That sounds frustrating! It’s not as if dying actually hurts, and getting to your corpse only takes seconds, so I don’t understand why one would leave someone who came to help them, as seems to have happened here…
Actually, if you scan the auction house frequently, Auctioneer does keep track of the sale price. It infers that by seeing what auctions are gone before their expiration. Even then, it will miss auctions that have come and gone between your scans. Thus, the actual market price will always be below what Auctioneer thinks, but it may not be much if scan a lot.
I typically scan once or twice a day. Even if I don’t have time to play, it takes less than a minute to log onto my auction alt and start a scan.
Speak for yourself–these days, dying “hurts” me to the tune of over 10g per death.
Yeah, but you can earn back that 10 gold in 10 minutes or less by doing a daily.
Very true, Tom, but if I’d done the same daily and *hadn’t *died, I’d have 20g instead of 10g, and I’ll take twice the money any day of the week.
10 gold in one quest?
See, that’s why I want to get to 80. I need to bankroll my lowbies.
Darn Paladin’s been sitting at 60-61 for months now.
10g would actually be on the low end for a daily. Most of 'em will net you at least 13g. The Champion-level Argent Crusade Tournament dailies will actually get you over 20g, assuming you go for the cash bonus instead of the rep.
If you’re lucky you can get more than 100g from the daily fishing quest in Dalaran, only been that lucky twice since they were added though.
That’s not from the guaranteed-hard-cash quest reward, though–that’s just the potential value of the vendor trash that has a chance to drop out of the bag. (I’m assuming you’re referring to the Porcelain Bell that sells for 100g–other items that have a chance to drop vendor for anything from 25g to a handful of copper.)
And it all ties together today!
This is exactly why fish prices are so low for Northrend fish, right? Everybody getting the easy cash from the daily and then posting the fish on the AH.
As far as quest money the Tourney quests have been a nice cash source for me. Once you get to Champion (and if you then Valiant for another faction) you have like 200g worth of quest rewards for doing what is really 4 quests (kill the Scourge, jousting, Chillmaw, attack at the gate). You can also do the “worthy weapon” valiant quest but that involves more traveling. This quest loop can also include the (quick, easy) Shadow Vault dailies for another 40g or so.
Eh, the only fish you’re going to get a *lot *of that way are Nettlefish when it’s the *%#$ Ghostfish day after day after day. (DEAR MORON QUESTGIVER: IT’S NOT A MYSTERY AFTER THE FIRST EFFING TIME. HOW ABOUT YOU JUST REMEMBER WHAT HAPPENED YESTERDAY SO I DON’T HAVE TO HAUL MY ASS OUT TO SHOLAZAR BASIN AGAIN JUST SO I CAN TELL YOU THE SAME THING HAPPENED AGAIN FOR THE FIFTIETH TIME.) Other than that, you’re fishing in the sewer, WG, or the Frozen Sea, and you’ll either get trash/novelty fish, or fish that still auction for a good amount because they’re used in high-end buff recipes.
Right now it’s Glacial Salmon and Nettlefish. My bank alt has been trying to sell these for my main for a couple weeks now. I think my main sent two stacks of 20 of each fish to my alt, and my bank alt has posted these same fish repeatedly. I’ve tried them in stacks of 5, and when that failed three times I broke them down to stacks of 2. I’ve sold a few that way, but the rest just keep coming back. I’m thinking I’m just gonna finish leveling fishing in the Dalaran fountain and stop bothering with actual fish.
Yeah, I noticed that a long time ago, but it somehow never registered that I wasn’t seeing it on a failed auction. Probably because before I got to Northrend I didn’t see so darned many failed auctions. I’ve found all sorts of cool gear, but nobody seems to want the crap.
Ugh, that may be your problem right there. Make sure you’re always thinking about how someone is going to use what you’re selling. Anyone buying fish probably isn’t going to make one or two at a time–they want to get full stacks of buff food. Breaking your stacks into such small amounts is less convenient for people, so even if you’re priced slightly lower, they’ll pick someone who’s got a full stack up just because it’s easier to buy out one auction than ten.
Some things work well in smaller stacks–chant mats, especially high-end crystals, will often go that way, since people generally chant one item at a time as they get upgrades. But for things that people like to produce in mass quantities, the larger the stack size, the better. (Caveat–if you’ve got an odd (in the not-normal sense, not vs. even) stack size to sell, break it up into something more even that people can easily add–e.g., if you have 12, break it into 10 and 2.)
Oh, and…
Greens or blues? Most people won’t bother buying greens as upgrades. You’re better off having a chanter DE them for you, and then either selling the mats or holding on to them for when you want to get your own geat chanted. If it’s blues, make sure you’re not just looking at prices for the item, but prices on items of comparable type (armor class and slot), level, and stats. Most people browsing for upgrades won’t be on the lookout for your particular item–they’ll have filters on that will bring up similar things, too.
In addition to the advice about stack size, also keep in mind that you need to consider price / item. Selling a stack of 5 (or whatever) at less than the current price for that stack size won’t necessarily net you any sales. People are typically looking for the cheapest overall items. So make sure that your 5-stack is lower per fish than even the 20-stacks, and you’ll have a higher chance of selling them. I will typically go through the auctions and check all stacks for sale to find the lowest per-item cost, and then price my stack(s) accordingly. When looking to buy mats (or rep turn-ins, if I’m lazy), I will likewise look for the lowest cost / item to purchase.
Ah, okay. I usually didn’t bother trying to auction fish until I discovered these Northrend fish, so I was going by what had worked for me with other stuff. More than once in the past I’ve posted a stack of 20 of whatever — usually high-priced stuff — that ended up not selling after several tries, and then breaking it down into stacks of 5 and watching them all sell almost immediately. So when I saw that a stack of 20 Glacial Salmon had a market price of ~50g, I automatically assumed it would sell better in smaller stacks. When they come back from the AH, I’ll try stacks of 20 and see what happens. Seems like the AH becomes a whole new ballgame once you get to NR!
Well … they were when it was Outland gear I was selling. I suppose it’s a matter of so many people playing in NR that the market is just flooded with NR-level gear? I know that before I got to Outland I was buying a lot of Outland gear at the AH, and then while I was in Outland I was buying NR gear. The result was that I got to NR with gear that was already better than the quest-reward stuff. I wonder if a lot of it has to do with players in NR being more interested in saving up for fast flight and epic flying mounts, so they make do with their quest reward gear.
Next topic …
My lowbie dwarf fighter finished up in Dun Morogh and moved on to Loch Modan yesterday, and once again I’m experiencing that old familiar level 10-20 frustration. I arrived in Loch Modan at lvl 12 and accepted every quest being offered in Thelsamar and along the road on the way to Thelsamar. That meant, I think, three or four lvl 12 quests, a lvl 15 quest, and a lvl 22 quest. WTF? It’s been a while since I last quested in Loch Modan, but I could swear there were more level-appropriate quests there than that. Isn’t Loch Modan sort of supposed to be the dwarf questing equivalent of what Westfall is for humans and what Darkshore is for nelfs? None of the lvl 12 quests led into lvl 13 quests; I did them and that was it - no followups. So I’ve run this guy down to Elwynn Forest, but doggonit, I’m playing a dwarf! I want dwarf quests! I’ve done the human Elwynn/Westfall quest dance enough times already!
Many zones have quest givers all over the place, and there is sometimes no good indicator for where you can find them. Loch Modan has additional quests at the south end of the road, the north end of the road as well as some spread out over the eastern side of the lake. If you are familiar with wowhead, the zone map with quest giver pins can be very useful for seeing where you can find new quests. For example for go to Loch Modan Zone Map and select the “alliance” from the drop down menu, and you can see where to gain quests in the zone for the alliance.
Yeah, I guess I’ll have to head North. I’ve done the ones at the guard tower to the south (except for the lvl 15 quest they handed me after completing their lvl 12 quests). I already know from past experience that, at lvl 13, I’m not gonna survive long on the other side of the loch. I just thought I remembered more quests being handed out right in Thelsamar, but like I said it’s been a while since I last quested in Loch Modan.
Did you do the Explorer’s League quests from the one building in Thelsamar? They lead you to the excavation where there is another quest.
FWIW, I had the same problem with my briefly-played Dwarf Hunter in Loch Modan. I stalled hard in the teens because of the relative dearth of quests.
If you really can’t find enough, I suggest Darkshore. It’s a dreary place, but there’s tons of quests and it won’t drain your soul nearly as badly as Westfall. (Goretusk Liver Pie and Westfall Stew are hateful, evil quests.)
