown Citadel raids–and some items might even be better.

2.) Cashy monies. You can buy one Primordial Saronite, the new crafting material, for 23 Emblem of Frost. Depending on your server’s economy, one of these will probably go at auction for anywhere from 2,000 to 2,600 gold.

On my main, I spend my Frost badges on gear. That’s because she’s an endgame raider, so (a) she needs to have the best possible gear and (b) she has access to a steady stream of Frost badges from raiding ICC. On my other 80, I spend my Frost badges on Primordial Saronite. My reasoning was, with how little time I have to spend on her (and no time to raid ICC and get more badges), by the time I saved up enough to get more than a few pieces of badge gear, we’d probably be into a new tier of content, and Frost badges would be the new Triumph ones, flowing like water. However, the money I can make off of the PS at auction can be used to improve her in many other ways right now: from crafted and BOE armor to new recipes to regemming gear for a new spec.

Woo, good weekend for me! After finishing up ICC25 and running ICC10, along with a couple of daily random dungeons, I’ve finally got enough badges to get my 4-piece T10 set! Woohoo! The 4 piece bonus for mages is quite nice (as is the 2 piece), and I can’t wait to try it out in our next raid.

I’m just has happy that I finally picked up the Dislodged Foreign Object from Rotface! I’ve been lusting after that trinket ever since I heard about it, and it dropped last night when I had enough DKP to claim it as my own! It makes up a bit for the fact that we’ve never seen Reign of the Dead drop in a main raid.

Also picked up the Soulcleave Pendantfrom ICC10, and my DK got to tank a couple of alt runs this weekend–no gear, but the badges are nice–I think now that he’s got his 2 piece T10 bonus, he’s going to be kindly donating his Frost emblems to my main so he can get enough Primordial Saronite to get the Leggings of Woven Death(aka the Pants of Godliness).

So it was a productive weekend for me. I even got the chance to level my paladin up to 66–it’s still sad how fast he runs out of mana, how bad his gear is, and how scared I am to even try tanking any instances on him, but I figure once he gets to Northrend I should be able to build him a decent tank set with crafted gear.

I looked at wowhead, and they suggest a few things to try when looking for the right spot to stand in: a) go stand at the bottom of the axe the giant skeleton is carrying, OR b) stand on the little island in front of the guy’s rib cage.

OR, if you have a map mod that gives you coordinates, the coordinates are 40, 30.

Anyhoo, it’s neat to see the Alliance side of this since my little hpriest just picked up the Horde version which doesn’t say boo about said giant demon bones lying there. just “Oi. The nasty Alliance paladins are out to clean up the Pools, go forth and stop them with extreme prejudice.” So I’ve been wondering about them ever since!

Oh! and my guild cleared TOTC10 yesterday with a pugged tree and dps.  We’ve been picking up a few extra people in recruiting and had good luck with FC – priest, pally, shaman, boomie, rogue, and uh one more I can’t remember who. Our strat ended up having our DK death-grip the priest out of them, then everyone dogpiling like a mofo. The DK didn’t get to hit too many other things either, we made him keep the shaman ice chained. Went quite nicely!

Yeah, I’ve been having problems with this instance too. I’ve never had a fail in HoR, but the flippin Pit is the worst. We don’t have much trouble on the ramp, but I think the key is to watch the casters. The fire-guys have an AoE hellfire channel that is pretty terrible, and the caster chick in the middle drops Empowered Shadowbolts that do at least 5k each to my Enhance Shammy. If you can get interrupts on those two spells it’s way easier to take out the groups. The next set is easier, I think. Those ice-skeletons just need to be interrupted before they can finish the ice circle.

The problem that I have is with the Garfrost encounter. That dude is a pain if all of the group members aren’t on the same page. If the tank can keep him turned away from the group (especially on part 2) and the rest of the group remembers to shed their stacks of permafrost, then it’s not too bad. I’m pretty sure that it can be dispelled too, but I’ve never tried it. Unfortunately, these things rarely happen the first time in a PuG for some reason.

That’s pretty much what we do as well. We played with an aggro experiment that said the Warrior’s aggro was drawn by a combo of low armor, low health, and (something else). So we had the bright idea to have our tank (a really geared pally) strip down before the encounter and then re-gear in his ret set so that his health would be pretty low and his armor would be lower than usual, and then aggro the warrior. It never really worked well because he still had almost as much hp as our clothies. In the end we just did the same tactic that you did.

I found out that you can’t misdirect a Distracting Shot. It just makes your target attack you. At least, that’s what happens when you’re fighting the FCs. Instantly made the Warrior super pissed at my hunter. :smack:

The mind boggles. Srsly, Fort might be one of the best class buffs in the game, and he’s too stubborn to use it? I don’t believe he can’t spend 5g to learn it.

Also - are you in the same battlegroup as Cairne? because that name - Iolpriest - sounds really familiar. Of course I wouldn’t have noticed the buff issue because I usually buff the group myself (I even use Shadow Protection on the party even when we’re unlikely to need it. Mana is free and candles are cheap.)

Many thanks to Kene and Kahmu, who were willing to group with my Belf Paladin Kalathan (yes, it was an all “K” night on Cairne yesterday!) and run thru a couple of random heroics. We did Halls of Stone and Azol’Nezruj (or however you spell it). Great fun - Kahmu tanking as a bear was great to watch, Kene was healing like crazy, and I just flailed away with my usual Retribution rotation and did what DPS I could.

Just before we grouped though, I did my first ever Pit of Saron run. Man, that was scary. I told the rest of the group that it was my first time, and they gave me guidance against the bosses, but I still died three times. First against the first boss Garfrost, when I didn’t run away fast enough. Second, against the second boss Krick and Ick, when I darted back in just as Poison Nova went off (ouch!), and the third time when the entire group wiped at the very end of the tunnel leading to Tyrannus. After the third wipe, I couldn’t find the entrance back into the instance (foolishly, never having been up there in non-ghost form), so the shaman had to rez me after he finished his corpse run. Embarrassing.

Still, we managed to kill Tyrannus, so now I’m unlocked for Halls of Reflection, except that my gear isn’t good enough. I’m wondering if it would be worth trying it in non-heroic mode, as a way of getting my feet wet. Hmmmm…

Yeah, I think he was full of it when he was claiming that he didn’t know the spell, and was just continuing to be a jerk. I’m sure that even a “I’m not a healer/buffer, I’m a DPS, dammit” shadow priest would have Fortitude for at least buffing himself on soloing.

I just looked it up - there are 18 “Iolpriest” characters across the realms. I’m in the Bloodlust battlegroup (Sen’jin), and Cairne is in Emberstorm.

Runestar: I would definitely do non-heroic Halls of Reflection first - preferably with people you know! It’s a nice introduction to the run, and my guildies and I ran it on the first night the instances opened, without all kinds of lovely Triumph badge gear to help us out.

Here’s what Blizz said I should do (it’s kinda long)

Windows Vista
-Click the Start button, select All Programs, select Accessories and select Windows Explorer.
-In the new window click the + beside the My Computer option, this should expand a list.
-Click the + beside the Hard Disk with the (C:) label on the end (Or whichever Hard Disk the game was installed on).
-Click the + beside Program Files.
-Scroll down until you find World of Warcraft in the list and double click it.
-In the panel on the right there should be a list of files and folders, the WTF, CACHE, and INTERFACE folders should be in this list.
-Single click one of those folders and it should become highlighted, once that folder is highlighted press the Delete key on your keyboard. Do this for all three folders.
-If the UAC is enabled, which it is by default, then the system will also be caching these three folders. Near the navigation bar, please click on the link for “Compatibility Files”. Once “Compatibility Files” has been clicked, this will take you to the VirtualStore folder. Please check if there is a World of Warcraft folder(usually located in the programs folder), and if so please delete the three folders WTF, Cache and Interface from this location as well.

Note: If you are having difficulty locating the Virtual Store, you will need to manually navigate to the Virtual Store directory.

Using the “Organize” option toward the upper left-hand corner of the explorer window, select “Folder and Search Options” followed by the “View” tab in the new window. Ensure that “Show Hidden Files and Folders” is enabled.

  • You will now be able to navigate to the following path and remove the Cache, Interface, and WTF folders:
  • C:\Users%username%\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\World of Warcraft\
  • Substitute %username% for your windows account username.
  • Example: C:\Users\JDOE\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\World of Warcraft\

-Once these extra three folders have been deleted you can close Windows Explorer.
-You will need to restart your system at this point.
-Start the game again using the World of Warcraft Launcher, when starting the game right click on the game icon, and select Run As Administrator. This will make sure that any settings you change in game are saved correctly.

-Note: Please do not run any UI installers or load any mods beforehand, as we want to eliminate them as part of the issue.

=======================================================

Okay, I’m shot out of the water to begin with because the only folder I have under the WoW section is the “read me” one, and nothing shows, and a manual search for the “Virtual Store” shows nothing under “hidden files or folders”.

I’m going to start another ticket, but I am wondering if a complete re-install would solve this?

Thanks

Q

For some reason on my computer, the real “World of Warcraft” folder is not in the “Programs Files” folder, but actually in the C: drive’s main directory. Try going to the C: drive and scrolling down the list of folders, see if your real WoW folder is there?

10 man runs. As soon as we get the numbers.

I mispoke. the policy is that you should at least have all slots filled with whatever you can get off of badge vendors with triumph badges. There are all sorts of slots where valor (or even heroism) badge items are the best available from triumph badges.

The point is, we sort of expect folks to gear up to the extent that badge vendors alolow you to. You can now get as many triumph badges as you want if you do random dungeons. Before TOC, you basically needed a few Naxx runs to really be Ulduar ready. Now you can be ICC ready purely on ICC PUGs and Triumph badges (and throw in a slot or two of frost badge items from doing dailies and weeklies).

Of course there are ilevel 200 trinkets that are still pretty damn close to BiS (the obsidina sanctum and the greatness cards come to mind).

It took one guildie who had been away from game since BC days two or three weekends (and a little bit of playing furing the week) to get ICC ready. Its just not that hard anymore.

Nope, not there, FH. I found some stuff called lua, but not a yellow WoW file folder other than the “read me” one.

Thanks

Q

I’m nearly totally geared for all 10 and 25mans now…I’m about 2/3 of the way to getting the Malevolent Girdle that costs 60 frost and then I need to replace my boots…but there seems to be no viable replacement of DPS plate that I can obtain that isn’t PvP (lvl 245), or that is 25man, or that BS recipe that will be a pain to find, yet alone accumulate the frost required to get. Or maybe I should look at boots that are for healers or tanks that have the strength requirements better than my current boots.

wathc tankspot.com videos and join a raiding guild?

Uh, I don’t suppose there’s a way to contact a GM from outside the game and ask to have stuff moved from my mailbox to my bank, is there? 'Cuz otherwise I need to find someone I trust to let me log in and take care of that.

Mm, I think there’s a way to install the game elsewhere. My work computer has XP, not Vista, so I forget how to get to the Search feature that will let you search the whole hard drive. If you can find that, I’d search for a folder called “World of Warcraft” - it’s possible you have more than one on your computer.

I guess I excluded Bone Drake’s Enameled Boots when I specified crit as a filter, but still…we are a long way from 10man ICC for me to get a shot at them.
