Hmm. I’m looking to transfer my troll hunter, Jabloo, over to Cairne, so I thought I’d do an Armory search on the name to see if I would need to change his name (in the event there was already a Jabloo on Cairne).
Want to talk about coincidences? There are a total of five Jabloos on the Armory, including mine. Three of those five are trolls, and all three of these are hunters. And all three troll hunters named Jabloo are in the same battlegroup, Retaliation. Weird.
Synchronicity is weird, innit? I bet you if the Armory showed characters under level 10, you’d get a much more varied list.
I think there’s a combination of a few different factors: Jabloo is a Trollish name, Trolls often play Hunters, and people don’t usually stick with a character they don’t feel comfortable with (I haven’t named a single character Bosstone yet, since it’s just not a ‘proper’ name for anyone). So Jabloo the Troll Hunter works for at least a few people.
You wanna talk about synchronicity, though…I just looked at all the Nahrens on the Armory. There are 82 total Nahrens over level 10 and 77 of them are Tauren! 32 are Druids, but that’s to be expected; at least half the Tauren population are Druids.
I actually have an explanation for that, though: The Tauren Name Generator. It’s what I used to come up with a name for my Tauren, and I wouldn’t be at all surprised if most of those 82 players also used it.
There’s a definite racial tendency in the in-game random name generator. My troll priest is Suweerti, and I’ve seen a Suweer (troll) on the same server, as well as plenty of Suweerti trolls on the Armory. My husband’s troll hunter is Ishidu, and he’s waved hello over the course of a few years to a troll named Ishii, etc.
Wahoo! I decided to fire up the Random Battleground Finder, which demonstrated the same repetitiveness as the RDF by choosing for me EoE, SotA, and EoE again, but that was good because those two battlegrounds were the only two I still needed to serve Great Feasts in, and now my main toon carries the same title I do in real life:
Oh, and a couple EoE wins (the first win was actually the first time I’ve been on the winning team in a BG) garnered me enough Honor Points to bump my total high enough to upgrade my PvP cloak from the crafted Frostguard Drape that I made myself, to the Relentless Gladiator’s Cloak of Triumph.
Had one little bit of weirdness in EoE. While mainly playing “defense” of captured objectives, three or four different times I got sapped while standing there … and that was it. No Horde players anywhere in sight, just some stealthed rogue sneaking up and sapping me and then sneaking away without attacking, and no nearby Horde to follow up on it. I wonder if it was perhaps some very poorly-geared rogue who was doing that just to avoid the appearance of AFK Honor-leeching.
Anyway, EoE was kind of fun. Alliance won the first one fairly quickly, but the second one went on and on and on before we finally won it (and just barely won it - the Horde was only 10-20 points behind us when we won). I wonder if it would have gone quicker if the “serious” BGers had spent more time fighting and less time bitching in chat about how much everybody else on the team sucked
SotA … I had no idea what the hell I was supposed to be doing there. Alliance was on defense, but the whole thing was pretty much over before I could even figure out how to get to where I needed to be.
Yeah, I used the random name generator for Jabloo. I made up my main’s name, Eilyssana, out of my head though (the first syllable inspired by my grandmother’s name, Eileen), and after 15 months she’s still the only Eilyssana on the Armory. Interestingly, though, I used the generator for Keliraeda’s name, and after many months she’s also the only Keliraeda on the Armory.
Definitely. I was fishing in Org one day on one of my non-Keliraeda toons, and found myself standing next to a female belf named something like Keriraeda (don’t remember the name exactly, but it was only one or two letters off from Keliraeda).
Speaking of Org, I was getting ready to log out for the night, very late last night, like 4AM Cairne server time. All I needed to do was have Chimtahna post all the crap Keliraeda sent him on the AH. Bad timing, though, because Chimtahna logged in right in the middle of an Alliance raid. Though I don’t know what was up with these raiders; they’d apparently already killed Thrall, but instead of moving on to the next capital they decided to camp in the vicinity of the bank and AH, amusing themselves killing bankers and auctioneers over and over. I grumbled a bit, and decided to take the zep to UC and do my business there. Once I finished up with that, I logged out Chimtahna, and then out of curiosity I logged in my troll DK, who is parked in Org, and saw that these “raiders” were still at it
I finally got around to changing factions from alliance to horde on my other 80 druid. This one is a tank/cat dual spec (which I’d argue matches well with my Boomkin/Resto druid). I had never run any of the northrend dungeons except for Gundrak as a tank before, so i’m working on running those regularly right now to gear up for heroics and learn my rotations. So far, no deaths on my watch, all smooth fast runs. Of course, all of them have intentionally been the “easier” dungeons so far (azjol-nerub, violet hold, DTK), but still I’m enjoying this.
I went from level 50 to level 54 yesterday. I quested to 51 normally, and then I wanted to try AV. I ran AV quite a few times once I realized that winning there gives huge exp. I remember hating the 50s on my priest, so I’ve decided to run AV until 58, when I can get into Outland.
AV is still as confusing as ever, but at least the battles were interesting. There’s something about fighting in a huge mass of players. I think when the battles get that big, ranged classes do better, because us melee have to actually chase down and find out where the enemy is in the crowd.
I also got the “That Takes Class” achievement. AV seems to be split evenly between paladins and death knights in the 50s bracket, with only a few of the rest of the classes. I haven’t been yanked by a death knight yet though :).
I was pleasantly surprised on Saturday when the server transfer of my troll hunter, Jabloo, went through less than four hours after I initiated it, rather than the “up to 5 days” Blizzard said.
Also, has anybody else noticed that hunters are now depicted on the character selection screen holding their bow or gun instead of their melee weapons? About time!
Quasi- Wolkie is looking pretty bad-ass in those pics!
I’m picking up my mage (Dropstitch) again because, well, despite having gotten to level 75, I’m just not having that much fun playing my rogue at the moment; I built her to be stealth, but I’m learning that at high level, if you want to do -any- instances or raids or stuff… Ya kinda gotta go combat, which I dislike. I -like- being sneaky!
I had a very productive time on Friday evening which ties to our discussion of emblems. I logged in with 0 Frost Emblems, because I had just bought the priest gloves earlier in the week. As I was getting the fishing daily out of the way (love that Disarmed has been moved to VH) someone was looking for a healer for the weekly raid quest, so I joined up. I’ve only done one weekly since they were introduced and I’d never done Ulduar before, but I thought it would be okay and it was - we took down the first two bosses for the 5 Frosts and I even picked up an achievement or two.
Just as we were finishing up, I got invited on an ICC10 raid with a group I had pugged with the previous week. We took down the first four bosses (up to Saurfang), each of which dropped two Frosts (and I got the caster necklace from Saurfang). Also, before the ship battle, we got the “Securing the Ramparts” quest to fight the Rotting Frost Giant, which gave us an additional 5 Frosts. When we were done, I ran a quick random heroic (UK).
So when I logged out for the night: 20 Emblems of Frost! Not bad for one night’s work.
Looking forward to the BDL raid tonight (if there is room; I can sit out if needed). Wednesday night’s dungeon run will be Sethekk Halls.
May I just note that, since I became an Orgrimmar valiant…
I FUCKING HATE JOUSTING!!! OMFG!
I canNOT make it work. The only reason I got my 3 badges for Grand Melee the other night was because of a helpful Belf hunter who (without my asking) shot my opponents’ health down while I was jousting them. When I tried it last night by myself I can’t even defeat one!
We’ve talked about this before, but anyway, there are a couple relatively sure-fire techniques:
1 - the slow and boring way (which I think (on preview) is Ferret Herder’s technique):
Get yourself up to 3 shields before starting, and keep close to your opponent, spamming “1”. Every so often, your opponent will turn around and run away from you. Spam “1” and “2”, and as soon as your shield breaker (2) goes off, run towards your opponent so you’re too close for him to use any special attacks on you when he turns around. Hit “4” every so often to refresh your shields.
This way, you’ll almost always have 3 shields up, while your opponent will have between 2 and 3 shields; you’ll end up wearing him down.
2 - The somewhat faster way:
Again, 3 shields. After you talk to your opponent, spam “1” and “3” (charge). He should walk just far enough away for you to charge him at the start of the fight. Then turn around towards him, spamming “1” and “2”, and run up close. Hit “4” if you’re down any shields, otherwise just keep spamming “1” and “3”, and once he runs away and you charge, switch to spamming “1” and “2” as you turn around back towards him.
Some danger here of getting lost/disoriented and taking a lot of hits from your opponent, but once you get into the groove of it, it’s pretty easy to keep him consistently down around 0-1 shield while you have 2-3, and you’ll generally rip through him in a hurry. I’ve gotten through 4 opponents in 3 minutes using more or less this technique.
Thanks to both of you. I’ll try those tactics tonight. I did vaguely remember that we had discussed jousting before, but I wasn’t at a level to do Tournament at the time and I pretty much skipped that section of the thread when it was new.
ETA: It’s also obvious that I need to work on using the upper number row for my attacks. Mouse-clicking is NOT working on this set of skills.
Generally speaking, the mouse is best used for movement and navigating menus/windows while button presses are best used for actions. Trying to use one for the other purpose results in massive slowdown, which isn’t typically a problem when you’re just in a city doing tradeskill stuff or whatever, but really shows its problems in combat.
Yes, it’s entirely possible that the higher-tier 5-mans drops emblems, as all their bosses drop epic gear, too. So that would be ToC5 and the ICC5s.
He’s just a signature on your charter–after all, you paid him, so you might as well get the benefit of having the jerk take up a slot. Then, once the guild is complete, you can kick him. The fact that he’s still on the charter, though, means he’s probably not a jerk so much as just young.
P.S. If you didn’t know yet, it takes mail an hour to travel between characters that aren’t on the same account. If you send things between your own alts, it arrives immediately, but anybody else has to wait.
Yup, it goes *damn *fast. If you really sit down and grind Heroics (goes faster if you can find a tank to run with for insta-queues), you can get a piece or more a day. As far as Frost gear–you may want to consider whether you’d rather have the gear or use your Frost badges to buy Primordial Saronite, which you can then sell. (Or use to buy Ashen Verdict recipes, once your AV rep gets high enough.)
I know the Prot Warrior T10 set bonuses are pretty damn sexy; dunno about other classes or specs. What you should keep in mind, though, is that the T10 gear you can buy with Frost badges is the 10.0. The shoulders you have now are the same level as the 10.33 ones, which you need a token to upgrade to–and tokens only drop off of wing-end bosses in ICC25. So if you want to start buying pieces of T10, I’d suggest saving the shoulders for later.
Hot damn, it all matches! And looks dangerous to boot.
I’m not even sure you need the Alt in there–by default, I think it’s just “z.”
I’m a language nerd, so I probably could have guessed. However, the album is exactly 57 days older than me, so I never had the opportunity.
Hrmmm. If you were on offense, I’d have guessed it was someone just passing through who stopped to take you out of the action on their way somewhere else. But since you were camping an area on defense, heck if I know. Could indeed be someone trying to avoid being marked AFK.
Yeah, these days, the transfers go through lightning-quick. Very nice to not be locked out for a couple of days.
The fastest way to joust is the one you’ve discovered–have a friend (or friends) on the ground nuke the target at the same time you’re attacking. However, here’s the general strategy I use, which works well for me. (I can’t remember the last time an NPC of any level beat me.)
1.) Stack shields to full.
2.) Initiate combat with an NPC.
3.) Immediately start mashing the melee attack (1) as they ride past you to the center. This should get you a free hit.
4.) Mash charge (3) as they ride to the center of the ring. If they never get far enough away to charge, close the distance.
5.) Mash melee (1) while you stand on top of the enemy jouster. Don’t move.
6.) When the enemy turns to gain distance, hold your position while mashing charge (3).
7.) While wheeling around after your charge, mash shield-breaker (2) as you ride back to close the distance. Get one off if you can, but don’t try to stay at range to get one off if you can’t.
8.) When back in melee range, go back to #5 and repeat until the jouster is defeated.
9.) During all this, keep an eye on your shields. When you lose a charge, or when you have ~10 to 20 seconds left on a full charge, hit your shield (4).
Because I’m a nerd, I made a flowchart. I didn’t include an “Is the enemy dead?” box 'cause I figure y’all can make that connection on your own.
Any tips on keeping them in the jousting circle? I have a heck of a time of it, they keep running further and further away. I tried positioning myself on different sides of them but they seems to run off in different random directions. A few times we get so far it cancels combat, but I hate to give them the space they need for a charge or shield breaker.
I do the slow-and-steady-and boring method, so while we’re just head to head and smacking the “1” option (regular hit), I slowly back up to position us better in the ring.
