I’m going to try to ding 44 tonight - I’ve got two of the daggers Lord Vyletongue drops in Maraudon, but I can’t use them until then. I need a weapon upgrade, ha ha ha. Then I might go lockpicking.
My god, Lower Blackrock Spire is confusing! I must have backtracked 4 or 5 times trying to find the connection “C” (as designated in Atlas). Am I right in assuming that getting down to the areas right outside the troll area, then going up the spider wing, then going through the ogres, puts me on the right track?
ETA: To get to Wyrmthalak, I mean. I’m just trying to get Classic Dungeonmaster.
Second question related to LBRS: Can Alliance get the Kibler’s Exotic Pets quest? Or is he just too close to the Horde flightpoint to get to without aggroing people? If not, is it correct that someone in Dalaran sells the worg pups?
The Satyr’s Lash? That’s a nice dagger, but be aware that it’s unique-equipped, so you can’t double-wield two of them unfortunately. The shadow bolt proc looks fun though.
Hey, no problem. I figured if I didn’t get a response here in a few days, I’d bring it up in guild chat. Lately I’ve only been on sporadically and at odd hours, so I’ve often been the only one.
My toon’s name is Yraeg. If you don’t get to it in the next day or two, I’ll shoot you an in-game mail as a reminder.
On a related note, is there any comprehensive SDMB-to-WOW name conversion list around anywhere? I know there’s a list on the 10-man raid thread, but that’s only for those people who are interested in raiding, and wouldn’t cover any of us who still have 50+ levels to go before we get to that point…
Oh, sure, I know you. You don’t have to be online to be promoted so I’ll try to do it tonight.
I don’t think there’s a comprehensive list (I just discovered we have over 200 members in our guild! Mostly inactive alts, apparently). But everyone is encouraged in their “notes” on the character screen to indicate their SDMB handle.
We’ve been banging our heads on Rot for a while without any appreciable success, so we’ve decided that we’ll try moving on to Blood Council after Fester tonight. The rationale for this is that Rot is apparently the second hardest fight due to the coordination required. I can see the point – it’s demoralizing for a non-hardcore guild to spend 2-3 nights on Rot without any progress. It’d be different if we were actually making some headway on him, but… meh.
That said, I’m a little skeptical about Blood Council given what I’ve been reading since they also have a lot going on. It’ll be good to have a change of scenery however.
jayjay, I just checked wowhead and it looks like the goblin who gives the Kibler’s Exotic Pets quest is available to Alliance too. So I’d say give it a go and see.
SP, I’m the Tiniest Warlock in the BDL, Chauli
What kinds of problems are you having with Rotface? He’s really not all that bad at all once you get used to him–the only person who has a somewhat challenging job is the tank who has to kite the oozes. Aside from that, the tricks are just:
-
Make sure that the person who gets the little ooze runs it over to the tank who’s on ooze duty immediately. Mark that tank to make him/her easier to see.
-
When RF announces that he’s “made an angry poo poo,” don’t run out immediately. If you wait a couple of seconds and then run out, he’ll shower his green stuff on the spot where people were, not where they run to.
-
Make sure to run out of Slime Spray whenever possible. It’s not going to kill anybody on Normal difficulty, but it makes life nicer for healers if people just don’t get hit by it.
You’ll get the hang of it–just takes a little time to get everybody coordinated.
Blood Prince Council isn’t a hard fight, but if you’re having trouble with group coordination on Rotface, I wouldn’t advise this as an alternative. There are some nasty coordination mechanics in that fight that make Rotface’s look easy by comparison:
-
You have to have somebody who knows what they’re doing tank Keleseth, because not only do they have to hold aggro on him but they also have to run around collecting purple orbs quickly so they don’t get one-shot by his shadow attack.
-
You need somebody (two somebodies–probably three on 25 man) keep an eye out for Kinetic Orbs, and make sure to hit them before they hit the ground. They have to be kept aloft (like beach balls) until they disappear. If you destroy them they explode, and if they hit the ground they explode. Hunter pets, water elementals, and warlock imps are all good to put on Orbs.
-
You have to make sure everybody keeps their distance from each other, especially when one of the bosses is active (I’m having a senior moment and can’t remember his name!), because the more people are within 10 meters of each other, the more damage everybody takes from the vortexes.
BTW, I highly recommend an addon called AVR (and its companion, AVR Encounters). I’m amazed Blizz hasn’t banned it yet, because it makes raiding EZ mode by putting circles on the ground to mark places you shouldn’t stand/run to, people who have various debuffs/effects, and so forth. It’s amazing.
If you’re high enough level to go through there solo, you can go to that area where Hordemar City starts, and look down over the right hand side, checking out the dropoff. (Don’t jump in the lava, jump in the area with all those caster orcs.) That’ll wind through a bunch of orcs, then up to the spiders, cut through the ogres and other orcs (skip the wolf boss in the area) and head upstairs instead. So yeah, sounds like you’re on the way. You’ll walk through a room with a bunch of orcs and a wooden plank serving as the bridge; you’re close once you’re there.

Also, I’ve seen Alliance hanging out at the FP area, so I assume the NPCs there are hostile but not aggro… but then again, I’m Horde so I can’t say whether that’s changed at all.
Thanks! I never did this at-level, but I can’t even imagine how long it takes if you can’t just run past the groups of mobs without aggro. I’m learning to hate Old World dungeons…
They’re definitely a love-or-hate thing. On the one hand, they are insanely atmospheric. Dire Maul and Blackrock Mountain are epic as anything, and even the lower-level ones like Gnomeregan are pretty impressive…but they’re also long, tiresome slogs that take up more than one hour (varying wildly based on experience and gear), with poor layouts and an abysmal amount of trash. They got it perfect with the Deadmines as far as balancing length and epic atmosphere, then they just got longer and longer and longer…
Of course, there’s plenty of folks who dislike the BC and LK instances, where they’re so short you don’t get much feeling that you’re on some grand adventure or some such. Personally, I think the LK dungeons are sleek, though some are hit and miss. I love Utgarde Keep and Pinnacle, for instance. Excellent design.
I think the Scarlet Monastery strikes the perfect balance there - a number of short instances that nonetheless are obviously thematically linked and tie into each other. Blizzard tried to go back to that well with the three ICC dungeons, but they feel too different from each other to have the same effect. Hopefully with a bit more elbow room they’ll throw a Monastery-like multi-instance into Cataclysm.
Thanks for the information. We were doing it with a holy pally, an OS resto shaman, and a tree. Especially after what you’ve noted here I think some of the issue, to be polite, is heals, other part of it is the coordination; I’ll try logging our attempt tonight and try to see if I can pinpoint any other issues.
Thanks for the validation of my opinion that this is not a good idea. Unfortunately, I’m not the one who’s experienced in ICC so my opinion is being overlooked. I may try to take another run at changing people’s minds, but I’m not too hopeful.
I’ve heard about that; I’m not sure how I feel about it yet. Because as you’ve said, it makes things a lot easier than just having DBM/DXE.
Gnomer isn’t that long. Are people skipping all of the shortcuts or something?
It’s a slog, and the layout can be confusing.
One thing I really, really hope for with Cataclysm is that all the old instances get maps like the LK ones have. Atlas and other addons are fine enough, but nothing beats having a real-time player marker to reference, and the minimap doesn’t cut it.
Note too that Deadmines has an excellent pacing. Each zone builds to its own boss, which leads into the next zone (with the distance between then closing towards the end). So while it is pretty long, there’s a lot of space you don’t HAVE to go in and there’s a definite feeling of progression from place to place.
Well, mission accomplished! Wyrmthalax down, worg pup acquired, and Classic Dungeonmaster achieved! Now going for Knuckle Sandwich and whatever the 4 weapons skills to 400 is. Also farming whelps for whelplings.
Grats jay!
Last night I had enough Frost emblems to purchase my Crimson Acolyte Shoulderpads which also give me the 2-piece set bonus. So that’s a fun upgrade. I think I used my Flash Heal more than usual last night just to play with it. I ran PoS again to try to get those cloth boots from Tyrannus, but he still refuses to drop them for me. Oh, I just realized I forgot to get the Hodir inscription for them… have to do that tomorrow.
I also worked a little on my holy pally, improving my healing macros and then testing them on a Blood Furnace run. One thing I hate about instances in the early 60s is all the really bad DKs, especially the tanks. Last night I was put in a group with a warlock and 3 DKs. The DKs all had similar names and at first I thought they might be multi-boxing, but I guess they were just friends leveling together. Anyway, the DK tank couldn’t zone in and dropped group (I was glad). We got a pally tank instead. But after a couple of trash pulls, the tank quit because the DKs kept pulling trash with their ghouls. Without a tank we wiped on the last pull, and then the DKs both quit. But the lock and I hung around and managed to get a good group to finish up the run, and most importantly, my macros were working perfectly.
One funny side affect: I added “/use 13 /use 14” to all my healing macros so that whatever trinkets I have equipped will be used on every cooldown. I had forgotten that one of my trinkets is the Chained Essence of Erinakus. So every 15 minutes, I belched a green cloud of poison smoke
You really should stop eating those Bad Clams…
Got really easy emblems yesterday. Joined the queue and got Utgarde Keep in progress. There was literally only Ingvar left. All I had to do was run all the way up to where he was to join thr rest of the group, and then we put him down.
I’m confused by this. Were the ghouls pulling aggro, or were they death gripping? Cause if it was the ghouls, that’s not their fault, it’s the tanks. Unless, of course, they had them on Aggressive and were attacking mobs before the tank even got to them. But if that’s the case it would have been better to alert the DKs to put their ghouls on defensive. I know when I started my DK, and never having played a class with a pet before, it took me some time to realize what the different states the pet has mean.
On your statement about healing DKs, I find ever running with geared DKs in heroic 80’s, my disc priest has a helluva time keeping them at full health. Their damage is just so damn spikey. I now know the hell I put healers through with my DK tank
On a totally different topic, I’ve decide to try for the Loremaster achievement on my 80 disc healer priest. It’s pretty fun and mindless just following my Carbonite arrow and listening to an audiobook. I’m starting with Kalimdor as I’ve read it’s the biggest pain in the ass. It was fun running through and doing the Wailing Caverns quests…my wimpy lil healer kicked its ass! Then I had some quests in Maurdon (or whatever its called). I had never been there, and I leveled this toon just as BC was released, so it wasn’t a ghost town then like it is now. Anyway, I think I may have to wait till I can dual spec to solo that one. The first couple mobs I killed took way too long for me to smite down.
