Yes, in fact you should make sure that Battle Shout is always up.
Hm, missed that yesterday. No, daily quests give you XP every time you do them, it’s just that when you do them at level 80 that XP gets converted into gold.
Hi Quasi - you don’t have to be an officer to recruit as I can recruit for my guild and I’m only rank 3.
Grats to all that deserve it. And those that don’t I guess.
My Pally is slowly getting geared up and I now have half the Heroic dungeons memorised so that runs are easier and I know when and where the damage spikes are. Waiting for another T-9 piece before I start on the other (harder) half of the heroic dungeons, hopefully sometime next week. It’s damned expensive keeping your gems and enchants up, mining saronite just not worth the effort (going for 13G a stack on my server) so I’m going to have to work out another gold source, honour points for epic gems OK but I can’t always do wg.
Also ran Zul’Gurub with some guildys, my first Raid experience even though we only had 6 of us and we’re all 80s. Still managed to wipe which was impressive, I got d/c (I was in my tanking in my off spec) while fighting one the bosses and reconnected to find everyone doing corpse runs. Quite an epic experience though and lot’s of character in there.
The catch there being that armor doesn’t help against elemental damage anyway, and the Slag death explosion is Fire. 30,000 or 0 armor, it’ll still hit you for the same amount, the protective stat against that is Fire Resistance instead.
This segues into the point that armor is not something to be concerned about for DPS. The only thing it protects against are physical damage attacks, and not even 100% of those. If the enemy is actively attacking you, armor will help you. If you’re standing in front of the enemy and it hits you with a Cleave, armor will help you. Virtually anything else? No help at all. To make matters worse, all the really beefy enemies have attacks that are so strong that it doesn’t even matter how much armor you have if you’re short of tank level. A warrior in full plate getting hit by a cleaving paw swipe from a huge dragon is going to go down in a single blow just like the rogue in leather will. In fact, the rogue can survive it better, thanks to his Feint ability and high dodge rate. A caster shaman with his mail armor and shield is much, much easier to melee to death than a mage in pajamas, despite having four times the armor value.
Armor’s scaled entirely around tanking, and everyone else can pretty much ignore it.
Depends on how the guild is set up, I think. When looking at the panel that lets you assign rank names and so on, there are options to let that rank bring people into the guild, take a certain number of things out of the guild bank per day, use money from the guild bank, etc.
I’ve run HoL so many times, the trash mobs greet me by name. Seriously, the RDF puts me in there at least twice a week, and there was one span about six weeks ago when 10 of 12 runs in a row were HoL. So if anyone, anywhere has any questions about HoL, let me know. (As a counterpoint, the RDF has only put me in HoR once and HoS twice, and the second time was yesterday).
Anyway, as others have said, those guys esplode when they die, so you have to stand back. I usually try to keep the tank and melee Power Word: Shielded as much as possible during that fight.
Thanks for this, Daedelus. Looks like in fact purple gems are worth it if you get at least +5 spellpower from matching the slot. (And for an obsessive-compulsive like me who just likes to get all his gems in the right colors, I’m at least not hurting myself too much.)
People don’t tend to like it when you spam big guild recruitment messages, so I would go with something small, similar to this:
<Slightly Demented> is recruiting! We’re a friendly guild where low levels and new players can find quest and leveling help as well as fun folks to share your adventures with! Whisper (names) for an invite!
Also, to avoid having to type your message over again, go to your Macros page (hit Escape, then click Macros. Click New, pick an icon and type a short name (like “Rec” for Recruiting). Then, in the little text box, type:
/<number of channel, such as Trade or Guild Recruitment> <your message>
For example, if Trade was 2:
/2 <Slightly Demented> is recruiting! (etc.)
Don’t close the macro window yet.
Drag the icon in the macro window to your bar, and then click **Close **on the Macro window. (I think it says Close. It might say Apply. Just don’t click Cancel).
Now, every time you click the icon on your bar, you’ll broadcast your message to the channel you picked. If you want to do more than one channel, you’ll need more than one macro.
Hope this helps!
Here’s my problem. Scenario: SD and TfB proc at the same time. If you Execute first, that can potentially proc another SD. However, if you Overpower first, another SD proc will just refresh the first one. So, off of that simultaneous proc, you could potentially do an Ex > Ex > Ov, but never an Ov > Ex > Ex.
It’s possible that my priority list is outdated with the current gear–this is something I learned from a great DPS Warrior I used to know, and AFAIK it was at that point the accepted highest-DPS rotation for Arms. Do you have any theorycrafting to back up your new rotation? (Hard numbers, an EJ thread, etc.)
Don’t forget that you can rotate your camera. It’s entirely possible to have it pointed so that instead of having the camera behind you, the camera is facing you, so you can get a better view of the tank.
Future reference (and I’m pretty sure I’ve linked this here before), there was a WoW Insider post months ago that had a video of how to find the five-man entrance. Bookmark that, and you’ll be able to refer anyone in your future groups who’s lost.
Just make sure you don’t get any of them on you–don’t hit anything when you run through, and don’t heal if you can help it. Since you’re a Paladin, you can put up Fire Resistance Aura, which should help the group, since I think those guys do fire damage. Don’t forget that you can also help top yourself and other group members off–a Ret Paladin’s healing spells won’t have a lot of oomph, but they’re better than nothing, which is what a lot of other DPS classes have.
All random rewards are based off of completion, and they do not factor in what you’ve started. So, the reward you get for completing your first random dungeon of the day is identical, regardless of whether you entered at the beginning of the run as your first of the day, or it was your fifth dungeon with none of the others completed, or you’d come in just for the last boss.
Yes, you definitely don’t want to mention anything in your guild bank–that will bring in people who just want to grab ‘n’ go. I’d say something like…
<slightly demented> is recruiting! We’re a casual guild focused on helping each other level. If you’re looking for a friendly, low-key environment, whisper me to find out more or get an invitation.
Guild permissions are very flexible–anyone can do just about anything, as long as you (the GM) set it that way. You could even give lower-ranked members abilities that higher-ranked ones don’t have.
You can only do a daily once per day–hence the name.
I meant that you could only get XP the first time you do the quest, period. It looks like someone else said that you do get XP for doing it repeatedly, though, so that may have changed.
Honestly, the raid leader failed at ensuring that everyone was aware of loot rules at the start and abiding by them. Giving up the neck avoids drama for now, but if that issue isn’t nipped in the bud, then who’s to say that it won’t happen in the future? One piece of loot rarely (by which I mean never) makes or breaks a raid as a whole. It just doesn’t happen.
The only question I have for you, however, is whether the DK was a main or an alt (like your paladin). I feel that alts really should have lower priority than mains, if and only if you are in the same guild and are doing progression content together. For instance, if this DK tanks for your regular 25-man raids, then I think it is incumbent upon you to pass him an upgrade. However, knowing where you are at in progression, I highly doubt that this DK does tank for your main raids, as if he seriously needed an upgrade from ICC-10 normal and was tanking 25-man Heroics, then I’d be impressed. And saddened. I just wanted to put this caveat out there, as I do think it’s an important distinction.
Regardless, I think the fail was on the part of the raid leader, who should have made loot rules clear, and if there were any items that were in some way “reserved,” should have made that clear to all the raid members prior to the first pull. Sorry to hear about the situation; loot drama is definitely the worst kind of drama. To give you an example from my guild, we currently farm ToGC 25 Heroic for the ridiculously amazing trinkets that drop from there. A few weeks back, Solace of the Defeated (i258) dropped, and a paladin who had higher PR (we use EP/GP) won the item. Some people were upset that he took it over other healers because he had the i245 version (the difference between the two is 18 spellpower and 16 mp5) whereas others did not have a Solace at all (you can use the normal and Heroic versions at the same time, unlike ICC trinkets). Personally, I was fine with him taking the upgrade, as we have a very clear and fair system (I am a big fan of EP/GP), BUT I also believe in upgrading a raiding corps, instead of individuals. So, needless to say, there was some drama over the occurrence, which was quickly nipped in the bud by me posting a thread on the forums. Point is, that loot drama sucks ass, and is something that fair loot systems and mature adults can handle easily, but it still rankles whenever I have to deal with it.
I hope you caught the post after that one. Those “equivalencies” are not exactly right. 1 pseudopower is not equal to .4crit rating, instead you multiply .4crit rating in order to get the amount of pseudopower given by that amount of rating. I used the equal signs to expedite my point, but am afraid it may have been misleading. I think you got it, though, and hope I was more helpful than obfuscating.
Speaking of not finding the instance entrance - yesterday afternoon I was in Blackrock Depths when we wiped (2 dps joined in progress, and were back at the entrance while the rest of us tried to fight our way back to them). One of them had trouble finding the way back to the entrance – and no wonder. It’s easy to get into the mountain, but finding the instance portal for BRD if you’ve never used it is next to impossible. I’m sure we’ll start seeing more of that at lower levels, from people who started playing after the RDF was introduced.
This is true of a lot of the older dungeons - I’m going back and soloing them for the achievements on my main. It’s really amazing to me how much more effort and scale was put into those old dungeons (especially the lvl 40 and up ones) - it’s very clear that they were meant to be the pinnacle of the game for a large portion of the audience.
Something like A-N (or worse, ToC5) is a complete joke compared to those 5-mans!
The DK was an alt (his main is a raider in one of the top Horde guilds on the server–they’re #2, we’re #3). So no, the only guilt here would be that he’s the regular main tank of this particular 10 man raid, and I’m a semi-standby member (though I’ve been getting invited every week since I started going, so that might not quite be true.)
In other news: we spent 4 hours last night wiping on heroic 10 man Sindragosa in my main’s 10 man group. We’re definitely making progress (we got her down to less than 1 million HP) but success is still maddeningly eluding us. It did work better when we had the ranged take off more FR gear. We just need to get better about placing the frost tombs in phase 3 (we had a couple of cases where people got killed because the tombs were too close to Sin) but I think we’re getting really close.
I think this FAQ thread on EJ is where I got it originally, but I can’t seem to find anything with more details even though I’m pretty sure I read it somewhere.
But I just realized that I messed up a bit since in the thread I linked MS got a higher priority than Overpower, whoops. :smack:
Yeah. I remember when Maraudon was first released. That instance was amazing (I have a soft spot in my heart for that instance - first instance that I grouped up with some people that I played for years with), but also really easy to get lost in and incredibly time-consuming, even if you knew what you were doing. Personally, I wish they could find a middle ground between the “instance on rails” that the current instances typify and the larger, exploratory instances like BRD/Maraudon. But, I think that’s because I wish they tied exploration more into the core game than they currently do.
I suppose the only other issue is that you had been just pulled in for that run and he had “seniority” in that group, but you should have been informed of that prior. Regardless, it will drop again, and if you have a regular spot in an ICC raid with your alt then you are in a good position to get it the next time. That regular spot is worth more than the neck, and hopefully the raid leader learned their lesson.
As far as Sindragosa goes, glad to hear you’re making progress. Hope some of the tips I gave helped. One issue that I know we had was that, for one reason or another, our Frost Tombs kept steadily getting closer to her. This was with different people getting Tombed, and yet was consistently happening throughout the evening. We had to eventually just start reminding people to make sure they were at max melee and to give some space between her and their Tomb, and repeated this throughout Phase 3. Seemed odd to me that it was necessary, but there it is (was). Good luck on getting her down this reset; I see Frost Wyrms in your future!
Emailed to myself–I’ll have to check it out when I get home. Thanks!
I dinged 73 and did Violet Hold with a friend for the first time last night. Then we ran it the second time, and, whoo boy, that was interesting.
We both queued as DPS (he’s a DK, and I’m a lock) and got in pretty quickly. As soon as we start arriving, and buffs start happening, the DK tank runs in. . .and starts attacking the people fighting. You know. The guys from the cinematic part. The ones you don’t attack.
“Bare (sic) with me. I need to level up my maces.”
Okay, whatever.
Then he dies. The healer quits. We get a new healer. I explain in a tell: “You’ll have to rezz the tank, he died fighting the mobs from the opening.”
He responds. Then he says, “oh, God, he’s wearing leather.”
Yeah. The DK tank was wearing a leather helm, and two mail pieces. But, we’re in it, so we go. And it quickly becomes madness. The ones that spawn multiple mobs aren’t being controlled. He’s outright missing portals opening. Crowd control’s basically non-existant, and he’s lagging badly enough that we’re getting multiple portals open at once. The only reason we’re even alive is because the paladin healer was awesome.
Finally, in frustration, my friend starts pulling mobs, mostly to get them away from the door before they unlock it and mess up the whole thing, and partly to keep them in the AoE effects that the mage and I are trying to use. I even end up pulling three of them using Metamorphosis+Felguard+OMGGetHereInThirtySecondsOrIDie, because he’s wandering around aimlessly on the opposite side of the room. As soon as my friend starts doing it, he starts whining. Finally, he asks my friend for the third time, “why are u pulling aggro?”
My friend responds: “Because you suck at it.”
“Fine. I’m switching to DPS spec. You tank.”
“…okay.”
And he did. He was also specced for DPS, and doesn’t have a separate tank spec, but he was at least wearing plate, and was quicker on the draw. The rest of it went okay.
It raised a question though: I would think that, if you’re tanking, you should not be wearing a leather helm, a mail belt, and mail. . .it was either gloves or boots. Is there a situation where that’d be acceptable? Or was the guy just being a douche?
There is no situation where a DK should be wearing leather or mail. None. Tank, DPS, doesn’t matter. DKs do not wear leather (or mail).
You’d think the fact that he was given a full set of Blue plate gear at the end of the starter zone would have clued him into the fact that DK == plate, but apparently not…
Let me guess, he was “tanking” in Blood Presence too?
No. The only tank that should be wearing anything less than plate at that level is a bear druid.
Eh. Not necessarily. He could just be an idiot. I’m not sure which way to go there. Hell, his STARTING DK gear was probably better than the stuff he had on. At least it was plate!
Wow, Angel! Do you remember his name? Now I want to look him up. I’ve heard of fail DKs but that might be a winner.
