World of Warcraft General Discussion

Thanks you two!

I know about the obsolete-a-didity of those manuals, but you know, even so, they DO give you some basics, or don’t they?

I have the Lich King manual right in front of me, and when I don’t go to to thotbot, wowwiki, etc., I DO usually poke my nose in there.

FINALLY got the “Finding the Philactery” under Wolkie’s belt tonight, y’all! THAT was one of the quests I kept having to “push aside for now”, because I didn’t understand what they wanted us to do.

We finally found the correct pond to dive into, killed the mob and got to 15% to level 73.

On another subject, it was nice seeing sexy badlilsister in the guild tonight, thanks Mister Rik and glad you got your “hits” in!

Another question: There’s a book I found on Amazon called “Hacking World of Warcraft”. Do any of you have this book? It sounds like it’s just managing add-ons and as y’all know, I limit myself to just a few of those anyway.

Plus I’m kinda proud that me and Da Wolk’ got here pretty much on our own (with a LOT of help from my Doper Gamer buds, of course), and I’m really not interested in “hacking” anything.

I once asked a Game Stop employee if there were any “cheats” for WoW, and got a look that bespoke to me of leprosy, so I will NEVER make that mistake again, believe me!

I don’t know, y’all. It just seems like it all of a sudden is getting too complicated for me. I would really like to finish Wolkie to level 80, but sometimes I just don’t understand the instructions to get him there.

So it’s a “slow go” for us (and Heather!;)), but we’ll get there!

Thanks to all of you for your help and advice

Quasi, Wolkie, Silka and Heather

I’ve seen that book. It’s just how to code addons 'n stuff.

They do, but it’s generally stuff that you can already find in wowwiki and the Lich King manual, both of which you already have access to.

No, but the first Amazon review describes it as an outdated catalog of addons, and that was back in 2007, so I wouldn’t consider it worth buying either.

If you’re curious and really want to see what addons are out there, vranx.com gives you a small list of links and descriptions for quality addons. (The links go to wowinterface.com or curse.com so they are OK)

No worries – you’ll get there!

Got my new modem good to go, so I’m ready to play. Unfortunately per my agreement with my wife, Tuesday is a “no WoW night.” So I have to wait until tomorrow night to scratch the itch.

Heh. I was telling Quasi in guild chat how the head warlock in SW sent me to kill his ex-girlfriend. Seems he gave her a nice necklace, and then the tramp ran off with some Defias thug

I got ICC gear!

It was my second time in the instance, and the first time where the group was actually serious about it (the first time, it was just a rep run through the trash). Our guild is still largely gearing up, but we gave it a go anyway, and Frost Needle dropped from Lord Marrowgar. And I won the roll.

I felt really bad about winning it, because I was the most undergeared person in the instance (4.5K, the next up was 4.9). But, when we finished for the night, I was third DPS, so I guess I was at least pulling my weight. Which is weird, because I still feel like a noob.

Bah, don’t. The raid profits more by gearing the less-geared people faster. Grats on it.

Grats Angel!. I like that Marrowgar fight a little more each time I do it. It gets so crazy when everyone scatters.

BDL dungeon run tonight, 8:45. I’m confirming with our healer that he will be there tonight – if not we’ll do “random” UK again, but I really want to pick up those last couple of BC 5-mans. If there’s time we can take Azraq through Black Morass again to pick up the alchemy mats he needs.

Can’t wait to get on and see where we’re at for raid tonight! I missed out on 25-man Kingslayer last week 'cause the boyfriend was in town this weekend. (Not that it wasn’t totally worth it, but.)

If you’re using it for solo work, you’re fine to just get a 2H weapon (preferably an Axe or Polearm) and work from there. But your Prot gear will have some useless stats for DPS on it–like Stamina, Defense, etc.–so you’ll probably want to hold off on running instances as DPS until you pick up at least a few more pieces.

I dunno if you noticed, but it looks like at least one of those guys working on the roof agrees with you.

1.) Historically, Arms is the main PvP spec for Warriors, but it’s also a viable PvE one.
2.) For an 80, at relatively lower gear levels, Arms actually outperforms Fury.
3.) IMO, Arms is a lot more fun than Fury (which is tedious to the extreme–Fury is pretty much a two- to three-button rotation).
4.) Arms brings some great buffs–like for bleeds, which will make characters like Feral kitties love you.

For an endgame raider, Fury>>>Arms, no question. But for a more casual player, or someone who’s still leveling or gearing up, Arms is still quite viable.

The only restriction on Heroic Wrath instances is character level and gear level. It’s raids that someone has to unlock the Heroic versions of (and you only need one person in the raid to do that).

Replace or delete the sound files. It’s what I did for the Deathcharger noise; if something like XT bugs you that much, it won’t hurt anything, and it will help a lot.

Off the top of my head:

Hit to cap (8%, minus any talent like Precision)
Expertise to cap (26)
Armor Penetration (ArP) to soft cap if you have a proc trinket or hard cap if you don’t (hard cap = 1400; soft cap = hard cap minus the amount the trinket procs for)
Strength

The caps given are for a level 80 character. IIRC you’re a bit shy of that still, so don’t worry about trying to max any stats out yet–just pick up what you can.

Check out the EJ thread in the Warrior forum for the patch 3.3 basics for all three specs. I think this might be the right link–I can’t check on it from work. It will tell you what stats to focus on, what spec is the best, and what rotation/priority order to use.

All things being equal, Poleaxe > Mace > Sword spec. I think you’re looking at something like at least a tier of difference between them in terms of efficacy.

For a Warrior? Back to Str. Any other ArP will just be going to waste for any duration of time the trinket is procced.

Don’t forget that Greed == DE as far as the roller is concerned. If you want an item for an offset, IMO ask if anyone needs it for their main spec, and if not, then feel free to roll Need on it yourself. OS gear that will be used should always trump vendor trash/shards.

Yes. Your spec should always match your current weapon.

Grats!

1.) Could be running a friend through.
2.) Could be bored.
3.) Could have clicked the wrong thing.
4.) Could be testing a new gear set or rotation.

Are you familiar with Decursive? I use it on any toon that has any kind of debuff-removing ability.

Any other Paladins in the raid? Could be the RL was reserving loot for a friend.

Cheating tends to be a lot more accepted in single-player games than multiplayer. Especially in MMOs, cheating can be taken very seriously, because when the game is easier for one person, it can really ruin the experience for everyone else.

Yeah, I use Quiet That Horse!, which gives it a more subtle, thunder-like sound instead.

But that’s wooooork! I like whining betterrrrrr!

I mean, uh. I guess I’ll have to look into an MPQ editor, then. :stuck_out_tongue:

Oh, no doubt. I rolled DE on the robe just cuz I had no use for it, and Greed rather than Need on the boots cuz I’m really not in any hurry to tank and just figured, meh, if I get the boots, cool, if not, no biggie. Or put another way, I’d rather have the boots than the shard from DEing them, but didn’t really care if didn’t get them.
Man, ran with some real pricks today. It took nine people to finish H:AN. Tank pulled a group of trash, and I saw somebody in chat ask, “Why are we pulling these?” (Erm, why not? They’re in the road …) I didn’t see exactly what happened next, but we’d barely started in on that group of trash when a whole 'nother group of trash jumped into the fray, and then the tank quit right in the middle of it. Everybody but the hunter died. If I had to guess, the hunter pulled the second group, because while the rest of us were running back the healer basically ordered him to leave (it was still too early to kick). He didn’t, and didn’t reply. So we requeued, and then the hunter quit, and the healer quit almost immediately afterward, and then somehow we got a replacement tank, healer, and 3rd DPS almost instantly. Off we went. Then a bit further in, sometime after the first boss, the boomkin from the original group DC’d, and now I was the only one left from the original group. Got a new DPS, and finished out the instance. Herald Volazj was surprisingly easy this time.

Ended up queueing for a new dungeon with one of the replacement DPSers, a DK. We ended up in VH, where we had a gnome DK tank. As I usually do with gnome tanks, I put a mark on her so I could keep track of where she was … and that’s when the trouble started. Somebody else in the group then decided it would be funny to mark everybody in the group, and apparently had some kind of macro or addon that kept everybody’s marks constantly changing randomly (all the way through the entire run), which was irritating as hell and completely defeated the purpose of my marking the tank. Everybody was complaining about it and hollering for whoever it was to knock it off, but we couldn’t prove exactly who was doing it. We suspected the healer, but nothing was showing up in my logs to say who it was. But during the Cyanigosa fight I actually had to bubble and heal myself, because the healer wasn’t doing it. But since the consensus seemed to be that it was the healer, I went ahead and put him/her on my ignore list so that I don’t get grouped with him/her in the future.

OTOH, I topped the DPS meter in both instances

Oh yeah, and my belf pally got H:CoS for the first time the other night … and I am getting so frakkin’ tired of griefing tanks who go AFK in CoS while the timer on the drake-dropping boss runs out

Woo! Finally saved up enough Saronite for my Boots of Kingly Upheaval Boots of Kingly Upheaval - Item - World of Warcraft now I can say bye bye to those ugly boots from H FoS.

So I’ve been randoming a lot on my alts lately, mostly sleeping through SM Graveyard on my baby disc priest and facero-- I mean Retting it up in the Outlands instances on my paladin. Today though I ran into the infamous DK tank wearing spell power armor, except this DK was doing a damn fine job at tanking. I was impressed and a little frightened.

In my quest to have all four tanking classes at 80 I’ve decided to tank on my paladin the rest of the way to 80, or maybe most of the way. I have to say it’s pretty nice to zone in and hear “OMG its the awesome tank from earlier!!11”.

Since Kahmu has been asked to go Resto/Laser Chicken by my raid leader I rolled another druid, on another server all my Cairne slots are full :(, but I had forgotten how much slower it was to level without heirlooms. I did roll alliance this time so the change in scenery and quests are keeping it pretty fresh. At least until I hit 15 and can Random until my fur falls out.

Yeah I’ve heard about it but I’ve never really looked into it. I’ll probably just bind them to my keyboard anyway… when I stop being lazy.

General update and some questions…

I played pretty much more than I expected(surprise!) and managed to dual box two druids up to level 40. I got bored with those and started dual boxing a warlock/hunter. Soloing(if you can call dual boxing that) is much better than with the feral/balance combo. There’s virtually no downtime so it’s going much quicker so far at least.

Now for the questions:
Is questing pretty much the best way to level all the way up to BC instances or are the ones at level 30-60 worth it?

If I’m supposed to start instances before 60+ how should I do that? They are for 5 players and up, right?

If I have to group with others how the heck am I supposed to coordinate that? I’ve grouped with one other person for questing and it was a huge drag on efficiency. Talking with the bubbles is a HUGE PIA.

I’ve been invited to a few guilds which seems kind of intimidating. I usually just say that I’m a newb and don’t know what that is(which is pretty true) and keep running. Is it a practical requirement to join a guild? I’d like to but knowing zero people in-game makes it a chore.

Addons. I’ve installed ACP, Bagnon, Omen, DCoords, Keepfollow, Dominos, and Carbonite. Are there any indispensible ones that I’m missing? I’ve heard about the Auctioneer one but I haven’t gone near that part of the game yet so holding off for now.

Thanks in advance.

The classic dungeons can be a bit of a drag, but that’s purely a personal opinion; some folks love them. They certainly give you better gear than quests will. They’ll also give you faster XP than questing, especially if you take the time to collect the dungeon’s quests beforehand. You don’t need to have especially good gear to run through mid-level dungeons, as long as your gear isn’t 20 levels behind or anything.

You don’t have to coordinate with anyone to get into a dungeon. If you click on the little eye in the row of buttons along the bottom right of your UI (it will say Dungeon Finder, and you can also press I to bring it up), you will see that you can either queue for a random dungeon appropriate to your level, or you can choose a specific dungeon or dungeons to queue for. Random will get you a group faster, and you’ll get extra money and a random piece of blue gear on completing the dungeon. When you queue, it will wait until it finds 1 tank, 1 healer, and 3 DPS, and will transport you all to the start of the dungeon automatically. The only way it could be easier is if they just gave you the rewards without the dungeon.

Regarding talking through bubbles…do you not have your chat window up? Everything that shows up in bubbles will also show in your chat window, and it’s a good deal easier to follow conversation that way. You can even turn off the bubbles entirely.

BDL report:
We ran through Mechanar last night. It took a while to get started, because we only had four people at-level. Instead of trying to pug another DPS for a dungeon that nobody does, we took along Yeticalya’s 80 ret pally. But because he’s 80, we couldn’t zone in with the DF, so we had to all trek out to Netherstorm. Then because I and the healer haven’t bothered to learn to fly yet, our lock (who we were luck to have) summoned us into the instance.

Once we all got in, we didn’t have too much trouble. I had a couple of aggro issues but nothing unrecoverable. I was confuse by the layout, though; it didn’t seem to match the description on Wowwiki. But we never wiped and I think only had one death. The only plate that droped was a wierd helm with +spellpower and +def. I guess if you’re dual-specced prot/holy and too lazy to have two sets of gear you might want that, but it’s pretty useless. Next week: Arcatraz.

My other pally tried running UK again, but the DK tank first pulled all the trash at the top of the first stairs (we wiped) and then, when we rezzed and re-buffed, he pulled only three and failed to keep aggro on any of them - we wiped again. That’s when I dropped group. But I did more questing in BT and am very close to 70. Both my pallies will be hitting 70 soon.

The group I to ICC25 with on Fridays invited me to do ICC10 last night but I had to decline due to the dungeon run. Too bad because they were on the plague section which is as far as I’ve gotten so far.

Laemadras may be taking a break. RL friends who ditched me are planning to come back to the game at the end of August, so I have to level up my 63 Hunter to 70 before then. Then I guess we’ll all go to Northrend together! The only time I’ve ever played with anyone I know was an instance with Moobird.

It’s going to be so weird going back to a hunter from a rogue. Melee to ranged and adding a pet! I’ll have to quest a bit before I try any instances. I tend to stick to a character for a long time and don’t play with any of my others. Well, I only have two characters anyway.

Back in TBC, paladin tanks didn’t have their spellpower scale from their stamina, so they needed it on the gear they used. So, most paladin tanks used spellpower weapons (the gladiator maces were very popular) and gear such as that. Blizzard eventually realized that was stupid, and hence the changes in Wrath.

Short on the normal people at raid time, so we ran ToGC25 instead. The GM offered to pay everyone in raid 1k gold each if we could make it through the first four bosses in an hour. I think we ended up with 20 minutes to spare. Also, I won the roll on Justicebringer, which was a very nice upgrade from the sword I got off of Vez HM a few months back (Voldrethar, Dark Blade of Oblivion or something emo like that). Would have been happier to get the Heroic version of Satrina’s Impending Scarab, but like hell that’s ever going to drop.

Threw down a few attempts on Anub for the hell of it while we were there, since two of us had Unhittable sets. (Mine is getting so good, I was finally able to equip my Gnomregan Auto-Blocker and I’m *still *way over the avoidance cap.) Considering how many people were in the raid who’d never even seen the hardmode encouter before, we did really well. A lot of shit that needed tightening up, but I think we would have gotten it if we’d had a bit more time. But, we finally had enough online to head over to ICC. I hopped in for one H-LDW attempt, then popped out for the evening so we could pull in some more DPS.

Fingers crossed for an LK kill this week… I WANT MY KINGSLAYER, DAMMIT! pounds fist emphatically on desk

Yup, I believe that’s what I picked up, shortly after Wrath dropped.

That works, then. Just wanted to make sure you knew not to be shy about asking to Need on stuff you’ll actually put to use.

Transfer to my server long enough for me to run you through?

That’s because all Paladins needed it back in TBC, so there’s a ton of gear that’s itemized with caster stats + DPS stats or caster stats + tanking stats. So assuming you’re looking at a character in their 60s, that could have just been a drop that was a good upgrade, with an extra bit of trash stat on it.

For example:

Outland is full of Pally trash like that, which is now relatively useless to everybody.

It’s obscenely easy and intuitive to use. You get a little box for everyone in your group or raid, the box lights up when the person has something to dispel, and then clicking the box in a certain way performs an action on it. (E.g., on my Mage, I believe that left-click is Decurse and right-click is Polymorph, for when someone gets MC’d.)

Instances will get you the best loot, for sure, as well as teaching you how to play your class/spec in a group environment. However, questing still has good returns for the time investment, and some of the mid-level instances can get pretty tedious. Personally, I like to mix it up.

Instances are for 5 players, although I think some of them can be entered with larger groups (or at least you used to be able to do that). Traditionally, though, they’re run in groups of 5: one tank, one healer, and three DPS.

As someone else pointed out, the RDF (random dungeon finder) has made this way easier than it used to be. You can either sign up for any random level-appropriate dungeon, or you can select specific dungeons to queue for. You can join on your own, or join as a group. Any empty slots in the group will be filled by other players searching for the same instances, selected from the available pool on your battlegroup. (A battlegroup is a cluster of realms–these are also the people you’re matched against in PvP Battlegrounds.)

I only leave bubbles up for Say and Yell–I turned off the Party ones as soon as they enabled them. Party chat I just read in the chat log. If you haven’t done so yet, you can create extra chat tabs and/or customize what shows up in each one. Personally, I have four to five chat tabs on every character: one with everything, one for the combat log, one for things like looted items/cash/skillups/rep, and then one or two chat-related windows that only show guild chat, emotes, raid chat, party chat, etc.–no Local or Trade.

Guilds make life a lot easier, but there are good ones and bad ones. IMO, any guild that just randomly invites you is not one you’d want to be a part of–if they’re inviting just any schmuck off the street, there are going to be people around you’d rather not associate with. This is one of the times where the random dungeon matcher can come in handy–if you’re grouped with someone from your realm and you enjoy running the instance with them, you can ask to join their guild (or they might invite you). Or if you’re out questing and you end up teaming up with someone else, that could be a good sign, too.

I love-love-love Auctioneer. If you’re not using the AH, at least to sell if not to buy, you’re missing out on a lot of income. For many things but vendor trash, you’ll get a way better price by selling to a fellow player via the AH than by selling to a vendor NPC. Auctioneer helps you out by setting up a historical database of prices based on scans you perform, so that it can then compare current prices to those historical ones. It’s not perfect, but it’s miles better than going in and having no idea whether the current price of an item is typical or a fluke.

Otherwise, you have a good solid starter set for addons. I run so many these days that I can’t really tell you all of them off the top of my head–if I think of it, I’ll make a list when I get home and post descriptions of all of them. Really, for a beginning/casual player, there’s nothing wrong with taking an “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” mentality to the game. Addons can be very useful, but none of them are essential.

Oh I love that pally trash, it’s helping me level my enchanting :D. The DK was gemming for spellpower and MP5 as well, which made it even more confusing. I did let him know at the end of the run that spellpower wasn’t something a DK would want and to look for more strength items/gems.

Thought I’d take a break from tanking on my paladin today and go Ret for a few randoms, it wasn’t such a good idea. First group, Auchenai Crypts, with a gogogogogogo DK who pulled more than she could handle and zoomed off without looking at the healers mana. In the final boss room she pulls 3 of those skeleton packs and dies, first death she’s had, no biggie. Healer resses her and she runs off to aggro the remaining 3 packs and goes down even faster than the first time and rages at the healer who was sitting down drinking. She gets a res, rebuffed and then refuses to pull. Healer and tank get into this argument over who the bigger noob is, oh my main solos H Lich King every week, I’m not pulling haha you can’t make me. While they’re arguing I switch specs, gear, buff myself and the other dps and tank the boss myself… all while the healer and tank are still going at it. I’m pretty sure they’re still in the dungeon arguing.

Ran through Strath a couple days ago for some enchanting mats and picked up this fun little item http://www.wowhead.com/item=13379 I havn’t used it yet, but it looks fun.
