World of Warcraft questions

I just checked Allakhazam and the Amber Ledge area is basically aligned Kirin Tor, which makes it neutral as long as your Kirin Tor rep is neutral or over.

I just assume they don’t want people getting the map cleared out until they’ve already run around most places. They can’t make it TOO easy…

Okay, this isn’t the first time I’ve heard this term, so I’ll bite. What’s a “roflcopter”?

It’s basically a corruption of “ROFL” = rolling on the floor laughing. It is accompanied on some forums by an ASCII animated gif. I just like the term.

In game, my flying machine provides me with ROFLs since I use it to sky-gank over fel iron nodes.

Okay, here’s the kind of thing that drives me batshit insane. Here’s a screenshot of the map of Desolace:

Notice where my location pointer is (northwest corner near the coast). It shows I have a nice, wide-open space in which to go around the mountains there.

Here’s a screenshot of the actual view from that location and orientation:

An impassable vertical incline. I ran into this exact same crap in Ashenvale when trying to locate the Talondeep Path to get to Stonetalon Mountains — the map showed a big wide gap that didn’t actually exist. C’mon, if there are freakin’ mountains there, then show the freakin’ mountains on the freakin’ map! This kind of thing makes it incredibly difficult when trying to get to a specific location (in this case trying to get back to my damn corpse).

Also, once you get to the Ebon Blade camps (Zul’Drak is the earliest one I think) you get to ride on one of those skeletal griffin things from the Death Knight starting area.

ETA: Also, once you’ve saved up the money, a fast flier is totally worth it.

I don’t know what addon auto declines, but there’s a simple in-game mechanism to prevent multiple duel requests: simply don’t click yes or no. While the duel request dialog box is up, all duel requests are blocked. So you can’t be spammed. It’ll time out eventually, but the spammer will get tired of trying before then.

I usually just ignore the request, but if I’m feeling snarky, I’ll accept the duel and then just kneel. Let them beat on me and win. What do I care? Annoys them more than it inconveniences me.

Using the /ignore feature also will block duel requests from a specific player, if you get “lucky” with someone who won’t leave you alone. I usually used Pleonast’s method and just ignore the duel request - they would generally get the message and leave me alone after that.

I have both BugMeNot and AutoDecline installed.

I don’t remember if this has been asked, and I’m sorry but I’m not sifting through 1000 posts to find out.

Any Death Knight strategists out there? I’ve been speccing Blood to the bottom and started on Unholy. I LOVE that I’m able to hold out against relatively weak same-level elites without dying (mostly…) but I’m seeing some neat stuff in the Unholy tree. How does an Unholy spec (DPS) compare to a Blood spec (tanking) for leveling? I’d love a permanent ghoul and a gargoyle pet, but I’m not sure I want to give up my little pink wormies for them.

Edited: As I noted in the last page, I just dinged 70 last night and have started Northrend questing.

Currently, Unholy is pretty much the best spec out there, DPS-wise. They’re going to be buffing Frost and Blood to try to fix this, but Unholy is very viable as both a DPS and a tanking spec. Frost is a good tank spec as well. But basically any of the three are fine for DPS, and at least viable if not optimal for tanking.

Yeah, I’m replying to something I said. Deal…

I just wanted to note that, as someone said upthread, there are elites and then there are elites. I have no idea how they decide what level an elite should be…I’ve fought lvl 67 elites that have 25000 hp and lived. But there’s Durn the Hungerer (also nominally lvl 67) in Nagrand, who has 125000 hp! NOT soloable, even for a 70 DK, as I found out to my sorrow.

Well…it depends. I know that Durn is soloable by a well-geared (T6) level 70 Protection warrior, because I watched one (our former guildleader) do it. I would assume that a sufficiently well geared tank-specced DK could do it as well. It would be easy for a moderately geared 80 DK. But yes, Durn (and the Fel Reaver!) are still foes to be respected.

On the other hand, I fought a ?? elite in Silithus at level 65 solo and beat him without breaking a sweat. It’d be nice if there were some consistency in the elites.

If you have a quest calling for their destruction, the suggested number of players for the quest is an excellent hint at how tough an elite is. Durn’s quest suggests five players at the quest’s level (67). They aren’t kidding! You really do need five level-67 players to take him out.

My rule of thumb for group quests is you need to be as many levels over the quest as players needed. So Durn is probably soloable by most level 72 (=67+5) players. Adjust according to your class and spec.

Unholy is easier to level with than blood in my opinion. You lose a little self healing (you still have rune tap in most unholy dps builds) and gain a permanent pet, 15% run speed 20% mounted speed and vastly superior AOE. You gain a lot of time just because you move faster from place to place, especially once you get to storm peaks and icecrown where a flying mount is assumed.

However if soloing elites is your thing, you’ll want to grab tank gear and a tank spec. I managed to solo most of the 5 man quests in icecrown (I had to get help from a healer for the last part of battle at valhalas and the fate of bloodbane). Admittedly recent glyph changes have made this considerably harder (glyph of death strike nerf) but an average run of the mill elite isn’t anything problematic to a DK.

That last sentence is critical. I’ve always played squishies. My 75 frost mage has good survivability, but I still won’t intentionally take on a 75 elite with him. My 65 death knight has simultaneously taken on two elites his own level, and once killed an elite two levels over him. Even if my kiting is really good, I’m going to run out of mana and cooldowns before my mage could deal enough damage to pull that off.

Incidentally, speaking of elites, I just visited with Alexstrasza on top of Wyrmrest temple. She has 14 million hit points. I calculated that if I could attack her with zero delay between casts, every single spell critted, I never ran out of mana, and she never hit back, I could kill her in a bit over four hours.

Is it just me or are death knights just overpowered? I have been ganked by them often enough, but there is almost nothing I can do to win against them. Maybe I just suck, I can deal with that.

So I started a DK myself last night. At no time during the initial quests in Havenshire or whatever it is called did I feel challenged. Nothing was a viable threat. I can only imagine that higher than lvl 55 DKs are real 500 lbs gorillas. It really wasn’t any fun to play a DK, but maybe I just need to play him more. Still it seems like they’re built for raiding and ganking to me.

Patch/maintenance day, folks! Don’t expect to play before mid-afternoon.

Death Knights may or may not be overpowered in general, but they’re definitely overpowered compared to a typical mainly-solo character at the high 50s through mid 60s, because they start with much better gear than your average solo-plus-a-few-instances character will have before level 65-70.

I’ve been enjoying playing my DK in battlegrounds as I skill up my enchanting and mining, since a 58 DK is the closest thing to a twink I’m likely ever to have.
