You can definitely get quests in both Borean and Howling Fjord at 68. I just did it about a week ago when I moved my DK to Northrend at just a couple of clicks past 68. Now, I don’t know how much harder it would be to do those quests at 68 without the overpower of a Death Knight, but you can certainly try.
Thanks, jayjay. I’m parked in the inn at Northrend, after having to take another boat because, according to the captain of the Assurance, his boat couldn’t sail because it was "infested with bugs!
Did all the “report to’s” and am ready to take on the sand crawlers later today.
Looking forward to some better “drops”
Thanks
Q
So I ran my Shadow Priest a great deal over the weekend, and have discovered a couple things:
1 - I love playing SPriest, both questing and DPSing. I broke down and spent a couple talent points buying up the vampiric healing ability, and now I can fight an arbitrary number of at-level mobs as long as I have dots ticking down on all of them.
2 - I really don’t like healing instances, at least early Northrend instances. I ran into a couple wipes in AN then got booted by the party because I got killed by a skirmisher on the first boss (boggle), then ran through the Nexus with more success, but I was just not having fun with it, especially compared to my happy-fun ranged DPS instance runs. Kahmu/Reinsgard (I forget his Dope name) mentioned that he’d hated healing Northrend instances in the low 70s; I guess I might try my healing spec out again when I hit 80.
wanted a break from lvling my tank, so i started off a troll hunter. I’ve got him up to level 12 and have a pet raptor. I have a few questions
for DPS purposes, which is best between beast mastery, marksmanship & survival.
I picked up a lvl 8 raptor when I hit level 10. I have now moved into the barrens and there are bigger raptors. Should I trade up my pet even though he has now levelled up to 12 with me?
As I understand it, different species have slightly different powers, but aside from appearance, all raptors are the same (and all cats are the same, all pigs are the same, etc).
Survival currently tops the DPS< but Marksmanship is close (and since Survival is best at Area-damage, Marks is more or less just as good for things liike bosses.)
However, I recommend you stay with Beast Mastery for now. This is far and away the toughest build, and you can basically survive anything as long as your pet stays alive. It’s almost universally considered the best spec for levelling up. Plus, it’s just plain fun. You have a powerful pet to protect you and they are even more fun now than ever before.
There are no stupid quyestion, but there are wrong questions. The right question is, “Do I want this raptor or that one?” it’s totally up to you because the raptor will quickly catch up to you in levels. So don’t worry much and just do what’s fun with it. Don’t be afraid to grab and try out new pets. Ultimately, pick one you think it cute and has good abilities for whatever your doing. Heck, you can even grab a pet which is pretty low level now, since it will instantly be brought up to 4 levels below you if it was lower.
http://www.wow-petopia.com/ is my favorite pet resource. Take a look-see through. For levelling, most people suggest pets like crabs, bears, boars, wolves, cats or raptors. All are good choices.
HA! Excellent name Q.
As has been said, we’re Horde but with a dormant sister guild in the Alliance. join us…
I’ve just leveled my fourth horde toon past the mid-30’s and never did the Barrens with any of them aside from a few quests. In fact the one toon I did try leveling in the Barrens I abandoned at 26 (my hunter). I much prefer doing Ghostlands or Silverpine Forest, then Hillsbrad.
I had a lot of playing time this weekend so I got my baby pally from 31 to 39, questing in Hillbrad in between instance runs (mostly SM). Most of the groups went fine and I got a lot of compliments on my healing, but I had three tanks I wanted to strangle:
-
We zone into SM graveyard, and I’m still buffing folks when the tank runs ahead and starts pulling the first hallway. Well, ok, dps is taking them down and we’re doing ok. Before they fall, the tank runs into the first room, gathers all the mobs (about a dozen), and LEAVES THE PARTY. Needless to say we wipe, and have to choose between waiting for a new tank, or waiting out our 15 minute debuff and requeueing. If I had caught his name I would have reported him for griefing.
-
Another time we’re in RFK with worst. pally tank. ever. He kept forgetting Righteous Fury so would lose aggro. He ignored requests to buff people so we only had mine. He ignored my suggestion to switch auras (we both had Devo at first; finaly I switched to Ret because he wouldn’t). Didn’t use Reckoning to pull; just pulled with his face. I kept putting up with him despite two wipes because we were getting close to the end but the final straw was after a fight I said “mana” and sat down to drink, and he ran and pulled the next group of mobs. So I let him die (didn’t have a choice, really, with no mana) and then quit the group.
-
Tank fail #3: we’re doing SM Cath and we get to the chapel, clear about 80% of it, and everything is going great. Then the tank dings 40 and just leaves. Jerk. At least he waited until we were out of combat though.
And on my main, I finally took down that new boss (Toravan?) in VoA25. We don’t control WG very often on our server, so it’s only the second time I’ve fought that boss. Only one other priest but she outrolled me on the very nice PvE priest gloves that dropped.
The Black War Mammoth also dropped from the flame boss (lost that roll) but I did come away with a PvP belt, at least. Not that I really ever PvP.
Ok, I created a Tauren Druid named “Legendairy”… LOL!
He’s up to either lvl 6 or 7 so far…didn’t have a lot of time to play this weekend.
Hopefully I’ll get him higher this coming week.
I have a very neglected Rogue on a server where I don’t know anybody else for when I want to just fuck around on my own and be antisocial. I am leveling her as Subtlety. Holy hell, it’s fun.
:smack::smack::smack: You’re such a dork.
<3
Yup, BDL is Horde, but a lot of us have our mains elsewhere (or alts on other servers), and a lot of those are Alliance. I have a 40-something Troll Hunter in BDL, but my main is a Night Elf Warrior on Stormrage, my other 80 is an Undead Mage on Eldre’Thalas, and I have other alts spread among a few servers and both factions.
**GRATS **on 68 and getting to Northrend! Say goodbye to the clownsuits: Northrend gear is pretty homogenized, which makes it a bit boring but very easy on the eyes. ![]()
See what I mean? You look reasonably badass again. Foes are now likely to take a second thought before attacking instead of falling down laughing. ![]()
Yup, those are your two starting zones. Personally, I liked starting in Howling Fjord as Alliance.
On single-target DPS, I believe that MM is currently the highest. By any metric, BM is the lowest, but it still does respectable damage, and it’s a great spec for soloing because of how much stronger it makes your pet.
Quite a while back now, different animals actually had different abilities. (You even had to tame various ones to learn new skills to teach your pet, and some named animals even had unique characteristics, like attacking faster.) But that’s all gone now: all pets of a given type (e.g., all Raptors) will be exactly identical, other than their appearance.
As for size: When you tame a Beast, it will shrink. IIRC, its size *will *be proportionate to its level, so your Raptor will eventually be bigger at 80 than it is right now at 12. But I don’t think most pets will ever get as large as their wild counterparts. (This is to make them easier to deal with in a party, or especially a raid.) AFAIK, all pets of a type (e.g., all Raptors) will scale the same way, so if you tame that new raptor, it will shrink down to the same size as your current one. This should at least be true for anything with the same model, even if it has a different skin.
1.) Waiting for a new tank in an existing instance will always be faster than queuing for a new instance. As far as I can tell, in-progress groups get first priority for tanks. You can always requeue, then port out to do a couple of quests or run some errands while you wait.
2.) This is why a damage meter is nice–it will record people’s names for you. If you don’t have one, you can try scrolling back through your combat log to find the name, too.
I can’t decide whom I hate more: the body-pullers or the taunt-pullers.
:smack: I do have a damage meter. I wish I had thought of that!
Speaking of meters, I was kind of proud of myself in that VoA25 raid for topping out the healing meters – usually that goes to a druid or pally, but I out-healed the druid, shaman, and other two priests but still ranked fourth in over-healing. Yay me! Recount also reports healing (or dps) / gearscore, and I topped that too so it wasn’t just that I overgeared the other healers, which I didn’t. I just needed to brag
Ok, some more time has gone by and I want to do another head count…
How many different Dopers have a level 80 Horde character on Cairne?
What if we start scheduling (in April) Monday nights at 10pm Eastern (7pm Pacific) to start doing 10-man raids? Even if we have 8 or 9 players start, we should be able to get through Naxxramas, right? Even if some players have a brand spanking new 80, all the more reason to get in there with us to improve their gear.
Does Monday Nights seem to be optimal for everyone? We could get a better consensus if we all take a copy of this list below and add your doper name, Character(s) name and best night(s) you are willing to play and the time zone you are in:

Not everyone in this thread is in BDL, and not everyone in BDL reads this thread. I’d suggest either starting a new thread in this forum, and/or starting one on the guild messageboard (which is woefully underused). I just don’t want to create resentment by hijacking the thread to work out guild schedules here (as opposed to guild announcements, like I do all the time).
That said, Mondays work for me although 9pm server (CT) is a little late unless we are good about starting right away.
Post deleted.
Sorry Yeti, I just re-read my last post and it sounds harsh; I didn’t mean it to be. I love the idea and I hope we can get it done!
I like cats and turtles.
I didn’t get too much done in-game this weekend, as I worked a Noon - 8:00PM shift on Saturday. I was very glad somebody in Trade chat mentioned Daylight Savings Time, because nobody else had mentioned it to me and the earlier start date for it caught me by surprise. I ended up having a great deal of difficulty falling asleep, despite being dead-tired, finally dropping off at around 2:15AM. And then, for unknown reasons, I woke up at about 5:15AM. I laid there for an hour trying to go back to sleep, but it became apparent there wasn’t going to be any more sleep for me and so I went ahead and got out of bed. I ended up going all day Sunday without any more sleep. I think I may have dozed off briefly in church, but attempts to nap later in the day were unsuccessful. Because of my tiredness I didn’t attempt anything too strenuous in-game. But at least I had the comfort of knowing that, tired as I was, I should have no trouble getting to sleep at a reasonable hour Sunday night. Right? Right? I went to bed at midnight, read Pratchett for about an hour (I’m up to Monstrous Regiment), then turned out my light to go to sleep. Tried, anyway. I arrived once more at 2:00AM, still showing no signs of falling asleep. Cursing to myself, I got out of bed, popped a sleeping pill (I generally hate taking sleeping pills that late, because I’ll end up sleeping way later than I want to and half of my day off is gone before I get out of bed), then logged onto my main and farmed Eternals until the pill finally kicked in around 3:00AM.
That said, I did get a little bit done. I’m still doing Argent Tourney dailies on my main, now saving up Champion’s Seals to buy various mounts so I could get to 50. I was sitting at 46 mounts, having purchased every ground mount available from all five Alliance factions, plus my bear, my turtle, my Argent Charger, my Swift Gray Steed, the small mammoth from the SoH, Green Protodrake, Red Drake, a couple flying carpets … then I slapped my forehead and said “D’OH!” as I realized I’d only ever purchased a Snowy Gryphon and a Swift Red Gryphon when I learned flying and swift flying, respectively. So I talked to Mei Francis and purchased an Ebon Gryphon and the three remaining Swift gryphons, and then went to the mailbox and collected my Albino Drake mount ![]()
On the Horde side, say hello to the two newest BDL members, Flambé, my troll fire mage, and Hexpot, my blood elf warlock! It turns out I wasn’t as clever and original as I thought when I named my mage Flambé — there are 40 more Flambés on the Armory, the vast majority of them mages. There are also two other Hexpots on the Armory, but if you ask me the other two don’t make any sense, assuming they were both, like me, making a pun on “sexpot”. One of these toons is at least a warlock, so the “hex” makes sense, but the toon is a male orc; the other Hexpot is a male night elf hunter, and so the pun (if that’s what was intended) makes no sense at all, since hunters don’t deal in hexes and I’ve always been under the impression that the term “sexpot” is reserved for females. I don’t think I’ve ever heard of a guy being called a sexpot.
TLTETA (Too Late To Edit To Add): Okay, just checked an online dictionary and it defines “sexpot” as simply, “a sexy person”. I’ve still never heard it applied to a male.
ETA (sigh): Okay, found this at dictionary.com":
“a sexually attractive person.”
Then, under “Word Origin & History”, I find:
“erotically willing and desirable female,” 1929, from sex + pot, perhaps suggested by fleshpot.
“A woman considered to have sex appeal.”
You didn’t come off harsh…it was a great idea. No issues here.
Hey! I’m in Wrath! Didn’t even notice till I just now signed in! Maybe things will go a little faster now?
Thanks
Q
Good luck in Northrend Quasi! Did you decide to start with Howling Fjord or Borean Tundra?
Also, can someone not behind a conent filter confirm for me if the minimum level for doing the Caverns of Time: Escape from Durnholde Keep is 66 or not?
If 66 is the minimum, the BDL dungeon run this week will be random. I haven’t quite hit 66 yet.
