World of Warcraft General Discussion

Agreed, I wasn’t a fan of the video at all. I’m hoping there is plenty of RP epic-ness surrounding the event.

It’s a health boost, which is definitely useful for a 'lock, because you turn your health into mana. (OTOH, the herbalism self-heal is probably just about as useful for the same reason).

One more data point - I’m on a “New” server, which as I understand it means the AH will be much quieter. Would that cause you to lean towards mining or herbalism, or is it not a factor?

My gut feeling would be Mining–a lot of the market for Herbalism is endgame raiders making various potions/flasks/etc., and on a new server that wouldn’t be as much of a factor. Sure, Inscriptionists need plants (as do Alchemists), but Mining is useful for Blacksmiths, Engineers, and Jewelcrafters.

You’d probably be fine with either, though, if you’re trying to make money. Metal and herbs both tend to sell decently well.

Skinning: Crit Rating
Mining: Stamina
Herbalism: HOT

The Stam and the HOT will be about equal usefulness to a Warlock. The Stam, IIRC, will partially transfer to your pet, esp. if you’re Demo, and Stamina in general is decent for 'Locks because of Life Tap; the HOT can only be used on you, but it can be a nice extra “oh shit” button or a way to heal yourself back up faster after a Life Tap.

That wouldn’t explain the prices for even lower-level herbs, though.

Really, though, it’s impossible to comment without knowing the individual server’s economy. Your best bet, OAOW, is to actually search your faction’s Auction House for various herbs, ores, and smelted bars, and see what they’re selling for right now. (You probably want to check a few times over the course of maybe a week or so, since prices aren’t 100% consistent from day to day.)

Speaking of “New” servers, gathering, and the AH … when I rolled up my troll hunter, Jabloo, (lvl 43 now) I decided to roll him on Zangarmarsh, which was labeled “New Players”, even though I’m not a new player. My main reason was that I wanted a low-population server I could hop over to for those times when Lightbringer’s load was “High” and lagging badly. But now I’m not entirely certain that “New Players” was an indicator of it being a “new server”. There seem to be level-80s galore, though I suppose it’s entirely possible they’re transfers from older, high-pop servers. But Zangarmarsh’s population is now listed as “High” in the realm selection screen almost as often as Lightbringer’s is.

That said, I had Jabloo take Mining and Skinning as his professions. I’ve been really surprised to discover the market for leather seems to be practically non-existent, at least for the lower-level leathers. I built up quite a backlogged supply of Light and Medium Leather because my auctions kept expiring. I finally, at one point, had a total of about 15 stacks of Light Leather up on the AH at the same time, and was extremely surprised when one person came along and bought all of it. I was so surprised that I sent the guy a mail thanking him for his purchase, because most of that leather had been reposted 6-8 times. Anyway, the low-level ore market doesn’t seem to be much better on that server.

Eilyssana, my 80 human paladin: I’m now a mere 20 Champion’s Seals away from purchasing my Argent Charger. I’ll get 10 more Seals from dailies today, but I have a couple long-ass shifts at work on Friday and Saturday and won’t have time for WoW, so I’ll have to wait until Sunday to get the last 10. Eilyssana has been alternating spending her Champion’s Seals on BoA items for my alts and new toys for herself. She spent the first 60 on the heirloom plate shoulders for my warrior, the next 50 on the Argent Crusader’s Tabard for herself, and then the next 60 on the heirloom cloth robe for my mage.

I also spent some time trying to farm Crystallized Fire and Shadow, which I need to make Eternals for Spellweave and Ebonweave. Farming the Fire is turning into a royal pain. Before I learned to make Spellweave, I’d built up a nice supply from a combination of finding it in ore nodes when Eily was still a miner, as well as from the Seething Revenants I’d kill while doing the SoH daily “Hot and Cold”. But since then farming the stuff has been unpleasant because 1) I suspect Blizz decreased the drop rate on those Revenants - the drops seem to have become much lower than the 29% listed on Wowhead, and 2) there is always a crowd of people there farming, racing each other to every Revenant that spawns. I finally discovered that those fire elementals way over in the northwestern part of Borean Tundra were a better source. For Crystallized Shadow, I’d always gotten it from Titanium nodes when Eily was a miner. But my supply of that had also dwindled since I started making Ebonweave. My new friend Lomgren pointed me toward the Deathbringer Revenants that populate Frostmourne Cavern in Dragonblight. Whoa, jackpot! The cave is literally swarming with those mobs, they’re easy to kill, and they respawn almost as fast as I can kill them. And I had the place all to myself. In about 30 minutes I had enough Crystallized Shadows to make 3 Eternals. In any case, I’m not going to have to farm like that very much. With the cooldowns on the special cloth, I only need 2 of each Eternal every 4 days.

Castariora, my draenei warrior, is now level 65, and she’s only just finished Hellfire Peninsula and is now in Zangarmarsh. I think I’ll hop her to Northrend as soon as she hits 68 instead of my past practice of trying to get all my storylines finished up before moving on. She actually arrived in Outland at level 63 because I was trying to finish WPL/EPL and all those storylines first, but eventually I got tired of dealing with all the diseases/poisons/debuffs in the Plagues, as previously mentioned, and just said “screw it”, handed in those quests that were complete, abandoned everything else, and headed for the Dark Portal. I can always take her back to do the Old World quests later if I want.

Likewise Svelexi, my draenei fire mage - I’m going to send her to Outland at level 60 and Northrend at 70 (rather than 58/68 - being a clothie, I’d like her to overlevel the quests/mobs a bit). I’d actually like to get her to NR as soon as possible; Castariora will be my third toon in NR when she gets there, and my third consecutive plate-wearing DPS toon to get there; I want to get my mage there so I can actually choose different quest rewards for once

Anyway, once Eilyssana finished up her dailies and her farming yesterday I decided to spend the rest of the day playing Svelexi, as I’d neglected her for several days. Benefitting from the heirloom robe + 2 full bars of rested XP, I got her from barely into level 53 all the way to level 55. Thanks to some new talents, she’s become even more fun. I’m really enjoying the Firestarter talent now that I’ve figured out how to use it. The way it works, when I use her Blast Wave or Dragon’s Breath spells, my next Flamestrike spell is instant cast and costs no mana. This actually saved my butt once yesterday. I was killing Deadwood furbolgs in northern Felwood, and ran almost completely out of mana, so I sat down to drink in what I thought was a safe place. But almost immediately I was attacked from behind by a furbolg I either hadn’t seen or which respawned behind me right after I sat down. I had just enough mana left to cast Mana Shield and then hit the furbolg with Dragon’s Breath (which has the added benefit of Disorienting the target for 5 seconds). Firestarter procced and I dropped a free Flamestrike on top of him, then popped my Mana Gem for the instant 800 or so mana it gives me, and added a couple fireballs to the DoT the Flamestrike was doing, and the furbolg fell over dead in short order. Great fun :stuck_out_tongue:

This Wall o’ Text was brought to you by Mister Rik Productions, LLC, EOE

Honestly, Mister Rik, your altisis is far worse than mine, at least I level my alts one at a time.

No, I meant that it actually made sense to me, not that what you wrote didn’t make sense!

I thought to myself, “Well that makes sense!” (that the game wouldn’t pause to keep me from being attacked, because it wouldn’t be that way in real life).

Because I get whooshed over so many simple things these days, that it really surprised me that I would understand what you wrote.

Is what I meant.

Not that what you wrote was non-sensical.

And not that I DON’T understand a lot of what you write to help me out, just if I don’t look at it closely or write it down, it’s likely to fade.

Thanks

Q

Altitis? What altitis? I only have 27 toons!

1.) After a realm is formed, it’s locked to transfers for a period of time; I think three months. So it’s possible that (a) it wasn’t actually a new server, (b) a bunch of people powerleveled to 80, or (c) you’re seeing everyone who’s transferring in after the three-month period.

2.) I’m never sure if “High” is the same number from realm to realm, or if difference realms have different numbers of servers supporting them, so “high” would be relative to the load the servers can handle. I do know that Borean Tundra was almost always “High,” at least in the evenings when I was on, despite being a newer server (I transferred over as soon as xfers opened up).

Good! That’s what I was aiming for: Quasi-comprehensibility.

I think you just coined a new term, young lady!

For here on the The Dope anyway!

Thanks!

I am very happy - ding 77 I can fly again! The only pain is that Friday and Saturday evenings are the two evenings a week I promise Mrs martu I wont play and I only hit the milestone at the end of last night’s session. Oh well delayed gratification is supposed to be good for us or something.

Mister Rik 27 toons is very impressive. I am also jealous.

just auctioned my 1st stack of copper bars. other people had stacks on at 10 golds. This being myfirst time and wanting a sale, i put on at 2 golds starting, 4 golds buy out. Went inside 5 mins. Next time up price a little it seems. 4 golds is the most I have had with any char ever at this game. Cheers for the advice guys

Yay for your first successful auction!

Here’s a wee word of advice - if the cheapest stack is 10G and you want a quick sale, then put yours on for 9G 99S.

Please don’t vastly undercut the market, because all you end up doing is lowering the price point at what people are prepared to pay, which then lowers the amount you can earn from selling at the AH.

all advice gratefully received. Next stack will be within a few % of existing auctions

What price would you suggest for a tigerseye jewel? It’s coloured as uncommon, but I can find no existing auctions to use as a reference.

I’m at work, so can’t check myelf, although auction prices can vary a lot from server to server.

I’ve not read this whole thread, so forgive me if this has been covered before, but have you considered using an auction add-on? I use Auctionator, which you can get from Curse. It’s quite a light add-on, not as fully-featured as the more CPU-greedy Auctioneer.

Basically each time you go to the auction house, you do a scan, and the buy now prices of all the items on the AH get put into a database. The first time you do the scan, it takes aaaages, but after that, it’s usually only about 10 seconds.

Then, when you look at an item in your inventory, it will give you an auction price based on what it’s seen in the past. That way you don’t have to rely on an item being listed in the auction house when you visit (although that’s always worth a check, of course!).

Another handy feature is that you can tell Auctionator that every time you put an auction up, you want it to undercut the lowest current auction by a certain value. So I have mine set to undercut by 1S.

will look into it. I don’t currently have any add-ons. Are these something you purchase or are they freeware? Any mal-ware risk with them?

It really depends on the server. What can help is an addon like Auctioneer or the cut down version that is fine for most people AuctionLite. However you need to use them for a while so they can build up a historical record of prices for situations like yours where you can’t compare a price.

Sites like wowhead do have suggested buyout prices though I am not sure where they get this data from (anyone??) so currently wowhead says 50s each for Tigerseye

Thanks. I have been selling em at 1s to vendors due to lack of knowledge. I need to find a good guild for this kind of stuff.
