The problem with addons that provide dungeon maps, while it’s better than nothing, is that they don’t show your position in the dungeon. Not always necessary, and sometimes you can follow along in your mind, but there are some places like Maraudon that are just horrifically complicated.
Still not “getting” this one. I can hear my sword “hitting”, but as far as keeping those swirling things/skulls off the exorcist, I can’t see where I’m getting anywhere.
Q
any tips on getting around in Undercity? Even with the map I am having trouble getting to where I want to be.
Hmmm…I suspect it’s something that will just get easier with time. If you’re looking for something specific, say a trainer, ask a guard and then the trainer’s position will be marked on the map for you.
It’s finding my way to the marker that is the issue! Just new city syndrome I guess.
Yes it’s tough because it’s on so many levels but they way to think about it is as a central pillar which has the Bank and some vendors then an outside hub (this is not the correct word but close enough) which contains all the trainers and AH. And some vendors. It took me a few levels but now I think it’s well designed, better than Orgrimmar that’s for sure.
I am this close >< to level 78 and some nice gear upgrades I have in the bank. Makes me happy. Zul’Drak is pure joy for a Paladin, I found it very hard to drag myself away from the area just in front of the Argent Stand if I keep Divine Plea up, which is easy, I can live forever and just churn out XP the undead keep coming. I find questing too enjoyable to do it for long mind you.
My characters, all on Azuremyst EU:
Sagan Human Protection\Holy Paladin 77
Noether Gnome Demonology Warlock 54
Germain Draenei Discipline Priest 21
Tcharles Gnome Mage 11
Tcheska Undead Discipline Priest 13
Though I’d rather play Horde the great guild I have discovered is Alliance so I have switched allegiance. Yes I know boo. Still my minor RP storyline of me taking down the Alliance from within to prove myself to my lady Sylvanas makes it Ok….
Question – Wintergrasp a bad idea pre level 80 or will I be able to survive? I want to try it out but I don’t want to spend most of my time as a corpse. Really I just want to wear this wonderful looking helm for a good reason Ornate Saronite Skullshield
Yep. To expand on this - when you enter the inhabited part of Undercity (down the elevators), there’s the upper ring, which has the flight master and a bunch of vendors. Go down a “half” level and there’s the bank, plus the guild area on one side and the cooking trainer on the other. Go down to the lower level and you have ramps to the outer rings. The innermost ring is just a pathway with the AH vendors. The middle ring has profession trainers, and then separated from it with a green moat, the outermost ring has a couple of profession trainers and the class trainers, plus the way to Sylvanas’ chambers. Most of what you’re looking for in UC will be in the outer rings on the lowest level.
Went over to Shatt last night, and I’m doing some quests in Nagrand.
Also, I used the “find dungeon group” box for the first time and grouped with some very nice players.
Offered DPS, explained about the mental challenging, and was able to hold my own for the most part.
Am I right, that my ranged weapon is useless in a case like this (dungeon raid), and I’m expected to just hack and slash?
Thanks
Q
Pretty much. Normally the tank will pull, or a hunter might (since they can use a skill called Misdirect to point the mad bad guys at someone, like the tank). If your ranged weapon has any bonuses on it like strength or whatever, you’ll still get those bonuses for having the weapon equipped, but I would expect to just slash away.
There are two types of DPS - melee and ranged. To put it very simply, if you cast spells or use a gun/bow/wand, then that’s ranged. If you get up close and personal with the mobs, then you’re melee.
So a feral druid is melee, but a balance druid is ranged.
What class are you? If you are a ranged class/spec, then you should definitely be using your ranged weapon to maximise your DPS and therefore your contribution to the party in the dungeon.
Quasi’s playing a warrior IIRC.
Quasi, you’re correct. As warrior DPS you’re basically expected to wade in and hack away, with the following caveats:
(1) You don’t want to wade in and start swinging until the tank has gathered the aggro on the current group of mobs. You want the monsters to be hitting the tank, so the healer has an easier time.
(2) If you can, try to target the same specific target that the tank is hitting. That’ll make it less likely that the mobs will lose aggro on the tank, and start targeting you instead. Plus, it means you can burn down one of the mobs faster than if everyone’s attacking a different taret. I freely admit that picking out the tank’s target can be hard to do in many instance battles, with multiple characters and mobs flailing away, spell effects and special abilities going off, etc. With the more complex battles, the party leader will often mark the targets in priority order (skull, then red ‘x’ is the standard priority order), and you should focus on those targets first. However, it’s been my experience that most of the time when fighting ‘trash’ instance mobs, parties don’t usually bother with using the raid markers.
There is an /assist command (don’t know if it’s actually /assist or something else, since I almost never group) that makes you target the target of your focus. That’s all getting a little too intricate for Quasi, though, I think. (No offense, buddy!) Hell, I never managed to get it right the few times I’ve tried it, and I don’t have short-term memory problems.
First off, jayjay and everyone: Y’all can drop the “no offense” disclaimer. It’s not necessary and as I have come to terms with what’s going on with me, I hope y’all can do the same.
Secondly, I think I may have just “lucked up” last night and found a real tolerant dungeon group, because they basically just let me run in and hack and slash until some of them finished and went deeper and I didn’t notice and so had to fight by myself.
One of them rezzed me, but by then most had left (one had been “kicked”?), so instead of waiting for more to join, we decided to disband. I thanked them and went on back to Nagrand
Thanks

Mostly ran around on my baby pally over the weekend, finally hitting 40 so he can (1) dual spec to prot and stop tanking with a ret build and (2) equip the two plate BoAs (and the nice helm from RFD) that he’s been carrying around. Stil a loooong way to catch up with the weekly alt instance group =).
Shakes fist
On Friday night, I ran an experiment to see how many random heroic dungeons I could do before getting put in ICC or ToC group. I had to stop and go to bed after 11, so the world will never know.
Last night, I did my first random for the Frost badges and then purposefully queued for PoS (there are upgrades in there for me, dammit!). I got in and had a good run, and one of my upgrades dropped (the cloth belt from Ick) but I lost the roll to the warlock.
I also did all the holiday quests on my main and my lock yesterday. I have to say I hate the Lovely Charm mechanism – it seems they only drop when you land a killing blow. As a healer, I went through three heroics without getting any; then finally in AN I used Holy Nova to kill a bunch of those little spider adds on the first boss and got 15 Charms at once. Still I’ll have to find a better way to get these.
Do the Argent Tournament quest where you joust baddies around the base of the citadel. You know those footmen or whatever where the quest giver pretty much tells you “don’t worry about those, just run them over?” Yeah. Those drop charms and apparently do so in impressive quantities. My husband went to do the quest and kept running over the lowbie opponents long after he’d gotten enough, ended up with enough charms for 6 bracelets without much time put in.
On that note, does anyone else imagine the leaders humoring us when they get the charm bracelets? I suspect Thrall chucks it over his shoulder the minute you turn around, into a big pile behind his throne.
As a fellow healer, I feel your pain!
I ended up going to Storm Peaks to the expanse of ‘ice’ before Dun Nifflem (that’s not how it’s spelt but it’s how I say it in my brain). There are packs of mammoths that run around so I went AoE crazy and got heaps of charms.
Tonight my husband and I are going to venture into Ulduar just to clear the mobs before Flame Leviathan as apparently they have a 100% drop rate on the charms. Even if it’s not 100%, there are so many of them that I’m sure to get a good haul.
Yeah, I read that you can go into Ulduar and hop on a vehicle and slay hundreds of dwarves (?) and rack up hundreds of charms pretty quickly. You have to be in a raid group, though. Ulduar is the only Northrend raid I’ve never been in, though, so I don’t know if I could go in cold and know what to do.
All you need is two people in a party to form a raid. Just go into the last tab of your Social screen (I forget what it’s called, party? raid?) and click the ‘Convert to raid’ button. Voila, insta-raid.
You could definitely go into it cold if you just want to farm charms. There’s a big square with vehicles around the outside when you go in. You talk to the guy to start it off (I forget his name, but just mouse over the NPCs and he’ll have the ‘speech’ bubble), then hop in a vehicle and play with the buttons.
There are three different types of vehicles:
- siege engines (Tank)
- demolishers (ranged)
- choppers (AoE)
I’m going to try a siege engine. Ramming the little guys is fun times.
