World of Warcraft General Discussion

OMG! What a great group I just got through the RDF! 2nd day in a row I got H:HoR as my first heroic of the day, and we finished it without a single death! That was really, really nice getting out of there with only a 2g repair bill

I did make one bonehead move, though — while fleeing the Lich King, I got a bit too far ahead of the group and ended up on the wrong side (for a certain definition of “wrong” in that situation) of an ice wall, leaving the other four to battle the trash without me :smack: Fortunately, it was the very first wall, and the easiest group of trash, and they handled it.

Loot at the end … I rolled Greed on a nice purple tank helm (trying to put together a tanking set, to eventually try my hand at that), but lost; rolled DE on a nice DPS ring. I wavered on that one, though. Technically, it would have been something of an upgrade on my Ring of the Kirin Tor, but that upgrade would only last until the next time I upgrade the Ring of the Kirin Tor, from its current “Etched” (iLvl 226) to whatever comes next (iLvl 251), which should be soon. My other ring is iLvl 245, so I went with DE on the ring that dropped.

School of Hard Knocks approaches…

Auugghh, I did that but hated it. How often do you suppose healers get to return flags in Warsong Gulch? But it’s not impossible, eventually.

ding on 60! Wooo now I can fly!

Grats, isn’t it liberating?

Do those two man rockets fail sometimes? I had a pair of undead show theirs off near me in Terrokar. they flew up out of my eye line and seconds later plummeted from the sky without the rocket to splat on the ground.

It’s ok as a healer if you can wear plate you know…

No more than any other mount. They likely dismounted. If it was just one of the players, I’d say that the mount’s controller ejected them; since it’s the very first flying mount that allows more than one person to ride, people are goofing off with dumping their passengers from the flight ceiling.

If only you had a shadow spec with 2 different snare-breaking abilities…

Dispersion, and… what’s the other one? I probably did have a Shadow spec at the time, I just never thought to use it. Honestly returning the flag in WG is difficult for any ranged classes, because you’re not likely to be next to the flag carrier when it drops. But like a lot of the PVP achievements, you can do it if you focus on the achievement and not the objective of the battle.

Nah, disc spec. Ridiculous damage reduction and shields.

You don’t need to use fade or dispersion because you drank a free action potion.

Druids, shaman, and priests are the best runners by a mile.

Fade, if you have it talented.

Also, I guess I misread - I thought you meant “carrying the flag” not “returning the flag”.

I see how that would be convenient

Thanks, lizardling and everyone above, for the advice. Unfortunately, U-Verse issues prevented me from getting on last night to try out. Hopefully tonight.

I did forget to turn growl off, and although the tank was having no trouble keeping aggro, that’s making me miss out on some claws/swipes. I have cut down on the number of mend pets I throw out soloing after I noticed how fast out of combat regen is on pets. I’ll head over to the AH and pick up a Glyph of the Hawk. I think I get another Major glyph at 30… any thoughts? It seems to me like multishot would be pretty good, as I really don’t have all that many buttons to press.

You can also do a premade with a group of friends, and take turns returning the flag. If you’re lucky, you’ll even end up with a group of opponents who’ll cooperate. (Works better for flag capping in AV, but even still.)

ETA: That was @Skammer. Ugh, must be a Friday morning where I’m half paying attention.

This is why I love Druids. They do everything awesome.

Here’s a simple macro you can try so you never have to think about Growl again:

#showtooltip
/cast Hunter's Mark
/petautocaston [nogroup] Growl
/petautocastoff [group] Growl

When you make the macro, replace the Hunter’s Mark button in your action bar with it. Then, every time you throw a Hunter’s Mark down (or whatever action you feel most comfortable binding this to) when you’re in a group, it’ll force Growl off. When you’re not in a group, it’ll force Growl on. It really only matters the first time you use it after joining or leaving a group, but this way you never have to think about it.

The only exception is if, for whatever insane reason, you’re expected to tank in a group (usually for impromptu non-instanced quest groups where you’re the only damage soaker). On my last hunter I had a second macro that switched the [group] and [nogroup] conditionals, and just swapped them out of the action bar as needed.

If nobody else was going to use it (all DE and Greed selections) then you should roll need. Nobody will care (what does it sell for, a few gold?) and you will get an upgrade/sidegrade. Just one man’s (and a hunter at that!) opinion.

That’s not always 100% accurate. Sometimes, a lower-tier talent will be better than a higher-tier one. Some of those middle ranges especially are just filler–I’m pretty sure there’s at least one tier of talents in the Prot tree that I’ve skipped completely on Sleu. But it will work that way a lot, and you’re definitely right about focusing on one tree, especially to try to hit your 51-point talent ASAP before spreading points around to other trees, unless there’s something ridiculously powerful in, say, the first tier of one of them.

You might be able to just modify the macro like this:

#showtooltip
/cast Hunter's Mark
/petautocaston [nogroup] Growl
/petautocastoff [group] Growl
/stopmacro [nomodifier]
/petautocaston Growl

Then, if you’re in a situation where you definitely want Growl on, just hold down any modifier key (shift, ctrl, or alt) when you click or type the button the macro is bound to, and it will run the last line. If there’s no modifier key, it will stop before the last line of code. I can’t double-check the syntax from here, tho, so someone else might want to, just to make sure it works as intended.

Now I have my Top Prot talent filled, what do I spend future points on?

The only problem with that I can see offhand is that means every time you throw a Hunter’s Mark while you’re tanking for a group, you have to remember to include the modifier key or you’ll lose Growl. If you’re okay with that, you can do a slightly simpler macro:

#showtooltip
/cast Hunter's Mark
/petautocaston [nomod] [nogroup] Growl
/petautocastoff [nomod] [group] Growl
/petautocaston [mod] Growl

If you don’t include a modifier key, it’ll use the group conditionals to determine what to do. If you do include one, it’ll ignore those lines.

SFG will probably be in with some specific advice, but the general advice is to look at the Arms and Fury trees and see if there are any talents down in the third or fourth tiers (10 to 15 points required) that you’re interested in; if so, start building towards them.
