World of Warcraft General Discussion

A quick warning about /assist. You want to be careful about assisting the tank. A lot of tanks tab target. That is, they are using the Tab button to cycle through all targets in range. They tend to tab pretty quick to keep an eye on threat on multiple targets and assisting can cause problems. You can hit a secondary target that the tank is only using AoE attacks on and aggro it. Even worse is if the tank is facing the a different nearby group of mobs and you are ranged DPS then you might pull them down on your heads.

Generally you want to assist another DPS. Pick one that is cranking out more damage than you and you shouldn’t have any threat issues. They will always be ahead of you on the threatmeter. Also in a random dungeon if you see a DPS from the same realm as the tank you can assist them. Likely they are a guildie or friend of the tank and familiar with how they like the pulls to go.

But really I wouldn’t assist at all. If the tank is concerned about threat then they should mark the targets. If they aren’t marking then try to use AoE attacks as much as possible. Grabbing aggro once in a while isn’t a huge issue so long as you don’t get one-shotted. All tanks have a taunt they can use every 6 seconds to get mobs back on em and other tricks as well.

You will die a lot. People see a lvl 78 and think, “Free HK!!!” It helps if you stay in groups. Also you might find that if you go Holy and are healing people they will notice and try to help keep you alive. Healing WG is pretty easy assuming you have Healbot or something. Mostly people die when they are focussed by more than one enemy. You won’t be able to keep them up through that but mostly you can heal through the damage they are taking while they kill the enemy.

Remember that as a 78 you are often getting honor when you are dead from the kills of others in your raid. And you still get credit for the quests if someone takes down a tower or something. So you should definately be running every time the quests are up at the very least.

When I was coming up you ran WG to get PvP epics to get into heroics. Nowadays with the Icecrown instances you don’t really need to go that route but it’s still a good source of honor. Once you find a friendly jewel cutter you don’t have to buy any gems. Just trade 10K honor pts for a raw gems (in Oldtown in Stormwind) and get the cuts you want. Plus WG is fun.

Well, at least now he has someone to talk to besides noob Death Knights.

Well, he’s not going to have to worry about that too much longer…

Another good way to just farm the charms (hey, that rhymes!) is to do the ‘Shoot-em-up’ daily for Ebon faction. You can just sit there shooting dragons all day, never taking damage, and racking up the charms. I think I got 5 full bracelets in 15 minutes. Woulda done more but I have woefully little bag-space.

As another note on the bracelets, am I the only one who feels sad that, alliance-side, the leader of the gnomes doesn’t get any?

And on a non-holiday note, my rogue in Burning Dog (Ginsusan) really needs Auchindon. Anyone able to schedule some time with me on that? (Ginsusan’s currently level 73)

This made me realize that Vol’jin, the leader of the Horde’s refugee race (trolls), doesn’t get one either. I guess you actually have to have a capital of your own (that you’re currently occupying) to qualify.
That said, I think I’d like to see the gnomes reinstated in Gnomeregan. It’s not like anyone actually WANTS to run it as an instance…just liberate it and give it back. Think of how happy you’ll make the dwarves (and everyone else) of Ironforge!

Thanks - erm what do you mean by ‘quests are up’ exactly?

Do you not want to find a pug with the Dungeon Finder? Or has that not worked?

I’ll be on tonight with Kene if you want help, but we’ll probably need another – I can’t hold aggro very well. It was hard running two people through Strat a couple weeks ago, which is 5 levels lower.

There are rumors that this may happen in Cataclysm. So far, they’re just rumors, and I’m doubtful unless the geography changes a -lot- (who needs two capitol cities -that- close to each other?), but I’d love to see it happen: My gnome has been planting Gnomergan flags -everywhere- (including on top of Frostmourne’s altar in HoR) and ‘claiming’ land as ‘New Gnomeregan’. She also claims that once Gnomeregan is liberated, she’s going to open a sandwich shop there.

And as for PuGing Auchindon… I’m an idiot. I never thought of doing that. :smack:

I thought of this after posting, but if you’re 73, you may be too high a level to use the dungeonfinder for Auchindon.

That’s great! And mounts at 20 are soooo cheap these days - 5g total, I think for training and mount? I am pulling anywhere from 50-70g a day now on my level 22 character on Wyrmrest, and I started there with no seeding money and only one bag donated by a friendly player. Woohoo!

E-yup. One guy in my Battle Before the Citadel group had the charm bracelet quest and the chat window was a steady stream of “So-and-so has created [Lovely Charm]”.

Alas, I didn’t realize most of the holiday quests were going to be dailies (actually, I was almost done with my Argent Tourney dailies before I even realized the holiday was upon us), and my pally used up her daily allotment of dailies in Icecrown before I ever got her to SW. So she was able to do the quest chain involving tracking down where the chemicals were coming from, but that was pretty much it. She managed to make a few Charm Bracelets, but couldn’t hand in the quests because they’re dailies.

But thanks to the dailies, she did get her Argent Charger yesterday. Damn that’s a sweet-looking horse!

I’ve noticed an interesting pattern when I group for the Threat From Above daily. I have now died doing that quest four times. And every time I’ve died, I’ve been in a 3-man group comprised of my paladin and either two rogues or a mage and a rogue. As near as I can figure it, the problem boils down to 1) as the only plate-wearer, it falls on me to “tank” Chillmaw, and as Ret I’m not geared for tanking and don’t have the HP; 2) neither mages nor rogues provide any type of defensive buff. If there is another paladin, or a priest, or a druid in the group, I don’t die. So I’ve had to change up my tactics a bit. One of the biggest issues is those Bombadiers and their bombs. Since I’m meleeing Chillmaw, when it dies it falls right on top of me and the Bombadiers. Thanks to the size of the corpse, I can’t see a friggin’ thing (for some reason turning on nameplates doesn’t help me in that situation) so I end up just hitting <TAB> and attacking blind. Which means I’m still in there when the bombs start going off. So my new approach is, as soon as Chillmaw dies I get the hell out of there, and then take a moment to identify exactly where the bombadiers are. If I’m lucky at least one of them will follow me out from under the corpse and I can deal with him safely while my groupmates take care of the other two.
I ended up spending most of yesterday doing the holiday stuff on my draenei warrior and mage. You just have to love the randomness when trying to get the Be Mine! achievement. My paladin got 5 of the 8 candies last year, and yesterday she traded in Charm Bracelets for Love Tokens to buy more bags of candy, and it ended up taking almost three more full bags to get those last three candies. So when my warrior tried, I just went ahead and bought three bags to start with so I didn’t have to keep returning to the vendor for more … and then proceeded to get all 8 different candies from the first bag :smack:

I was kind of surprised I ended up playing as much as I did yesterday. On Saturday I worked an 11.5-hour shift that ended at 8:30 PM, and I had to be right back to work at 5:30 AM Sunday. I didn’t actually get to sleep until after 10:00 Saturday night, so I was pretty much zombified when I woke up. It was just a short 2-hour shift, but I sort of figured I’d come home and take a nap at some point during the day. It wasn’t to be, though. I started playing WoW as soon as I got home, and though my weariness caused a bit of eye-hand-coordination problems at first (kept hitting the wrong keys), it got better and I ended up playing until almost midnight Sunday. It only took four cans of energy drink over the course of the day!

The dwarf paladin I met in Icecrown is turning into a handy partner, even outside of group questing. Since my pally is a tailor, I gave him a couple Frostweave Bags that had been sitting in my guild bank for a while (all my alts on that server are already equipped with them), and since then he’s been feeding me mats to make more and more of them for him. He happens to be a blacksmith so in return, my miner warrior smelted up a load of Fel Iron Bars and he made her the full Fel Iron plate armor set. And then because he had the mats lying around, he also made her the full Adamantite Plate set (which she can’t wear for a couple more levels). I’m trying to convince him to form a raid group with me this week so that I can /pity the Love Fool in Naxx  (I researched it on Wowhead and discovered I can get credit by just popping through the portal, dropping the Love Fool, /pity-ing it, and popping back out. No fighting necessary.)

I am, and I don’t have the rep / key for heroic.

Sunday, my husband and I got guildies together to queue and re-queue up for regular UK to kill Prince Keleseth; that way we’d all get roses for the Love Fool achievement, and it’s the fastest way to get the drop. (The others that drop them are the Prince in Old Kingdom and the Maiden of Grief in Halls of Stone.) We would run in, kill him, leave the dungeon, reset it, and re-enter. Turns out if you do this 6 or so times in short succession, you lock yourself out of other instances for a while. :smack: We discovered that when some of them tried to enter SFK for the daily boss kill. They were able to enter some time later on.

My guildies also discovered the hard way that it really helps to have two tanks for the boss, since it consists of two alchemists (lvl 82 elites) who have different gas clouds which do a lot of damage, and you can have only one “neutralizer” on at a time. Then later in the fight, a third - who doesn’t keep aggro - runs around hitting people, so you have to make it through that part too. I tanked it for a few runs, and you just have to watch out for the wrong color of gas puddle.

I found out the easiest way for me to do the SFK daily (as a healer) was to use one of the potions before the fight, then when the fight started I would stand in the middle of a puddle of that color and toll heals from there until the ‘wrong’ color was thrown at me. I only had to move once or twice per fight.

The trick to tanking Chillmaw is to watch your debuffs. They appear in the upper right corner of your screen under your buffs. When you see the big yellow happy bomb icons you know there is a bomb ticking with you in range. Just back up when you see that happen. The whole fight once the bombadiers come out you should be kiting the mobs backwards every time they set a bomb. Then you never eat the bomb damage. If you put on Righteous Fury and Consecrate every time you move back you should hold the aggro with no trouble.

There are PvP Quests in WG. There are basically 2 kinds. The main ones you handle during the battles themselves by killing 10 opponents or defending/destroying the seige engines or southern towers or just winning. Like that. There are also gathering quests. Only one of those will be available at a time. You travel to a certain part of WG and collect some items. Be careful when doing those because if you get ganked the enemy can loot the items from your corpse.

The quests used to be daily but they switched em. People call em “weeklies” but it’s more complex than that. Unless they’ve fixed it recently you can run them twice a week. They seem to be on a 5 day timer (120 hours) but they also reset on Tuesday morning along with raid instances. So you can run them on Tuesday afternoon and again on the weekend if you are paying attention. In addition to the cash you get bonus Stone Keeper Shards. Don’t forget that after you get any upgrades from those you can turn em in for honor points. More free gems.

These are brilliant. I’ll have to try them tonight. The best I could think of last night was going into the Sholazar Basin area where the Frenzyheart and Oracle armies are fighting and slaughtering Oracles continuously. I didn’t get a bad rate, but I was still only able to kill 3-6 at a time, it took a while to kill a batch, and it wasn’t risk-free.

In other news, Cyranus my Mage finally hit 60 over the weekend. I’ll definitely be ready to join in the guild run on Wednesday. Skammer, do you know if you guys are planning to do Ramparts again, or will it be Blood Furnace? I’d like to run Ramps at least once, but I can PUG it if the group’s ready to move on.

I’ve been selecting “Random Burning Crusade dungeon” in the dungeonfinder, because it will select something that is level-appropriate for the group and, as a bonus, you get a Useful Item (blue gear item) when you finish.

Ramparts is pretty short, so if we end up doing Blood Furnace and finish in a reasonable amount of time, we could probably queue for Ramps also.

You don’t have to land the killing blow, but you do have to hit the mobs. Which leaves the healers screwed, IMO.

For the Shadowfang alchemists - my first group was having problems, then we had the healer and all the ranged DPS climb on top of the fountain. The green and purple puddles stay on the ground for the most part, and you just have to worry about random hits from adds and stuff. Much less dying all around.

Great thank you.

So riding the back of a Storm Giant and trying to kill Thymn (sp?) in Zul’Drak is not easy, no idea how to heal the big fella I’ll have to look it up.
