World of Warcraft questions

Hey

Any quests for a LVL 14 human warrior, which DOESN’T involve getting eaten up and spewed out by some cocka-mamie “GUIDE”?

Jesus! Y’all COULDA warned me, you know???

Thanks

Q

Warned who for the what now? I haven’t understood a word of your last two posts now. What happened that’s got you so upset?

  1. I made a toon to help show Quasimodem where the gnolls were, and he thanked me. We had lots of fun, but died a lot.
  2. It sounds like maybe he read a guide (or QuestHelper), and taking its advice didn’t work out well. Either that, or I’m the guide he got killed with, multiple times. Which is true.

I can’t speak for Quasi, but I’m pretty sure the fun outweighed the dying part when we went looking for gnolls.

Quasimodem, Westfall is a bit on the tough side. I think you’d have better luck doing the Kharanos quests until you get to a higher level.

Ummm. Yeah. Thanks for the help, wonderlust. Sorry for any misunderstandings and I will leave YOU to explain that, since I am the innocent party who go “chewed up and spit out”.

In the future, might I suggest we choose open disclosure as far as the sex of toons (and any help offered) are concerned???

Godammit?

THANKS

Q

What is that bar at the top of your UI?

Some Pally advice please - I am using a two handed mace (Verigan’s Fist) and have been since I started, what is the advantage (if any) of training to use other weapons? I switched to my one handed mace and shield combo for a while last night but I hardly hit anything, I think my weapon skill is too low.

Did anyone else use Verigan’s fist? If so at what sort of level did you upgrade? I am level 30 at the moment and it seems to still be OK, just moved into STV and I am able to hunt the tigers and panthers in the north without too much difficulty.

Well, for leveling/retribution paladins I think it’s probably best to stick with a two-handed sword or mace. This is 'cause you’re more than tanky enough to live without a shield in the meantime, and you don’t want to sacrifice the damage that having a two-handed mace provides you.

You would want to use a shield if you became a tanking/protection paladin, more likely than not, because it gives you the chance to block and mitigates more of that damage, making life easier for the healers.

Generally, I’ve never trained other weapons for my paladin apart from the axe, maces and swords. They’re a little weird. You can wield a sword as a mage if you really want, but I sure as heck never do.

EDIT: Oh, right, hello SDMB!

Hello welcome to SDMB.

What level were you when you trained in other weapons? How did you go about it, smash low level mobs or something? I can’t hit anything in STV unless I use my two-hander!

It varied. I came across a nice two-handed axe as a quest reward, at one point - one with much better stats than what I was wielding - so I went ahead, got the axe and got the training for it.

As to leveling the skill up, I simply wield the weapon and go attack a mob of my level. You should find that the skill goes up very rapidly, even if all you do is miss for a long time and the mob takes a very long time to die. Being as you’re a paladin, as well, you can take a good mashing for ages until you’re anywhere close to dead.

Assuming you’re high enough level (STV must put you close), I guess you could stick on Seal of Light and spam Judgement of Light. That would allow you to use mobs as punching bags for skill even more, since you’ll keep getting heals. You should find it pretty easy to skill up a new weapon.

When I get new weapon that I need to train up, I just run though a low level dungeon, …Stockade is my favourite one for that…you even get some nice actionable BoE

It looks like TitanBar.

Thank you.

And thank you all for the weapon advice, next time I am on I will visit the weapon trainer in sw and get 2H swords.

Suggestion: Pick up Polearms too while you’re getting 2H Swords. I’ve found good Polearms to be a lot more easily obtainable than good 2H Swords, and they’re very good for a Retribution Paladin. I used Verigan’s Fist from the mid-20s to level 43, picked up Bonechewer for cheap, then got Ice Barbed Spear at 51.

I did have the advantage of having a partner to play with plus triple XP from Recruit-A-Friend, so good gear wasn’t as big an issue; we just leveled too fast. You might wind up replacing Verigan’s Fist well before your 40s, although it’s a good enough weapon that it’ll be tough to.

Thanks good tip I will do that, not sure I like the idea of polearms but then if the buffs are good who cares?

I am also playing this char with someone else, a prot pally using a shield, so it is working out well for weapon drops. Armour on the other hand is a pain, I am sure he has loaded greed rolls…

Swords and maces always appealed to me too, but I fell in love with polearms as soon as I started using one. The attack animations are IMO the coolest.

I think that’s the rub, as a Pally you watch those animations an awful lot so it has to be pleasant to watch. I am now intrigued about Polearms.

The TitanPanel addon. It’s handy!

When I was a lower-level pally, I found that big two-handed weapons were best against big, slow enemies, while a 1-hander + shield were better when fighting quick enemies that hit often. Now that I’m higher-level, not so much difference, and I use 2-hand weapons most of the time. But my current 1-hand sword happens to be the first (and only) purple-text item I’ve found, so I’m sort of keeping it around for sentimental reasons. I don’t think it’s going to be useful for much longer, though.

I just kept it until I found something better. Don’t recall what level that was.

My human pally is trained in 1- & 2-handed maces, 1- & 2-handed swords, and polearms. I’ve kept my skill levels up in all of them except 1-handed maces. Granted, I have an endgame goal of earning the Weaponmaster (I think it’s called) achievement, which requires leveling 4 different weapon skills to 450. One definite advantage to keeping your skills up in several different weapons is that it opens up a lot of options. A lot of the time you’re offered a choice of a few different weapons as a quest reward, so if you already know how to use all or most of them, you can choose the best one available, not just the one you know how to use. Also, when you search for new weapons at the AH, say, when you’ve leveled up and want to find a bigger weapon that matches your new level, it’s nice to be able to look at different weapon types. For example, when I hit a new level I might go to the AH and look for swords that require my new level to use, but there aren’t any. So I can go look at polearms and 2-hand maces as well. Odds are good that I’ll find a nice upgrade available in at least one of my trained weapon types. Of course, a lot of the time I’ll spot a weapon I really like that’s a few levels too high for me, and if I can afford it I’ll go ahead and buy it and stick it in the bank to wait for me.

I started out knowing both maces, of course, and as soon as I could I got sword training just because I personally like swords better than maces. In my 20s I found a blue polearm in the Wetlands, so I got trained to use that. I’ve chosen to skip axes, which hasn’t been a problem since human questgivers don’t often hand out axes for rewards. If I make a dwarf pally in the future, I’ll probably give axes more of a look.

Speaking of leveling up new weapon skills — the other day I spotted a lvl 77 night elf druid in Tanaris, fighting a lvl 40-something mob hand-to-hand. I was puzzled because he was taking way too long to kill the mob, and his hitpoints were down to about half. I was thinking, “He should be killing that mob with one hit!” But then I noticed he was using a very fancy-looking polearm, and I came to the conclusion that he had just obtained the weapon, it was a brand new weapon type for him, and he was working on leveling his skill with it. So the reason he was taking so long to kill the mob is that he was missing a whole lot.

My pally is almost to lvl 54, and has saved up more than 700 gold. A few days ago I was talking to a kid at work who’s been playing WoW for a few years, and when I mentioned that my pally had (at that time) saved up 500+ gold, he seemed very surprised and said, “Before level 60?” I pointed out that I was helped by the fact that I obtained a second White Kitten pet which I was able to sell at the AH for 100g. But it’s also worth noting that my pally didn’t take a gathering profession until lvl 50, and really didn’t even start using the AH until she was in her 20s. (Since then, I guess I’ve made really good use of the AH. I’ve made another 200g in just a few days.) So, is it actually unusual to save up so much gold before lvl 60?

Re: Level 60 — I can’t wait to get there because my female human pally is going to be “teh sexy” in her new armor. I’ve been buying pieces of armor with the “Bloodscale” designation, and so far have the chest, legs, and belt, all of which require lvl 60. Not a “set”, per se, but the items are clearly designed to look good together. And these particular items are quite revealing on a female toon  (Why yes, my sex life is nonexistent. Why do you ask?)

Chimtahna, my tauren hunter. Sigh. You Burning Dog Legion members may have noticed I haven’t been on with Chim much lately. I’m just not sure what to do with him. I’ve already mentioned my frustration with the way his size makes navigating tight quarters a royal pain in the ass. (Let me tell you how many times he’s landed in the water in Booty Bay simply because I can’t see where he’s going …) He’s constantly getting hung up in doorways in any place that isn’t tauren-built. But also … I think I’m just bored with the “ranged attack” thing. I just prefer melee classes, and hybrid melee classes at that. So I’ve ended up playing my human paladin a whole bunch lately.

I have two other toons in Burning Dog Legion, an orc warrior and a troll priest, which I should probably give more attention. But as I’ve mentioned before, I’ve been frustrated with my apparent inability to comprehend the warrior “rage” system — as with the rogue’s “energy” system, I’m just having trouble with the idea that I can’t actually use my special abilities most of the time. I don’t have any trouble with mana-using classes; with those it’s just blast/hammer away until I run out of mana, then withdraw to drink and refill, then jump back in again. With mana-users, I have all of my abilities available at all times (taking cooldowns into consideration, of course). With a warrior it feels like I’m not dishing out the damage I should until the very end of combat when I’ve finally built up enough rage to unleash a special attack. With rogues I get in one or two big-ish hits and then get the crap kicked out of me while I wait for for the energy to replenish enough to use a finishing move. In both cases, adds in the middle of a fight are killers. With my rogue, I’ve been trying to master “Backstab”, but that’s been difficult due to a “special ability” that mobs have: when they’re walking their little routes, they can do an instant 180° flip (whereas a player character has to actually rotate all the way around to face the opposite direction, NPCs just walk one direction and then blink, they’re walking the other direction). So half the time I stealth and start sneaking up behind a mob, and just as I’m ready to Backstab it instantly flips around so I’m no longer behind it. Arg!

And priests … I’ve tried them a few times, and quickly get tired of dying all the time because they’re so fragile, at least at low levels. What good is a ranged spell attack if you’ve only got time to hit the mob with two Smites before it closes to melee? And if it brings a friend or two, it’s instant death. Same basic problem with mages, though they do a bit more damage with their spells so the mobs don’t have quite so many HPs left when they close to melee. I’ve had a bit better luck with my warlock, and my shaman is doing all right, but like paladins they’re hybrid classes, which I seem to do better with. Though my druid (another hybrid class) has kind of stalled in her mid-20s, as she’s reached a point where her spells have become expensive enough to drain her mana quickly, but she’s still kind of fragile and doesn’t do well in melee.

Damn, I do go on and on, don’t I? :stuck_out_tongue:

700g is pretty damn good before 60. I had just barely enough to by the fast riding skill (which is what, 580 or so total?). Most of that came from a purple world drop that sold for about 350g. But then again I spent a lot of money on AH armor, weapons, and glyphs while I was hanging out at 49 doing PVP (good times… best bracket so far for PVP in my opinion - mounts but no DKs!). I also levelled LW for awhile (which wasted my skinning mats). And of course as a hunter I had the ammo cost. All-in-all I’d say you’re a definitely ahead of the curve on money, but perhaps not epically so.

Yeah, noticed that Chim wasn’t on much anymore. As a fellow Tauren hunter I can totally relate on the size issue - you do get used to using the camera controls over time but it’s always a pain. As far as ranged vs. melee that’s obviously a personal preference issue - I enjoy the pew-pew-pew with pet tanking more than having to run up to everything myself. The only thing I dislike about the hunter is the lack of a good AOE tool (although if my turtle gets Thunderstomp in the 3.1 patch that will help).

If you’ve got enough to buy the epic mount, you’re doing well. Of course, Pallys luck out and don’t have to spend all that cash on the mount, so we’re spoiled.

Given that you haven’t been doing the Mining thing for very long, it’s actually pretty impressive. Although, if you’re selling off everything you’re mining, just getting from 1 to 200 will net you a buttload of cash. Right now I’m level 57 and I’ve got about 300-350 gold with 100 in ore waiting to be sold, but I’ve been the primary income earner for me and my partner. I’m pretty sure I’ve given her somewhere between 400-500 gold, and I know I’ve spent a fair bit on decent equipment for myself.

Edit: I love the Hunter, myself. I absolutely love the guns in the game, and I took Engineering on my Hunter just to make sure he’s always got the best gun. (Of course, being the stat whore I am, he’s using a crossbow now because he got a very nice blue world drop.) Hell, even my Night Elf Rogue had a gun for a while to pull with.
