World of Warcraft questions

Yup. The only way I’ll level a priest, if I have to do any soloing at all, is by going Shadow spec. My shadow priest - currently level 77 - is about the furthest thing from a healer right now. It’d be like calling a feral druid a healer; yeah, one could drop some heals but they’d be inefficient and the character wouldn’t be doing the thing they currently do best.

My husband and I are leveling our healers-to-be right now because most of the teenage/early-20s contingent in the guild are all omg-in-love with their hunters/warlocks/DKs and can’t figure out why no tanks or healers are ever available for all the raids they want to do.* :smack: (The reason why my warlock beat my supposed-to-be-main priest to 80 was because I hooked up with a tank/Holy priest duo for instances.) Bunch of whiners. We’ve made pointed comments about ‘gosh, no one seems to want to play a tank or healer, that’s why you can’t get a heroic going right now’ but the only effect was to get them to say ‘but I have a tank/healer’ and then pull out their lvl 20-somethings and expect to be run through every instance in the game, multiple times.

*Or why no one wants their DK as a tank. That’s because you need great gear, spec, and skills to measure up to an okay tank-build warrior or paladin, you dopes.

Yep. Everyone wants to be the guy who delivers the final blow on the boss, not the one keeping everyone else alive to get the glory. I love my hunter, but he’s my solo character. Pally all the way!

Tanking is great fun. I healed for a while, and it’s hardly even the same game, but still more interesting than DPS, which unless you’re also doing some crowd control or off-tanking seems like the boringest role to play.

Tell me about “Daily Quests”. I see there are achievements related to completing daily quests. Yet to the best of my knowledge, I have never encountered a daily quest. Is this something you only see at higher levels in certain areas?

Fun with my pally yesterday. I spent some time clearing some quests from my log - mainly in Arathi Highlands, quests handed out in Refuge Pointe (Killed Otto & Falconcrest, got the head of Marez Cowl, etc). Then I finally discovered Fandil’s Cove and did all the quests for the pirates in there. After that it was back to Theramore (my pally likes Theramore - all of the black-haired female guards have her face) where I finished up several quest chains re: Deserters and Defias, killed a bunch of tauren, torched some tents, etc. Did all the quests for the goblins and ogre in Mudsprocket. In the process I managed to raise my rep with Booty Bay to “Friendly” (and the Syndicate and Bloodsail Buccaneers really hate me). Most of the quests in these locations handed me massive XP, so between the quest XP and XP for killing mobs I actually managed to level from 38 to 41 in a single day - and I spent all but the short stretch from 38 to 39 in the purple. It’s nice to finally be able to wear plate, and several of the quest rewards were, conveniently, plate. On the downside, I wish there was a way to make all these pieces match a little better. My pally is starting to look like a garishly-colored clown :stuck_out_tongue: Anyway, it looks like Tanaris is the next stop for Eilyssana.

Re: my new BC characters: I’m finding my draenei toons a lot more fun to play than my blood elf toons. There seems to be a sense of humor in the draenei starting areas that is completely lacking in the belf area (I just did the Kessel Run in under 15 minutes! Red Snapper … Very Tasty!) Can somebody explain the female draenei /rude gesture to me? I get the male gesture (I bite my thumb at thee!), but I don’t think I’ve ever seen the female gesture before (for you who haven’t seen it, she spanks her butt twice, rubs the spot, and then makes a palm-up flinging motion with her hand).

Also, I assume the draenei accent is supposed to be a generic Middle Eastern accent? Or is it more Indian? I love the way the female says “Good!” in her /flirt line, “Are you thinking what I’m thinking? Good! Bring ample supply of butter, and goblin jumper cables.”

There was one blood elf quest that I found impossible for my priest - I think it was the one at the docks. I had to kill a guy and loot some item off him. He was at the top of a tower, and had two guards with him. My priest is so fragile at this point that it was almost impossible to kill even one of those guys before the group of three beat me down. I couldn’t find any way to pull just one of them; as soon as I’d hit one with a spell, all three would charge at me and be on top of me before I could get a second spell off. I tried several times and finally gave it up. The one time I managed to kill the boss guy, knowing I was going to die any second (out of mana, no potions, other two enemies still alive and well) I attempted the “loot the corpse before I’m killed” tactic so that I could just rez at the GY and I’d have the item on me. But I was killed before the looting could complete, and that triggered a strange glitch. Making my way back as a ghost, I started back up the tower, and every time I stopped moving my ghost would drop down into the looting posture. I finally got close enough to my corpse to rez, and then my rezzed toon immediately dropped into looting posture. By this time the boss guy had respawned, but his first corpse was still there, sparkling, so I tried to loot it and sneak away, but the loot cursor remained black and I couldn’t loot. So I gave up and went back to the town. I killed a couple more mobs, and found I couldn’t loot their corpses either (cursor remained blacked out). That glitch remained until I logged out and back in. Weird.

Likely the only daily quests you can complete are the battleground ones (each day it’s a quest to be on the winning team of one of the battlegrounds - you can only do the Warsong Gulch or Arathi Basin ones). Most of the others are at a higher level - complete list here: Comprehensive List of Dailies - Dungeons & Raids - Wowhead Forums. Everything else seems to be at either level 58 (Hellfire Peninsula) or Level 70 (at least) or seasonal. You can do up to 25 daily quests per day and apparently they are a pretty good source of gold (I’ve only done the battleground ones myself and the main draw there is the bonus honor).

This same thing happened to me once in STV (I didn’t die, I just could no longer loot anything). Logging out was the only solution. I think I did interrupt my looting somehow (call pet maybe?).

I think dailies don’t start until you get to Outland (except for holidays…some of the special holiday quests are dailies).

The draenei accent is actually more Eastern European/Russian. A lot of male draenei phrases sound to me like Tom Lehrer in Lobachevsky.

Yes, daily quests were not present in Vanilla WoW. If I remember correctly, the first one you come across will be in Hellfire Peninsula, the first zone you see in Outland (part of The Burning Crusade content). Come to think of it, you might be able to get one before then; if you make a trip to a capital city and head to where you queue up for the battlegrounds, you might be eligible for a daily battleground quest. At 42, you can’t enter all the BGs though, so you might have to wait to be able to pick that up.
You won’t see many dailies until you arrive in Northrend (Wrath of the Lich King content). There were a good number of daily quests available for level 70s in TBC, but they’re probably not worth doing if you’re on your way to 80. Blizzard implemented many daily quests in WotLK for the trip from 70-80 though.

Glad to hear you’re enjoying it.
The amount of leveling you did in one day really drives home how much easier it is to level now. Not only is the amount of experience you need to get from 30-70 lower, they went back and added new quests and made the tough ones easier. When I leveled my paladin four years ago, all the mobs in Stromgarde (where you did Otto & Falconcrest, etc.) used to be elite–you’d need 3 or 4 people to survive in there. Assuming you didn’t have a high-level friend to help out, that is.
Not that I’m nostalgic for the slow leveling. I got my fourth character to 70 right before WotLK launched.

Incidentally, are you leveling your First Aid at all? To get past 150 you need to buy a few manuals from a vendor in Stromgarde.

I am a little nostalgic for that, though. It seems all the quest and dungeon gear in WotLK uses the same model (within armor class, anyway–the plate armor is a different model than the mail, etc.). You generally look pretty badass, but I was hoping for a bit more variation while leveling. I was glad to get my Tier shoulders from Naxxramas and get my fugly brown spiky shoulders off my paladin.

You’ve stumbled across the dreaded loot lag! Yeah, it’s annoying. It hasn’t happened to me in a while, but back when it was more common I’d just Alt+F4 and come back into the game as quick as I could. Usually I’d get disconnected if I tried to let it resolve on its own anyway.

I’ll have to get my GF to do this so I can see it, but generally butt-spanking is supposed to mean “Kiss my ass!” It’s also used in City of Heroes, as seen here, and frequently used in animated shows. The rubbing and flinging motion aren’t ringing a bell, though.

It’s hard to tell. I originally thought Russian, but it could be Russian or Middle Eastern. I don’t think it’s Indian, but the male /dance is made up of ‘moves’ from an Indian music video, so it’s confusing.

At this point, I’m pretty much sold on using just Draenei and Blood Elf characters, unless I want to use a class neither one has. They and their starting zones are just head and shoulders above the classic races IMO.

Ah, okay. “Eastern European” was my other thought. I was thinking Zsa Zsa Gabor a little bit. And I guess the draenei are supposed to be goat-based? At first I thought “horse”, but then I saw they’re cloven-hoofed.

Yeah, but I don’t think my pally’s to 150 yet. I’ll have to check.

That’s a Lore (yes, capital L) question. The draenei that can be player toons are exiles from the Eredar, which are a type of creature that joined the Burning Legion and became a type of demon. The draenei are led by Velen, who refused to accept the help of the titan Sargeras when the other leaders of the Eredar did. The Eredar became demons and the exiles (“draenei” means “exiled ones”) fled through the dimensions. They settled on a planet they called Draenor (Home of the Exiled), which was the planet the orcs originated on. The other leaders of the Eredar eventually discovered both the draenei and the orcs and came to Draenor. The Burning Legion enslaved the orcs and turned them to bloodlust, and tried to raze the draenei. The draenei escaped in a section of Tempest Keep, the Exodar, and crashed through sabotage on Azeroth.

Right, but I was talking more of the inspiration for their appearance. Tauren are basically minotaurs, which are cow-based, so I wondered if the draenei are similarly goat-based. Fauns/satyrs, basically.

Very newb question: I’m leveling my priest (just hit 14!) and I suddenly wondered: when you specialize, does that mean you only take one type of spell, only put talent points in one type of spell, or both?

You put talent points into your talent trees - hit “N” to see them, or select from the menu at the bottom - and if you’re saying “I’m a shadow priest” that means that most OR all of your points are in the Shadow tree. You still get Holy-related and Discipline-related spells, just not some of the special ones you’d get out of those trees.

For instance, here’s the mostly-Shadow spec that I’m following for leveling from 70 to 80. I’m going to switch to this mostly-Holy spec at 80. Some of those talents are just little boosts to you, others are new spells just for that spec. For instance, in that Holy spec, Empowered Healing (4th row from the bottom) is just a boost to heals that every priest has. Circle of Healing (3rd row from the bottom) is a group heal that only Holy priests get.

Faldir’s Cove, that is. :smack:

Well, there were Eredar in the game first, and those are basically based off of the European idea of devils, which are more or less based on fauns/satyrs/horned god type beings, so yes.

Whee, Loremaster of Northrend. I guess that means I won the game. How long until they add the patch that lets you actually go kill Arthas?

In the meantime, I guess I’ll run Icecrown daily quests in my 30-45 minute play sessions and slooowly pick up those last 8 points of blacksmithing. (Stupid one-day cooldown on titansteel smelting!)

Probably quite a while; I believe Icecrown Citadel and Arthas are intended to be the “ultimate” raid in WotLK… you’ll need to have progressed through all the other raid content in WotLK, starting with Naxxramas. As of right now, Naxx is the only real raid dungeon in the game, with a couple Onyxia-style boss encounters (Obsidian Sanctum and Malygos). Ulduar is due out in the next major content patch (the first general WotLK patch having just gone live); there are whispers of another unannounced raid content patch after that, and then Icecrown Citadel as the last major content patch for WotLK (think Sunwell for BC). Given Blizzard’s general rate of progress, I’d say at least a year for Icecrown.

This raid content is something I don’t really understand (having only done a few 5-man dungeons myself). I assume this is considered the “end of the game” if you will, and only the very top-level players even attempt it (with fewer succeeding). Does anyone have any numbers on what percentage of WoW players ever completed the Sunwell raids during TBC? As a new WoW player with my main only up to 60 is there any chance of seeing any of this upcoming content? What kind of time investment are we talking about here? Do people even do the non-WotLK raids anymore?

Relatedly, you can get the Loremaster title without doing any raids at all, right?

Yes! The Loremaster title is my long term WoW goal. You merely need to complete a sufficient number of quests in each zone of Outland and Northrend, and the entire continents of Kalimdor and Eastern Kingdoms. No raids are necessary, but many dungeons are. I think all of these can be solo’d by a level 80, but I’m not certain.

This sounds good to me, as my play has been 80% solo and 20% small group. It’s good to know there is a long-term goal without having to commit to raiding, which seems like a daunting and time-consuming proposition (although maybe I’m wrong about that…).
